Kill Command (2016)

Think "Predator/Aliens", but sponsored by Boston Dynamics

Warning: Spoilers
I really like this film as it is extremely well done. The VFX will stand up against any similar sci-fi movie. The film did not waste any time getting to the plot, so nor shall I. Some time in the not too distant future, the proverbial Evil Corp has sensed something is amiss and has sent it's mysterious, digitally augmented female scientist and a few marines to a training island to see what's happening.

After a few minutes in the forest, we sense that the augmented scientist knows more then she is letting on. At this point if you call yourself a sci-fi fan, you will already suspect what is going to happen upon entering the dense forest. Like my girlfriend & I, you will probably start laying on bets regarding who will survive. However this predicable feeling does not detract you from watching the film. The characters are likable, after a ten minutes or so on the island, you start to feel for the actors as they begin to open up to the camera. There is the usual bunch: the mean guy, the nice guy, the cold robot like girl, the cowardly guy, the big muscle guy who says five words and there are the cannon fodder guys (all the best sci-fi movies rely this team format).

The script is no Oscar winner, but imagine if they only had a million dollars to make Predator and there was no Arnold Schwarzenegger. Now imagine the same for Aliens, add a few really talented VFX guys, some really great concept art people, a half decent script and this is probably the movie you would have got.

Yes! You know the story, you have seen the character archetypes before and you think you know how it will end. However you can always tell a well done film because you know all this and you are still want to watch until the very last scene. This is how I felt, so I gave it a 8/10.

7.4/10 would probably be more accurate, however I think they deserved the rounded up score, rather then the round down.

PS: The person who I was certain would live, ended up dying. So I guess I can still be surprised every now and then. Enjoy

Proxy (I) (2013)

Solid acting, good performances, added to my weird list.

If you're looking for a movie that gives you that feeling like you're not sure what you have been apart of, then take a moment to view here. As you sit alone in the dark talking aloud to the TV, you'll be asking yourself questions like: It's a horror? Oh, is it mystery? Maybe it's a psycho killer type thing? Or is it just weird? The ending, It couldn't of ended any other way! I liked it.

The main character really pulled me into the story. She is alone and pregnant, we don't know why. An introvert loner who's sadness seems obvious for all to see. When the first shocking seen hits you, it hits you twice as hard as you know this will send her down some weird pit of crazy despair that only someone on the edge can feel.

Then as the next few scenes of the movie unfold, you can sense that something else is happening and That's when I sat up as I wasn't sure what is happening or what will happen next. As you know, there are way too many movies where you know what happens next!

You have to like unconventional movies or you won't enjoy this strange little trip into weirdness.

Moebius (2013)
7/10
If you like Jennifer Aniston movies. Turn back to the multiplex now, this is not the path for you.
30 September 2013
I wanted to write a review so as to somehow share what I just have seen with someone (anyone). Even if it's just my text being passed on to you the apprehensive reader.

As what happens in Moebius, stays in Moebius & I wont be able to share this over the coffee machine at work tomorrow.

I've see some weird movies (swedish, french, Japanese, south American etc etc...). I didn't think I could be made to turn from the screen & put my hands over my eyes anymore. However "Ki-duk Kim" writer/director reached deep into that dark space within his twisted soul and pulled this bad boy up for all to ponder.

So lets get serious! It's not the rape, violence & dark nature of this movie that you haven't seen before. It's the haunting way all it's been put together. The reason why you'll keep watching is as far as art concerned, the director & the actors do a wonderful performance in portraying this darker than twisted narrative. In fact if they didn't perform it so well, you wouldn't be able to watch.

Minus a musical score or any verbal communication, every sound you hear, affects the hairs on the back of your neck. It's not a horror, however you get that cold feeling as your eyes take in it all in.

The movie isn't all gore and shock throughout. There are genuine moments of tenderness when father and son come together, bonding due to the tragedy of it all. Guilt and forgiveness are exchanged within a moments glance and you feel warm as you predict the Hollywood style happy ending. Boy meets girl and again the eyes exchange their words.

I'd like to tell you more, however I struggle to describe the journey ahead without giving it all away.

You'll be adding this to your list. A well told and chair pinning watch. However I won't be watching it again anytime soon. 6.8/10

A Sci-Fi story, not a Sci-Fi epic.
7 September 2012
I really enjoyed this film. OK the production was a little low budget and the supporting cast could have been a little more polished, however the main stars more than made up for this with solid performances. When I say this is "A Sci-Fi story, not a Sci-Fi epic", I mean that this movie doesn't have or need a million dollar effects budget as this is a simple story about our planet, hope and better tomorrows. The effects were well done, and did not distract me from the main narrative as badly done effects can do. The movie is for those whom don't mind their Sci-Fi with a little subtle "X-Files" orientation for sure. In the beginning our hero is the non believer digging around in search of his missing child. Then as strange things ensue as he reaches what he sees as the unbelievable, undeniable truth (the truth is out there). The mystery unfolds and this happy tale develops into the ending you hoped for.

This is a Saturday afternoon TV Sci-Fi movie for everyone, whether you be hardened, old skool, Sci-Fi lover or you're just the girlfriend/boyfriend, watching along for the ride as there is nothing else on. I enjoyed the 90 mins and so did my girlfriend.

5.6/10 from me
