Open Grave (2013)
Not at all what I expected, but a superbly well-made film
I went into this movie mostly blind, having only read a short summary 30 minutes before seeing it. The summary does not do this film any justice. I expected a quick horror slasher, that I could enjoy for 90 minutes and immediately forget about. What I got was a brilliantly shot, beautifully scored, and engrossing mystery/horror thriller that I will never forget. It relieves me to know that there is still some creativity and originality in horror movies, especially in this day and age. While the ideas and concepts in Open Grave have been done to death, it brings new light to a certain horror genre we are all probably getting sick of and uses them perfectly. A few horror clichés are still there that I am frankly growing tired of, but not enough that it hurts the film.
The cinematography was top notch for a horror film. The casting was also well done. Sharlto Copley does a fantastic job as the lead, even with his real South African accent trying ever so hard to bleed through his fake American one. Also anything with Thomas Kretschmann in it is always worth a watch. In conclusion, if you are at all a horror fan like me, you must give this film a go. I think you will enjoy it.
Avatar (2009)
Just pretty eye candy made sour by Sam Worthington's horrible acting and not so subtle environmental propaganda
Let me preface this brief review by saying that my IMAX viewing of this was hindered by the fact that the 3D was broken and I got to see it in glorious IMAX 2D. I went into this knowing how horrible the story was going to be and I just wanted to see what it was like in 3D since everybody wouldn't shut up about it. So I go in and I see 30 seconds of trees in 3D and it goes dark and the manager says the 3D is broken, but my stub will work as a free pass the next time I go to that theater. Only problem was that I was on vacation at the time and so I just wasted almost 20 bucks on a 2D movie.
So anyway onto the review. Sam Worthington, God bless him, is one of the worst actors I have ever seen. I wouldn't have minded so much if his bloody Aussie accent hadn't been bleeding through his horrible attempt at an American accent. Just be an Aussie for crying out loud.
Now I will say that the visuals were, for the most part, very beautiful to look at, even without the 3D effect the Na'vi appeared to be incredibly life-like and not CG. However, everything else was pure obvious CG dribble, but pretty CG dribble at least.
The not-so-subtle environmental message literally made me feel like I was watching Ferngully again, with Pocahontas and Dances with Wolves's story mixed in. Now I'm all for saving the planet, but seriously, watching this makes me want to chop down every tree I see.
Lastly just some nitpicks I have. The name of the planet/moon/world Pandora is probably the most unoriginal name for anything I can think of. Also, unobtainium or whatever is also very stupid and unoriginal, see The Core to see what that movie stole that elemental title from.
James Cameron, PLEASE, just make another terminator or aliens movie and leave this film to the rest of the hippies in Hollywood
