My Name Is Earl (2005)
Not perfect, but still funny and slightly original
After a series of unfortunate events, Earl Hickey figures his bad luck is related to the bad things he has done over the years -- and he has done a lot of bad things. So Earl makes a list of every horrible thing he can remember doing and tries to correct his terrible deeds, with hilarious results. As he tries to cross bad deeds off his list, he occasionally comes off as the same jerk he used to be on purpose. Along with his insanely stupid brother Randy, the hotel maid Catalina, and occasionally his ex-wife Joy and her husband Darnell Turner.
I don't know how original the show is. There may have been another comedy involving a list of bad deeds, but this is the only one I know of.
Because Earl keeps remembering and adding to his list, the number of episodes isn't restricted to what's on the list itself. Hopefully it won't.
Winx Club (2004)
Possible Sailor Moon rip-off, but a good one.
Anyone who hasn't seen the show, please skim to the third paragraph.
If you've seen the show, you wouldn't be blamed for thinking it's a deliberate rip-off of Sailor Moon and other such similar series. I myself have criticized such supposed rip-offs, but what have I accomplished? Nothing. This series may not be original, but it can be extremely entertaining if you look past its faults.
In the magical kingdom of... well, I call it Althea, there are three different schools. There is the Alfea school for young girls who want to be trained as fairies, the Red Fountain for boys training to be magical knights, and Cloud Tower for young women who want to learn the darker (but not necessarily evil) arts of magic. The main characters are Bloom (power of Dragon Fire), Stella (The Sun and the Moon), Musa (Rhythms & Tunes), Flora (Botany), and Techna (Digital Powers). My main problem with this cartoon series isn't that it's overly girlie - I can take a lot of pink, believe me. What bothers me is that none of the schools are co-ed unless you count the pets/familiars/non-human-animals. Suppose a boy wanted to be a fairy or a girl wanted to be a knight. That's a problem that may or may not be remedied later on in the series (post Saturday, October 23, 2004).
Those Who Walk in Darkness (2003)
A little rough around the edges
Have you ever seen a Flash or Shockwave movie? This is pretty much how the film plays out. The animation is really weird: the characters move around across the screen like paper dolls and certain sequences like flames contain too few frames of animation. This really bothers me. The main hero (played by Li'l Kim) is a bigot against these supernatural beings, which makes her out to be more of a villain than a hero. I'm not trying to dog FLASH movies (or even insult canines), but this is ridiculous. The lack of frames is unbearable and ruins what could have been at least a decent film. I hope Li'l Kim takes a better look at her next movie script . . . unless she's really only in it for the money.
