Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)
An animation masterpiece
OK, this is not so original to say that this animation flick is a masterpiece. There must be several other users that say the same thing as I am saying.
But the reason is simple: it's because it truly is!
This movie left me overexcited for the last one of the trilogy. I felt like a little boy that had the best chocolate on the planet and was told that there will be more of it if I can wait until the next batch is ready. The animation is tip-top, the characters are deep and likeable, the story is fresh (relatively to the multi-verse mania that has been running the theaters lately), the action scenes are over the top and easy to follow, the epicness of the situation is increasing as the movie goes and many jokes are really funny (sometimes simple but they work in their simplicity because you let yourself go with the general mood of the film).
Spiderman fans will have what they are looking for and newcomers will just have an insane experience of colors, beauty, action and emotions that very few movies are able to give, with a real message and deep thoughts about the multi-verse, destiny/determinism, family and responsibilities.
So, dare I say it: this is the best movie of 2023 so far, the best animation movie of all time and one of the best films of all time, period. Just go watch it!
The Ritual (2017)
Really good horror
I must say that I had been hooked by the horrific ambiance of the movie. The story holds itself pretty well and the horror is frightening, unlike many recent horror movies that mainly rely solely on jump scares and computer generated imagery (CGI). This one here, whilst having one or two quick jump scares and CGI, makes the menace come from the unseen and the hints of horrifying creatures observing from a distance. A truly scary motion picture. I was shivering at some points, fearing for the protagonists of the story.
I did read many disappointed comments about the ending. While I have to admit that the ending is not as terrifying as the first 2 thirds of the movie, it does keep a lot of tension and some good moments. The story even holds quite a satisfying cohesion with the events of the beginning. I thought it was a pretty clever finale even though the very end seemed quite "Deus Ex Machina-ish".
Definitely a good movie to watch for some real thrills!
Jupiter Ascending (2015)
A modern Fifth Element
This movie is very much like the Fifth Element: kitsch and cliché. Not good, not bad either, it's just made for those who like the genre and are not afraid of clichés like good guys looking good, bad guys looking ugly and talking dirty and predictable betrayals.
The action scenes are pretty good though, and well paced. Some script ideas were good, but the really poor plot didn't help.
I would really like to stop a moment on the kitsch idea: the monsters/aliens in this movie have such poorly designed skins that they look like they were conceived by a 6-year-old: "They should have a big head and wings and big ears and wear latex clothes of flashy colors and..." I thought that the creators of the super cult movie Matrix would do much better and less cliché.
Conclusion: boring and cliché but entertaining at some points.
Under the Skin (2013)
Both good and bad
Too bad this movie didn't get me. Because there was some stuff that I really liked, like the imagery and the creepiness, and there was some other stuff that got me bored, like everything else (long pauses with nothing happening, dark moments when you can barely see 3 clear pixels and NOT A DAMN EXPLANATION ABOUT ANTYHING - even though that's a ballsy choice which can be enjoyed by making your own movie out of the imagery).
I haven't read the novel so I can't make any link with it, but it leaves me with the strange feeling that the movie had something good but was bad in some ways that prevented me from enjoying it totally. I was bored, really bored at some points. And every once in a while, there's a good scene that takes me back in for a few minutes.
In conclusion, there are a few good things you can enjoy (like Scarlett Johansson fully naked, there, I said it! - but more seriously, some really scary and creepy moments and also beautiful shots) but, most of the time, it is boring because you don't know what's happening and what's with the really really long pauses. So this movie should be seen because there are really likable things that shouldn't be missed, but is a failure in the rest.
Piranha 3DD (2012)
The worst movie I've ever seen
My reaction during most of the movie was: " Are you f***ing kidding me?"
This movie doesn't make sense from the beginning to the end, and everything (I mean EVERYTHING) is there to let you think no one in the crew ever read the script and said "Hey, this script is awful and there's so much sexual content, why not just make a porn movie? We don't need a piranha pretext to place boobs and horny teenagers before the camera..."
If you wanna see boobs, you won't be disappointed. But if you actually want to see a MOVIE, just go ahead and watch something else.
