Will Trent: Me Llamo Will Trent (2024)
Great season opener
I love the show. It's different, it's got unique characters, and it keeps a great pace. Season two episode one is a great way to open a season. My only disappointment was with the death of Cricket. I know why they did it, I just think that they could have let her survive and still set up the tension in Will for the next several episodes. I REALLY liked her character and thought they had great chemistry. I would have loved to see that relationship develop a little before they killed her off. I like where they picked up with the rest of the cast and I enjoyed the addition of Franklin. I hope that they keep building this ensemble out a little, it's a great cast and I think that it all works better when they focus is spread out a little on the different members of the team. I only subtracted 2 points because the bomb squad death was so foreseeable.
The Madame Blanc Mysteries: Episode #2.4 (2023)
Not one of the better episodes
I generally like this series but this episode was a bit disappointing. First, Caron has gone to lengths to tell Jean that she is just a consultant and now suddenly he is asking her to join him in a stakeout and allowing Dom to just hang out with them. Also, the "I know this key has something to do with the answer" gets old after awhile. Plus this weird flirty thing with Gloria felt stilted. Finally, I just don't believe that Dom wouldn't tell Jean about helping the Lloyds. Also, still not sure why this was such a big deal, she has in the past taken "unauthorized" photos so now why suddenly this character is acting like what he did was potentially containing evidence, seems very disingenuous... like they just needed a reason to cause a rift between the two of them.
Making It Home with Kortney & Kenny (2020)
Another generic home reno with regurgitated design
I was a little impressed when it seemed like Courtney was really listening to what the home owners wanted but two things turned me off. First, the episode where the home owners CLEARLY didn't want a fireplace and she kept pushing until they agreed to a "100% safe" all electric fireplace DESPITE knowing that there was childhood trauma for the father from a house fire. Second, on more than one occasion they have had to "go over budget" and asked for more money rather than trying to find other high end design elements that they could pulled back on and stay in budget. Just seems like it's more about what she wants than what the clients want. After three episodes, I would never trust them to do my home.
Star Trek: The Next Generation: Angel One (1988)
Oh the irony
I really love how they come into contact with this "Amazonian" type matriarchy and then proceed to have Riker continue to lead the conversation. This really should have been a Troi episode; she didn't even get chided for letting her man talk out of turn. And then the Lead female of this group still seems to care what Riker thinks about her and whether she is attractive. They get to the conflict of the episode only to have Riker "mansplain" how they are facing an evolution of the sexes on their planet. So now suddenly they have all this respect for the brilliance that is a white guy. Really one of the worst episodes.
The Lost Kitchen (2021)
Only a few episodes and you get the gist
I can't watch more than 1 episode a week on this. It gets a little over the top real fast. I like seeing the flavors she puts together and also the local farmers, ranchers, and local artisans that she deals with. It's also interest to hear her ideas on how the menu develops. However, it is interspersed with so much angsty or self congratulatory saccharine dialog I find myself rolling my eyes. And it's clear that they are living a privileged life, which is very good for them but is very tone deaf when you think about the real suffering of people who worked in the restaurant biz during the pandemic. Everything is either "absolutely perfect" or "a complete disaster" that she can't deal with which, of course, she pulls out to make absolutely perfect by service time. It's Martha Stewart meets Joanna Gaines with a bi-polar angle.
It's worth a watch, just don't try to binge it.
The Orville: A Tale of Two Topas (2022)
Well written drama but I miss the Orville
The writing was decent if not predictable. Peter Macon gave a great performance, as did the actor who played Topa. But all the things that I loved about the Orville have been missing this season. With one episode exception, it all drags me down. It's all pseudo political drama, no exploration/ new ideas and very little humor. I don't mind a show making statements or showing different view points but this all feels very contrived. Even the whole Dr & Issac thing is getting old. They need to quit driving so much of that into every storyline. I still watch but I am not on my seat to watch it every week anymore and likely will just stop if something more interesting comes along. I hope Seth gets his show back.
The Orville: Shadow Realms (2022)
Tired of shows about the Doctor
I won't enumerate all of the holes and cliches in this episode. And don't get me wrong, I like the Doctor but there are other characters we haven't gotten to see much about. We haven't seem really anything about LaMarr or Malloy, two characters I think we could find infinitely more interesting.
Doctor Who: Flux: Chapter One - The Halloween Apocalypse (2021)
Very disorganized and disorienting
I love Dr Who and am generally OK with a little bit of scatterbrained connections I this show but this was a bit too much for me. I thought that this was an extended version, I was expecting a double feature. In any case, there was too much jumping about and didn't really make any sense though I am sure why the end of the 6 show (?) arc it will all come together. For that reason, I will likely not watch this until I can binge the whole season.
I like Whitaker but I feel like the shows direction and story have been lacking the last season around and this does not make me feel very excited for the rest of the season. I hope her leaving was her choice and not because TPB think that she is the reason the ratings are dropping.
Invasion (2021)
I don't get it
I really wanted to like this. I watched the first two episodes and all it seems to be about is deep pain, sadness, and death...maybe caused by an alien? Well, the death is caused by an alien... the rest is just life, loss, betrayals etc. I'm going to give it one more chance tomorrow and watch the third episode but they are really stretching with this one.
MacGyver (2016)
Sub-par even without the comparison to the original
I barely remember original McGuyver but most of these shows from the 70s and 80s were a little cheesy. I just watched the pilot episode of this new MacGuyver. Forget about how it compares; it is still lacking. I can't believe this show has continued for 5 seasons.
The main character is so full of himself it borders on annoying. The main character's monologues are pathetically cliche, the stunt work completely predictable, and the science only believable on the most basic level (putting together a couple of chemicals to make things smoke though why you would have pool chlorine, Amonia, and tin foil in the same kitchen cupboard is a bit odd.). Though most of the "techie" stuff is not. In the age of Google you can't just half a** the computer science like your did 40 years ago. It actually reminds me of a poor spin off on Burn Notice though the chapters there are much more likeable.
I am going to watch a few more episodes. It's possible it will get better but I'm not holding my breath.
Star Trek: Discovery: Through the Valley of Shadows (2019)
Tired of weepy melancholic monologues
I like this show but it suffered from too many mushy angsty speeches. I like Pike, Saru, Tilly, Paul, Phillipa and evening the new engineer Tig. The actor pulls off Spock admirably for the writing he has been provided with but he isn't completely convincing. I am tired of the whole Ash/Michael on/off again teenager type crush. I am VERY tired of the MB character constantly countermanding Pike and then following it up with this impassioned illogical plea that makes everyone stand around in awe as if they had never seen or knew someone as great as her. They need to grow her character and stop making her so one dimensional and predictable.
I like this show. But they have maybe one more season to get some better writing and character development for the central characters and start treating like a real ensemble cast, back off of the Michael Burnham story line and build some better arcs around the other characters. Otherwise, I can't see them getting a season 4.
