Here's a movie that is as good as the book.
21 January 2022
I went to end not knowing how the movie would compare to the amazing book. But I was astounded by how well this movie was done. All the characters were perfect, the scenery was amazing and the message of love, forgiveness, faith, and more forgiveness came through. This is a true love story of love stories. Not too often do you get the audience in the theater to clap and to yell out on certain scenes, but in this one they did. I would say this movie is almost perfect.

Airport 14 The Rapture
3 October 2014
After watching this 15 million dollar budget flick, I kind of wonder where all the money went. It sure didn't go into the production and special effects, probably Nicolas Cage's salary. As a Christian, the purpose of a faith based film is to win converts not turn them away. Why is it most every movie involving Christians always makes them out to be crazy lunatics? Is this what movie watchers want to see? If you want to show a flick about "The Rapture" and make it out to be a disaster flick, then it wouldn't hurt to give a little bit of a history lesson to help explain what the heck is going on. Back it up with Bible scriptures not just scenes of planes and cars crashing, people running everywhere and pure chaos. Small roles from Lea Thompson (from the 80's Back to the Future and All The Right Moves) and singer Jordin Sparks (American Idol) are recognizable but nothing to write a review about. What I liked best about watching this movies was the reactions from the people sitting in the theater. From screams at suspenseful scenes, talking out loud trying to explain parts of the movie and those who don't get out much behaving like their at home sitting in the living room watching TV.

Depressing, Hopelessness and Disappointing.
6 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I truly do enjoy a good tearjerker as long there is a meaningful realistic story to back it up. Now watching people who are dying of all sorts of Cancer is a very real and emotional, especially if its based on a true story. This flick doesn't seem real at any point and the teen humor that fills in during the hopelessness is just silly. Like allot of death themed flicks, it spends sometime bashing God, Jesus and Christianity but portrays the afterlife as some far out imagination wish. I love flicks that show reality, passion, human suffering in a real life setting but this flick somehow drops the ball. Its a notch above average do to the theme but I would say its Shailene Woodley's least impressive.

A woman luring men into a black hell, So what else is new?
21 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I guess I'm the dividing line of those who think this is a masterpiece, I see it as a waste of time. I know I'm not the only one, numerous people were walking out of the theater laughing or disappointed with this flick. For those who look deeply into the hidden meaning or symbolism of the aliens, a lost society out of touch with humanity,I don't need this movie to tell me that. Without the beautiful Scarlett Johansson as the luring alien, this would be a B movie at most. Sure, college English literature or Cinema class students can discuss the deeper meanings, that's great, but I could explain it in one sentence, Men are lured by women everyday in our society like lemmings going over a cliff. But we make a movie about it and suddenly we create a great masterpiece in the cinema world.

Life in a small town in Nebraska is for real and so is Heaven.
16 April 2014
I gave this movie an extra star for being based on a true story but I actually expected better. Heaven Is For Real is more about the life of a struggling Pastor/Firefighter/Contractor trying to make ends meet in small town in Nebraska. I wanted to know how Heaven is real and some of the proof explained in the book. Sure, the movie trailer pretty much gives away the only few scenes from the movie, but honestly I didn't go to see a flick about life in Imperial, Nebraska. Don't get me wrong, the few scenes are deeply emotional and will break a tear, also a little bit of humor is thrown into the mix. But if you walk away and your faith in God has increased and belief in Heaven is stronger, then the movie did its job.

Powerful and emotional journey of faith and hope.
1 February 2014
Not very often does a movie come out that is as powerful and emotional as this one. This movie reveals the pain, confusion, hopelessness and true brute reality many teens and young women live out today. But also there are organizations with the compassion from the victims to help each other survive the ordeal. The movie reveals that showing the mother a photo of the child in the womb and hearing the heartbeat can help the mother understand that life is important and any cost. This has great acting and is not to be confused with some low budget production. But the showing all angles of the family perspective is very important to understand the whole situation. Showing both parents, new children and wife in the Fathers life. Wanting more government assistance in the abusive mothers life and her physical abuse is also displayed. Don't be afraid to see this truth of life, learn and help out the situation.

Good acting, dialoge and directing but not very entertaining.
24 December 2013
The movie revolves around two people in a home talking, discussing, arguing, fighting, crying and looking back on their past relationship, that's it seriously. You immediately think to yourself that this would be perfect for a two person play and how did it make it to the big screen. But to seat there in your seat and watch Fred (Stanley Tucci), an attorney behave like some 16 year old and gorgeous Velvet (Alice Eve)have to speak to Fred like a child is almost insulting to your intelligence. As the conversation continues you begin to sense that their relationship is somewhere in the Fatal Attraction category. Fred speaks to Velvet like she is on the witness stand but Velvet is the adult in the room. After a while the conversation is getting old, scary and you wish the thing would just end. Not so fast, the movie ends in a very unique way that will make you take a deep breath and say "You got to be kidding me."

Last Vegas (2013)
7/10
Enjoyable, funny, nostalgic and meaningful.
30 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
A flick with DeNiro, Douglas, Freeman and Kline can either be a bomb or a success, right? Then you add experienced actresses like Mary Steenburgen and Joanna Gleason and the odds get better. Top that with the young stars of today like Jerry Ferrara (Entourage), Romany Malco (Weeds & 40 Year Old Virgin), Michael Ealy (Barbershop) and you have a winner. This is nostalgic, meaningful, funny, colorful and upbeat. The music goes perfect with the cinematography of the Vegas scenery. You could almost call it Everything You Always Wanted To Known About Life Over 60 and A Midlife Crisis But Was Afraid To Ask. It does have the feeling of The Hangover and What happens in Vegas... but on meds.

Delivery Man (2013)
5/10
This is not a comedy, I repeat not a comedy.
28 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I went in expecting a comedy but got a serious drama with not really a bit of humor to make it funny. Watching Vince Vaughn fumble around in his role as a meat delivery man can seem kinda humorous but its almost annoying. But when he discovers that years ago his donations at a sperm bank have now made him the father of 533 children, his outlook on life changes. As he is trying to deal with his current relationship, his gambling debts and a lawsuit, he goes on a quest to learn who some of the 533 kids are and what they are doing today. What I do like is that he discovers the importance of life, Fatherhood and acceptance of responsibility. But more importantly the kids are also on a quest to find their biological father. So we watch a man child grow in to a father in more ways the one. Nothing funny about that.

Nebraska is slow & old but written well in black and white.,
22 November 2013
When you watch a movie that's filmed in black and white you can expect hidden meaning and purpose. Nebraska would of been allot better filmed in color to keep it from looking like The Last Picture Show. The slow pace of the story needs a pick up that the dull humor can't make up, even though it did get laughs from the audience. With that said, the acting and story line are good but I need to stay awake to see the whole movie. But the characters really attack my intelligence all the way from Billings, Montana to Nebraska with what appears to be pure ignorance or lack of common sense. There's only so much small town living I can take at one time. Its worth seeing once but only once.

Holiday has everything you want in a classic sequel and more.
16 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The Best Man from 1999 is one of my all-time favorites and I seriously had my doubts this holiday version could match it, but it does. All the characters return in this funny, raunchy, hilarious, serious, sad and then happy again Christmas reunion. During the past 15 years, all the character's careers have been successful but with a few kinks. They all still need to face the unresolved issues from the original movie in order to try and get along for the holidays. It wouldn't hurt to rent the original to get to know the backgrounds of the characters before seeing this version but its not required. The forgiveness between Lance and Harper played by Morris Chestnut and Taye Diggs is brought back to the surface. Quentin, played by Terrence Howard is one of the smoothest and coolest players you'll ever see in action and is memorable. Candy and Shelby who are played by Regina Hall and Melissa DeSousa is cat- fight crazy in their dealings with Julian who is played by Harold Perrineau. Robyn, played by Sanna Lathan is pregnant but has to try and deal with Nia Long and her past encounter with Robyn's now husband Diggs. Long has a new boyfriend played by Eddie Cibrian that she introduces to the gang and all the drama that goes along with it. The story does take a very sad turn when Lance's wife Mia, played by Monica Calhoun reveals that she has a fatal illness which will change the Christmas Holiday forever. But this isn't the ending, the movie does leave on a happy note with the birth of Harper and Robyn's baby in an almost perfect ending. This is good holiday movie entertainment which I compare to another Christmas favorite, Nothing Like the Holidays from 2008.

Should be called the dark, cold, wet life.
14 November 2013
I became a fan of Stephen Dorff after his role in Sophia Coppola's Somewhere and Emile Hirsch in the great Alpha Dog. Even the smaller roles with Kris Kristofferson and Dakota Fanning are remarkable in this movie. But all the good acting still keeps the flick just a notch above average. Its not so much about life in a motel or all that, but the lives and decisions of two brothers and all the drama that goes with it. Dorff plays an immature amputee who is dependent on Hirsch and does a great job. Man, just watching Dorff complain and cry is almost nerve-racking. The dark, cold, snowy, gloomy scenes make you feel the weather, but I wish there was more to the story line than just good acting and the scenery.

About Time (I) (2013)

About time an almost perfect flick on love and time travel.
9 November 2013
You can call it a chick flick if you want but this is purely amazing. Very rarely do you find a modern love story with some far out characters, humor and deep meaningful emotions that all revolve around love and time travel. In the style of Being John Malkovich, Groundhog Day, Midnight In Paris and some Nicholas Sparks flick with a British Flare, the family secret of time travel creates a unique story that is superbly entertaining. You will either walk out the theater with a smile on your face or complain that Rachel McAdams is always in those kind of movies. The characters Kit Kat, played by Lydia Wilson portrays the free flowing sister is hilarious and warm. Vanessa Kirby plays Joanna, the friend of McAdams who sparkles in every one of her scenes as the love story begins to take hold. I hope to see this one several more times.

Ender's Game (2013)

No adults allowed. A future teen space academy reality show put me to sleep.
9 November 2013
I expected allot more from this flick but was left with the understanding that its truly meant for kids to watch not adults. I went with my 22 year old son who enjoyed it. He liked the maturing of Ender Wiggin (Asa Butterfield) and how he grew from shy student to a leader in the academy. But I guess if watching a bunch of teens studying, playing, fighting and working at a futuristic space academy is cool, then enjoy yourself. Harrison Ford is like the Star Wars leftover guardian of the teens and the token "old person" in the movie. I did recognize Ender's sister Valentine who was played by Abigail Breslin from her role as the young girl in Little Miss Sunshine. Other big named stars are Ben Kingsley and Viola Davis and they just hung out with Ford.

Big Hollywood again showing big pharmaceutical is bad, really?
8 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Based on a true story, I did a little research and learned that the details in this flick are accurate regarding some of the legal and medical aspects, but some of the other plots and characters were for entertainment purposes only. Throughout the movie you can't stop thinking to yourself that wow, Matthew McConaughey lost almost 50lbs for the role. You kinda wonder if he was even feeling well during the filming. But after watching this I left the theater wondering why all the blame pointed towards the medical industry but not any on the consequences of personal responsibility. The acting from Jennifer Garner and Jared Leto is very good, the other smaller roles seemed like something from a B-movie.

The Counselor (2013)

Unique perspective of crime through a confusing story line.
7 November 2013
The all star cast is what keeps you interested in this very confusing story and also keeps it from getting a lower rating. The first half of this flick is like trying to find your way through a dark maze and the only light is the big name actors trying to show you the way out. The director goes from scene to scene with Michael Fassbender and Javier Bardem, Fassbender and Penelope Cruz, Bardem and Cameron Diaz, Fassbender and Brad Pitt, Fassender and Rosie Perez and then back and forth, all along leaving you trying to figure out who is bad and who's fooling who. All that just to say that the world of crime and drugs are a lying, ruthless, violent, sex and greed driven life.

The few funny scenes don't make up for the many bad ones.
27 October 2013
This flick is half the real, crazy, way out MTV's Jackass pranks and a very boring fake story line of a Grandpa driving his Grandson from Missouri to North Carolina. The few funny Johnny Knoxville pranks don't make up for the absolutely ridiculously snooze fest of a plot. Some of the pranks on real people and their reactions are very funny, don't get me wrong. But you are going to have to endure some raunchy, sickening and down right gross stuff that is not what you go to a movie theater to see to be entertained. I just wanted this flick to be over, there are better things I could be doing or watching. I went with five people to watch this and sure we laughed but in the end, we all agreed this was a big waste of time.

Unique, brilliant and relevant Joseph and his Brothers story for today.
19 October 2013
This biblical story of Joseph and his brothers is uniquely portrayed by Brady Gray and some real characters that anyone could relate too. This is how the story would play out if it had happen today. The dream sequences, the brothers removing him from the family and Brady starting a new life are all superbly done. I was surprised by the good acting and all the characters seemed real to the story line. This 90 minutes flick could of went longer just to keep distance between Brady's prison time and his returning back into the work force and meeting up with is brothers again. The main quality I took from the movie is that patience is a powerful character trait. I can't wait to see this one again.

Two hours, felt like 4 hours, should of been 90 minutes.
18 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Based on a true story, I always try to put myself in the situation and how I would react to my surroundings as the movie plays. The first thing is the feeling of fear the begins to overcome you when the Captain of the ship Tom Hanks warns the crew of the Somali pirates following them. Then as they are about to aboard you sense that feeling of despair and how you would fight to survive for your life. As Hanks deals with the Pirates, the crew is hiding in the engine room and begin to behave like some silly scary Movie spoof doing everything their not supposed to do. From this point the flick drags on and you almost are able to predict what will happen next even if you don't know the true story. After the crew is rescued, Hanks is taken in for his medical exam and debriefing. This is the scene where he is absolutely magnificent and almost brought me to tears. He portrays a person who is still in shock, unaware of his surroundings, obviously suffering from PTSD and that scene alone should qualify him for a Best Actor nominee. This would of been a pure firecracker of a flick if it didn't drag on so long.

Twisting, Suspenseful and Gripping Masterpiece.
13 October 2013
Very few thrilling flicks grace the movie screen that has you almost yelling right in your seat like the movie Prisoners. The acting is real as Maria Bello leads this all star cast down a real road of what do you do when your children have been kidnapped from right from under your noses. Jake Gyllenhaal is spectacular as the detective who investigates the mystery crime in the small town. Paul Dano plays the suspect in a way that only he could do it. What makes this so real is the other acting of Hugh Jackman, Terrance Howard and Academy Award winners Melissa Leo and nominee Viola Davis. The movies only 2 1/2 hours long but seems like 4 hours with the intriguing story line.

Machete Kills (2013)

Machete Kills will kill you with boredom.
11 October 2013
Machete Kills is nothing compared to the first flick. Danny Trejo is joined by more cameo appearances that Hollywood Squares game show. The characters portrayed by the big stars are not matched up to make them half way believable. Charlie Sheen as the President of the U.S. is like a TV sitcom and Sophia Vergara screeching through the sound system almost makes you want to plug your ears. There are too many serious dialogues between nutty characters in this action comedy. The first Machete was uniquely funny with the movie watcher waiting for the next scene to scream laughing. This flick has you nodding off between scenes and has you wondering how much each actor got paid for their second rate performances.

Baggage Claim (2013)
2/10
To predictable, to corny and just too bad.
10 October 2013
I love a good romantic comedy but Baggage Claim in nowhere even near that type of movie. It seemed more like an corny SNL skit that lasts over an hour. I had the movie already figured out in the first 15 minutes and had to endure the rest of the flick. This plot is just one notch above that goofy Soul Plane from a few years back and a few below Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail. A better script, more realistic characters and a more serious touch the movie might be average. Paula Patton is beautiful as always that you can't deny and Ty Diggs is an accomplished actor but they need to move on into some more serious roles. My advise is don't waste your time on this one. I still can't believe I didn't walk out.

Enough Said (2013)

I loved this warm, real Baby-Boomer relationship comedy flick.
8 October 2013
Julia Louis-Dreyfus gives an Oscar performance as a divorced mother who starts dating but at the same time has an insecure daughter getting ready to head off to college. But this is a great cast that couldn't of been chosen any better, James Gandolfini as a middle aged with a very unique job, the amazing Catherine Keener is at the top of her game as well. The directing is almost perfect and the setting is so real it almost doesn't seem like a movie. During all the relationship stuff the movie still ties in the daughters and their teenage attitudes, their married friends and their issues. This movie is so warm and cozy its almost like sitting on the couch with a blanket watching it. If your middle-aged, been divorced and have dated, this flick will make you laugh, cry and want to bring your friends to see it.

Rush (I) (2013)

Great directing, acting, cinematography for an average story.
28 September 2013
The best thing about this flick is Ron Howard's directing, editing, cinematography, special effects and the soundtrack. I grew up in the 70's and it seemed like 1976 all over again. The fast cars and loud engines almost shake you in your seat and that alone makes for a good movie. The racetrack scenes showing the rain pouring down makes you feel something out of The Lord of the Rings. Now, the story line and driver rivalry seemed a bit average and not necessary entertaining. In fact it appears almost made up in parts and over exaggerated just to add some entertainment. But overall this is a typical racing flick from 1976 with updated technology for 2013.
