Sokea mies joka ei halunnut nähdä Titanicia (2021)
The Blind Man Who Did Not Want to See Titanic [2021, Finland]
I was able to catch a screening at my local film festival. Not knowing what the movie was about, I bought a ticket as I was super intrigued by the title. From the film's title, I was expecting some sort of deep symbolic meaning from the film. It turns out the title is exactly what the movie is about. A blind man who did not want to see titanic, well, and a little bit more.
We follow our main character, who is a film lover, especially John Carpenter and James Cameron. He loves Alien, Terminator, The Abyss, but refuses to watch Titanic as he considers it a turd. No joke. Our main character is slowly going blind and paralyzed from the waist down. Every day he talks to a girl on the phone, which is his only daily activity. When he realizes that her health is declining, he decides to go visit her.
This movie is technically perfect. It is able to immerse me and show how someone who is visually impaired lives and how they perceive the world, and in that aspect, this movie already scored a 10 for me. The whole film uses extreme closeups and shallow focus and only uses sound to immerse us in the world of our character, we see nothing but our character's face throughout the whole film, and not one single second was I bored. This technique causes every sound in the background to be heightened, immersing us in the film.
This movie was so hilarious at points I couldn't stop laughing, and I can dare say that it is funnier than many comedies I see nowadays. But don't be fooled, this is also one of the most intense films I have seen in years.
My only problem is the direction the film went; it could have gone any direction it wanted, but it chose the most anxiety-stricken path and placed our character in a situation he did not deserve. It upsets me that the amoral characters in the film never got the comeuppance they deserve. Besides that, this movie is such a great joy to watch, and I can't wait and hope for more people to see it.
9/10.
Los olvidados (1950)
Movie #3 Los Olvidados 9.5/10
Los Olvidados, which translates to The Forgotten, is a Mexican film from 1950 about teens living in the slums surrounded by violence and crimes on a day-to-day basis. Los Olvidados influenced two of my favorite films, Amores Perros and City of Gods. Hence I decided to watch this movie.
The film mainly follows a kid named Pedro who tries to find love in a ruthless environment while his mom refuses to accept him. He is thrown into the mix when a recently escaped juvenile delinquent, Jaibos decides to take him under his wing.
This film doesn't take time to set up as immediatly you are instantly thrown into the world of these troubled teens. Most of these teens want affection and love but never receive them, so most end up together. Some scenes are extremely uncomfortable to watch as the neglected commit horrendous acts. Seeing how far the kids are willing to go is hard to digest.
One of my favorite aspects of this film was the editing. There was a scene which was my favorite in this film where Pedro has a nightmare. In the nightmare scene, jump cuts and overlaps are incorporated to show Pedro's uneasiness as he processes everything that he had gone through that day, from an appalling incident to simply wanting his mom's affection.
The way the film was shot was also extremely unique. In one scene, Pedro is hungry, and he finds an egg. He decides to make a hole to drink from it. With the realization that maybe it was rotten, Pedro throws the egg straight at the camera with frustration. The egg white and yolk ooze down the screen, immersing us in Pedro's pain.
The kids' acting in this film were phenomenal. Some of the kids were only the age of 8. This movie carried such a grim and dark topic that being able to perform in it is extremely difficult, but the kids were so good in it when it came to portraying their emotions and how they feel and how all they want is someone to love them back.
I loved every second of this movie. However, I wished the film pushed its boundaries even more to show the horrific environment they lived in and contrast it with the dream world. When Pedro wakes up from his dream, he is not terrified whatsoever, even though that dream was something straight out of hell. Instead, he proceeds to go on with his day-to-day life as if nothing ever happened, showing us that his life is already a nightmare; nothing is scarier than the slums.
This movie is an extraordinary feat of how one looks for affection in an environment that refuses to love you back. It is heartbreaking, painful, and gut-wrenching to watch but still holds today. I highly recommend watching this film as it delivers you straight into the slums of Mexico and puts you in the shoes of those who have no choice but to grow up in such an environment.
I give it a 9.5/10.
Los Olvidados is available to rent on Amazon.

The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
A spiritual cinematic journey packaged inside a nostalgic enigma
I remember when my mom introduced me to the first Matrix movie, I was instantly sucked into the Wachowski Sisters' futuristic world. Bombarded by Sci-Fi extravaganza and out-of-this-world action-packed choreography and computer graphics beyond its time, my eyes couldn't leave the screen. I knew this was one of those movies where I would return regularly.
This movie is one of those blockbusters where I would watch it either alone or with friends every few years. But as I grew older, I started having a different interpretation of the movie. I realized that the actions were only sugarcoating to capture viewers' attention. The real meaning lay beyond the action sequence. When you look deeper into the movie, you realize that it is a movie about spirituality. A movie about the desire for transformation. A movie about finding your true purpose.
When the 4th movie was announced, I remember some of my friends saying, "They should have ended with the trilogy; now they are turning the matrix into one of those franchises where they milk money out of viewers' pockets." Back then, I wasn't quite satisfied by how the sequels turned out, but I was glad that they gave it a conclusion instead of generating a never-ending money grab.
After walking out of the cinema today, I am glad to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the movie (The first Matrix will always be the best), even more so with some of the hidden subliminal messages that reflect the world we live in today - hint hint (Metverse?) A lot of viewers would probably just see this as another Hollywood blockbuster action flick. Look deeper, and you will realize that it is not much different from the world we live in.
Our main character Neo played by Keanu Reeves or now back in the Matrix as Mr. Anderson as a game designer, where he creates videogames about the Matrix Trilogy to enslave people around the globe in its own virtual world (Complicated right?), but he soon realizes something is off when he starts to see through the Matrix glitches when his boss asks him to make a Matrix 4 videogame. Battling to understand if the world he lives in is real, he once again has to follow the white rabbit and discover the truth behind what is happening.
This loud uproarious action-packed mind-bending addition to the series has a lot of great exceptional things to offer, bringing back all those nostalgic moments of the first film. Throughout the first hour of the movie, as we watch Mr. Anderson get sucked back into the Matrix. I can't help but feel satisfied watching Action Choregrpaher Yuen Woo-ping (who brought us some of the best martial art movies of all time E.g. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Kill Bill) choreograph the fight scenes, adding another layer of punch to every action setpiece. We also get introduced to new characters such as Bugs, played by Jennifer Henwick, and also Morpheus, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. The film does a great job in allowing the new character edition to shine while also allowing our main hero in the film to radiate. The charisma of the unique characters helps propel its storytelling forward.
The first segment of the movie was so compelling to watch with heart-pounding scenes and psychedelic computer graphic imagery that will cause you to grip the edge of your cinema seat. Unfortunately, the second segment couldn't quite hold up to the hype from the first portion as we watch Neo return to the real world. With a sudden abrupt cut from a rollercoaster thrill ride, we are suddenly thrown a bunch of narration from characters explaining what happened to their world after the Matrix Revolution, which didn't quite fit the film's tone. From a rambunctious buildup, it all suddenly turns quiet but not in a way that compels viewers to learn and understand more about what happened while Neo was gone. There were a few shots of the now newly rebuilt world they live in but instead, they decided to focus on exposition that is not too compelling. I was hoping to see how the world has evolved visually, not just through vacillating dialogues to propel the story.
Don't worry, the last segment picks up tremendously as Neo has to venture back into the Matrix to save Trinity - Played by none other than Carrie Anne-Moss. The final part of the movie touches on one of the things I love most about the movie. Love. Love can conquer anything, and that if you are meant to be together, the universe will do anything to get you back into each other's arms. Throughout the movie, the word "Fear" is brought up quite a few times; Neo kept saying he was afraid. But when the movie's final segment arrives, he finally realizes that there is nothing more potent than love. Love is the most powerful weapon anyone can have. If you let it guide you, you can do anything and achieve everything.
Matrix Resurrection might not be the best of the series, but it did fill a hole in me that the trilogy couldn't. Will there be a Matrix 5? God, I hope not. I think this is the conclusion it deserves, but you never know with the series' success; they might try to push another trilogy forward.
Life is beautiful, although sometimes we may feel like we are stuck in a vicious cycle, like a slave working 9 to 5 every day. Just like Mr. Anderson in the Matrix, a lot of us are afraid to venture out of our comfort zone (including me sometimes). We, as homo sapiens, always feel safer with what we have in our vicinity. It is part of our nature brought down from our ancestors. But is this really what we want, though? The Matrix challenges that. Do you want to live like this for the rest of your life? Or do you want to take the red pill? Be adventurous, be brave, conquer the world with love, and let the universe guide you and allow you to see through the Matrix. The choice is yours.
8.5/10
This will probably be the last film I watch this year in cinema, and I am glad I finished my year with the Matrix Resurrection. I hope everyone has an amazing year ahead and that you make the best out of the remaining two days. Let go of fear and let love guide you. Peace.
May everyone have a great New Year :)

Saint Maud (2019)
An unnerving psychological horror guaranteed to creep up on you days to come...
So here's the thing, my mom hates scary movies and she barely ever watches any. Somehow I was able to convince her to watch Saint Maud. Well, technically I lied and told her it's a movie about faith in God and it would be a great way to end the Christmas holiday with more festive zeitgeist while celebrating and commemorating the birth of Jesus...
Anyways, my mom finished the whole film while yelling "What a sickening movie" "That's disgusting" The whole time her eyes never left the screen. And that my friend is the power of filmmaking. A movie that is so horrific to watch, but still manages to capture your attention and compel you to view till the end all the while having a sickening feeling in your stomach. I loved this film.
Saint Maud is definitely not for the faint of heart. The movie follows Maud, played by Morfydd Clark, a young nurse isolated and lost who experienced an obscure traumatic event in the past which leads her to devote her life to Christianity. Upon taking on a new job caring for a patient, she decides no matter the cost she has to save the dying patient's soul.
An amazing debut from the director Rose Glass and an amazing top-notch performance by Morfydd Clark as Maud.
This movie is one of those slow burns where a lot of viewers decide to quit halfway. Don't. I agree the first 20 minutes or so might seem like it doesn't have a lot going on, but if you look into each frame you realize that each shot is packed with emotion as we get to know our main character Maud. Beautifully and intricately crafted, by the time the movie is over you actually savor the beginning segment of the movie, it's kind of like an after punch.
I have seen a lot of gory films and a lot of them weren't able to terrify me even with their shock factors. Saint Maud does have its blood-soaked scenes but nowhere compared to some of the movies I have seen. Some of the most disturbing scene which made my mom squeak did not not involve showing the actual bloodshed. Instead, this movie relies heavily on lighting, cinematography, and its original soundtrack to set the tone of the scene. Every scene in this movie is dark and dimly lit and every single shot carries this sense of dread and eeriness, even when our main character Maud does the most simple task. We were put in a disquietude state throughout the whole movie.
With horror movies filled with cliche plots and mindless jump-scares that actually ruin the fun in movies, this low-budget independent psychological horror about isolation, looking for a higher power, finding a purpose in life is actually one of the best horror movie I have seen this year. This movie is guaranteed to creep up on me for days to come.
I highly recommend this movie if you are looking for a fresh and new horror gem. Oh and my mom recommends it to :)
9/10
Available to stream on Netflix.
Stay safe everybody and make the best of the last few days before New Year.

Don't Look Up (2021)
A hilarious satire bound to upset and enrage some viewers
The biggest problem with this movie, which is also what I love about it is its comedy and jokes. They are so dead-on and direct that copious amount of people will find this movie very offensive. Adam McKay tries to use this extreme method to grab ahold of his viewers and address those situations, but after watching this movie, I realize the brilliance of this movie is also its downfall because it is going to enrage a lot of viewers.
In a world so divided nowadays, there are a few topics that people try to avoid discussing at the dining table and one of them is politics. Get ready to add this movie to the list. Don't Look Up tackles a lot of political topics, and situations that are happening across America right now. A satire that targets some of the most sensitive topics is bound to polarize audiences. You are either going to love it or hate it.
Let me start by saying I enjoyed this movie on many levels. Putting all political views aside I went into this movie to enjoy its cinematic technical brilliance and not let anything political affect me. If you decide to go watch a movie (especially this one) then you know what you are getting into, just let go and immerse yourself in this experience because this movie has a lot to enjoy. If you saw the trailer and find it offensive then don't watch it. Simple.
Putting aside all the political aspects of this movie, this movie does have a lot to offer. With its unique editing style and its original futuristic idiosyncratic soundtrack and superb class and A1 acting from Leo and Meryl and more, the jokes and comedy land with an even more muscular punch that left me laughing out loud throughout the movie.
Before you watch this movie, just ask yourself, are you going to be easily offended? If not this movie is not for you. Are you willing to let go of your political views to go in and immerse yourself in a cinematic experience? These are some questions you should ask yourself before watching. A movie that is guaranteed to polarise audiences turned out to be one the funniest movie of the year.

Pig (2021)
Revenge is not always the answer...
When I watched this movie, I had no idea what I was getting into. While I was scrolling through IMDb, I saw the title for this film and it says "A truffle hunter... searches for his foraging pig after she is kidnapped." and immediately I thought "Ok, we are getting another John Wick movie but this time with a pig". I was sold.
I was wrong. This movie was nothing like John Wick, not even close. If you are expecting a violent revenge movie, you are most likely to be immensely disappointed. However, this movie did surprise me in many ways, and I am glad I saw it. It was a beautiful yet very painful movie to watch at the same time.
Our main character played by Nicholas Cage does an amazing job. At first, I was hesitant about watching another Nicholas Cage movie since over the past few years I have watched a few Nic Cage movies and he always plays these over-the-top characters, but oh boy not in this movie. His character in this movie is very unpredictable and unstable like a ticking bomb. You have no idea what he is going to do next. He is very calm in every scene but deep down you know there is more to his past. Throughout the first half of the movie, his identity is almost kept secret. You have no idea who or what his character motives are other than to find his pig, making it an unnerving ride of a film. The supporting actor played by Alex Wolff also does a great job.
The ending for Pig packs such an emotional ruthless punch that will probably stay with me for a while after I finished the film. My only problem with the film was the first half where the pacing was kind of uneven, but when the last half of the movie kicks in and you discover more about Cage's character, that's when the whole movie started propelling forward and I was absorbed into every second of the movie.
I am going to say this again, this is not a revenge movie or action movie, it's more of a movie about grief and how one suffers from it and how you choose to live with it. This movie is packed with emotions from beginning to end and once you get into Cage's character's shoes you will be absorbed into his world and you will feel for him and the decisions he makes and I loved every second of it.
Kudos to Michael Sarnoski for making his first amazing debut. I will be sure to keep an eye out for future films from him.
I give this movie a 9/10.
Hawkeye (2021)
Finally Hawkeye gets hit spotlight!
Hawkeye has been one of my least favorite character throughout the MCU, but ever since we got a glimpse of Ronin in Endgame I realized that there is so much more to tell about the character. So when I heard them making a TV show about Hawkeye, I was hoping they would explore more of the aftermath of Infinity war and how it has affected Clint and the show did just that.
Being part of the Avengers, Hawkeye never really got to truly shine. Always being sidelined due to other more significant characters like Ironman or Cap, Hawkeye never truly got the screen time he deserved causing viewers to never truly get to connect with his character. Hawkeye finally gives us a chance to delve into his backstory and to see not only his physical wounds but also the mental ones that left an excruciating stain from the previous aftermaths that will continue to haunt him throughout the season.
But for me, the real gem of this show is Kate Bishop played by Hailee Steinfeld who is hilarious and such a likable character (and also a terrific actress overall). I just cant wait to see her pop up in future MCU projects. The chemistry between Kate and Clint just adds another layer of enjoyableness to the show as we watch the two bond throughout the series.
This show also has some great cameos from other previous marvel projects which will make you go "Ok did that just happen?" Guaranteed to make your jaw drop if you are a Marvel fan.
The action in this show is also very well choreographed and filmed, with an amazing car chase scene that will get your adrenaline pumped and an epic season finale. But that is also one of my major problems with the show, not the action it was astoundingly well crafted.
Throughout the show when a major event happens, the incident would be quickly captured and be on the news, social media, etc... So there would usually be consequences. During the car chase scene, Kate would be seen firing arrows with no mask on what so ever but no one seemed to have noticed her what so ever which I find kind of odd. I was expecting there to be consequences like her cover blown or whatever but the show did not touch on any of that whatsoever. The same thing can be said for the final episode. I feel like the creators of the show were like oh we need car chase big explosions and so on so that we can keep the audience engaged. To be honest I kind of prefer a smaller action set-piece since I feel like it would be more fitting for the show. Like I said dont get me wrong I loved the action scenes but it's just kind of weird that there were no consequences after colossal explosions and cars being whammed into one another in broad-daylight.
Overall, this show does justice to Hawkeye for the lack amount of screentime he got from the MCU and I am glad he finally got his time to shine and watch him mentor Kate Bishop for the future generation of Young Avengers.
Oh and did I mention there is an adorable dog and lots and lots of trick arrows :)
9/10.
Papillon (1973)
Papillon 8/10
Based on a true story, Papillon is about Henri Papillon Charriere who is wrongfully convicted for murder and sentenced to Devils Island, a harsh and dreadful prison island. There he befriends a fellow inmate and together with a few other inmates they plot an escape.
First of all, Steve McQueen is fantastic as Papillon. You root for him along the film and hope he manages to escape. The chemistry between the McQueen and Hoffman is terrific. The cinematography is topnotch in delivering the harsh setting making you feel like you have been in prison along with the characters.
I only had a few problems with the film. One of them involves a scene of solitary. I found that scene to be a tad too long. I understand why the director chose to elongate the scene since he wants to show how lonely and dreadful it is to be trapped in solitary. Unfortunately, I found it to drag a little and think it could be slightly shorter. My other problem is the 30 minutes before the finale, I think that the pacing for those 30 minutes was a little off, some scenes seem to unfold so fast it took me a few seconds to understand what happened. Other than that this was a great movie. I will definitely buy this and add this to my blu-ray collection. A 8/10.
Now I can finally watch the remake and hopefully Hollywood doesn't ruin it.
Green Room (2015)
Dumb characters ruined the movie
When I first heard of the movie Green Room the story instantly hooked me in. This might have been one my most hyped movie this year. I have been waiting forever and now I finally got to see it. Was it any good? I was extremely disappointed. The first 30 minute of the movie was actually pretty good, it all turned sideways when the character are trapped and have to find their way out. I have to say the characters make the dumbest decision ever, also every time they try to run a minute later they run back into the same room and hide and have stupid conversations. That is basically the last hour of the movie. The only reason I gave this movie a 5 is Patrick Stewart. He was great in this movie and I wished they included more of him and had a better role for him. I was disappointed in how little screen time he had. Also there were some good dialogue throughout this movie. Other than that I was bored out of my mind. Really. I give this movie a 5/10.
Ich seh, Ich seh (2014)
A beautifully shot horror film from Austria
Goodnight Mommy is an Austrian horror film about two twin boys who moved into a new home with their mother who had a cosmetic surgery. But as time goes by, the boys start to suspect that under those bandage isn't their mother. I have to say I enjoyed this film immensely, this movie kept me engage for almost the whole ride, but there were some flaws to it.
The first half of the movie was beautifully shot with some great suspense. Every frame you feel like something bad is going to happen. The mother was really creepy, she gives viewers this really sinister vibe. Out of no where she would pop up giving you the slither. Even when some shots aren't focusing on her you see her passing by the side of the camera, that is enough to give me the goosebumps, since you fee like she is going to pop up any second. The only problem was the editing, it was a little slow for the first half. The second half of the movie kind of had a down fall to it since it lost its psychological horror tone, it didn't really feel like it was the same movie. I was hoping it would pick up and it did even though it didn't really have the same tone as the beginning. The last third of the movie was this torture scene which didn't really felt like it matched the movies tone even though it was really well shot, it kind of felt like you are watching another movie.
The movie itself has a great plot twist, when you finish and look back you can see that it actually works, everything that happened in the movie actually makes sense. There were one or two scenes that didn't have to be in the movie, there is this one scene where two volunteers from Red Blood comes and ask for donation. I really didn't think that scene was necessary since it didn't flow with the movie.
I have to say this film is a lot better then todays Hollywood horror movie filled with stupid clichés. If you are into psychological horror movie or art film this film is defiantly for you. I am going to give this movie a 7/10
Knock Knock (2015)
A slow and dull movie from Eli Roth
Knock Knock is a movie directed by Eli Roth and Starring Keanu Reeves. The movie is about a husband who is alone at home on weekend when two women came in for help. Whats starts of as a normal night until Evan Webber played by Keanu Reeves has an affair, the two girls then reveals their horrifying plans they have for Keanu reeves. I have to say Eli Roth did a bad choice in choosing Keanu Reeves as the main character of the movie, it didn't feel right for Keanu reeves to play the role of a father in this movie, it had an unnatural feeling to it which makes the first 20 minutes of the movie kind of boring since you feel like the acting is kind of fake. He also didn't seem to fit the role of this movie, he should defiantly go back to doing another epic action movie like John Wick. The two girls played by Lorenza Izzo and Ana de Armas In the movie actually did a good job, they actually made me feel uncomfortable, I could also see that Keanu Reeves' character was uncomfortable, you can see that whenever the girls sit next to him he moves away and he is constantly checking his phone for the cab to arrive, hoping to get rid of them but at the same time we can see him struggling since we can feel that his character wants to have the affair. In this one scene when he enters the toilet instead of closing his eyes he uses his hands to cover it, which gives me a feeling that he kinds of want to have the affair. You know he is going to cheat on his wife but the way Eli Roth showed the character uncomfortableness and the acting by the two girls makes you root for him, since you know something bad is going to happen and you don't really want it to happen on Keanu Reeves. It makes you want him to stop and just get rid of them. The only problem with the beginning scene is the dialogue which got boring pretty fast since the girls spend the first 20 minutes apologizing for everything they did which gets kind of annoying, then all of sudden they start talking about sex and affairs which doesn't seem to fit the characters. I was kind of bored during those 40 minute with the boring dialogue nothing really develops. I was hoping the movie would pick up after that and it did kind of. Although the movie itself had some intense moments, the movie is still pretty slow and nothing really happens, all we see is Keanu Reeves being tortured mentally for the last half of the movie. I expected more tension in the movie but the movie lacked it. There were one or two scenes where I was actually holding my breath, but other then that, most of the time the movie was dull and slow. I get Eli Roth's dark message but because the movie was boring it just didn't really stick on to me, unlike the movie Hostel. Overall this movie wasn't that interesting, the movie felt kind of flat, there wasn't much tension in the movie and the dialogue weren't that good. If you are an Eli Roth fan, I think you might find this enjoyable. Otherwise I wouldn't recommend seeing it in theatre. Wait for it to be on Netflix or TV. I am going to give this movie a 4/10.
The Martian (2015)
Very Disappointed
The Martian is directed by Ridley Scott and is based on the novel by Andy Weir featuring Matt Damon as our main charter Mark Watney. The movie is about a group of scientist who needed to abort Mars due to a severe storm, during the process Mark Whiney was hit by a debris and considered dead. He has to find a way to survive and contact Nasa and inform them that he is Alive. I have read the book and I loved it. This movie was on my top list this year, and guess what, I hated it. I have to say I was bored out of my mind while watching this film, every second of it I just wanted it to end. In the book Mark Watney was in constant danger, I was rooting for him the whole ride and I was looking forward to do the same in the film. But in this movie, I was so bored I almost forgot about him since the movie is filmed on earth half the time. In the book, the story mainly focus's on Mark Whitney survival, but in this movie, more then half of the movie was filmed on earth, this ruins the feeling of loneliness on Mars, it lost the grip of dangerousness since we are are constantly surrounded on earth with human beings. This gives the feeling that Mark Whitney is going to survive since we see that half the movie people are trying to save him instead of seeing Mark Watney struggle to survive on Mars alone. This really ruins the movie, it took all the tension away.
There were some scenes that could have defiantly been made a lot better. Ridley Scott could have done a way better job if he could show what caused the disasters to happen in the movie. In the book when something bad is about to happen, Andy Weir describes it and shows the reader that Mark Whitney is in danger and he has no clue about it, this makes me root for him and want him to survive. It gives me a sense of danger he is in and how helpless he is with out any clue how much trouble he is going to be in. The way Andy Weir writes it also helps foreshadow that something really bad is going to happen and you don't know when. In the movie Ridley Scott didn't explain anything which doesn't help build up the danger Marl Watney is in. The soundtrack also didn't go well in the film, it made me feel like sometimes Mark Watney was having more fun in space then in danger. I have to say Ridley Scott did a really bad job in turning such a great novel in a movie. Although I was bored out of my mind I have to say there were some beautiful shots of Mars and space in the is movie and Matt Damon did a really job in his role. I am going to give this movie a 2/10.
