Fright Night (2011)
8/10
Took me by surprise.
27 June 2012
I had low expectations for this movie from the previews. Sure, Collin Farell being the "evil vampire" was an intriguing idea, but I had been getting sick of the Vampire phase that seems never-ending.

Boy was I surprised. I had never seen the original Fright Night.

It wasn't all attempts to add stupid humor in with horror. It made me jump, and there were some funny moments, but it was more horror; which I enjoyed and did not expect.

The acting was pretty good (another surprise for me, then again I had been expecting some cheesy vampire movie) and the make-up fx were beautifully done.

My only real complaint would be the CG effects. Sure, some of it was pretty good, but the overall was disappointing. Not nearly as bad a sparkly vampires, but that's a different story.

Overall, I do suggest this movie. It's a good watch with a decent story. Especially if you're not trying to compare it to the original.

Rango (2011)
5/10
I prefer Fear and Loathing better.
27 June 2012
Don't get me wrong. This was a gorgeous movie. The computer animation was stunning, and it was nice to hear Johnny Depp going back to something oddly familiar.

In fact, a little too familiar.

I thought this movie was meant for kids. As I was watching it with my niece, I found out I was wrong. This movie reminds me of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas with a little mix of American Tale: Fifal goes West.

That's it. There is nothing else I could think of to say about this movie. I honestly don't care if this review isn't helpful, the movie wasn't worth it.

Don't make a kid's movie for adults.

Awake (2012)
10/10
I've watched the entire season
3 June 2012
It is one of the most compelling and unique shows I've ever had the pleasure of watching.

This show has a complexity that reality TV fans might not be able to handle or enjoy. I like certain reality shows myself, but their simplicity is easy to grasp compared to the beauty of the mind's struggle that Awake provides, as well as the power a mind can hold. It keeps you wondering which dream is the reality, all the way to the end. The small hints provided throughout the show forces one to think, and the twist is worthy of M. Night's early work.

I'm truly sad to hear that this show is not getting a second season, because I wondered where they could have taken it after the last episode. This show was a work of pure genius.

I loved Battle Royale
1 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
To be honest, I was hesitant about this movie, mostly because it seemed like a new, toned-down version of Battle Royale. I had never read the books, but I feel that if a movie is good enough to inspire someone, then the book will be good enough to be read.

I want to read the books.

I didn't care for the shaky cam, especially in the beginning, but that's a personal preference of mine. I was highly disturbed that there was a world where children would be allowed to kill each other for sport. I kept wondering "Who would let this happen? Why are their people cheering for these children's deaths and not mourning them?" Rue's death satisfied that question. That was the most beautiful scene in the entire movie. Her death struck a chord with Katniss, an entire district and me. It was wonderful to finally see someone raging at the death of one of these kids, and she was the perfect vessel for it.

The lovey dovey stuff was to be expected, but this movie didn't try to shove it down your throat like a certain sparkling vampire movie did. It was subtle, and not even something of assurance, but sweet.

Just watch the movie. That's all I can say. I'm gonna go read the first book of the series. That's how good this movie is. It inspires the viewer to read and I'm ready for the next installment

The Divide (2011)

Just a big no for me
1 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I had had high hopes because it starts out with a lot of action. Unfortunately, the characters spiral into madness faster than the Star Wars Holiday special spiraled into stupidity. At first there was hope that the cliché bad-ass would turn around and become a decent person, but no. The clichés stick and each character just becomes more sick, twisted and demented in what seemed to be a minimal amount of time. The lead character, Eva, had nothing that anyone could connect to, and was pretty much eye-candy for the camera... and not by much. This was just a huge no for me, mostly because I had so many unanswered questions, and the characters had lost any possible depth (except for Michael Biehn's character) way too swiftly. After a big blowout that kills the two bad-asses, Eva leaves the final two survivors to burn alive, which didn't seem to fit her character. Then again, nothing seemed to fit her character. She was a great big blah of nothing the whole time.
