The Resident (2018–2023)

Different than every other hospital drama
19 September 2018
Sure, most other hospital dramas touch on the broken American healthcare system but The Resident is the first one to make is the focus. Sure, it's kind of corny at times, but at its root it has a great heart - nurses being the unsung heroes, insurance company super villains, new technologies lost on aging surgeons unwilling to hang up their stethoscopes, and the treatment of patients as numbers instead of human beings by hospital administration. Sometimes the way the patients are talked about and treated by the hospital management is harder to watch than any surgical treatment. It's worth a watch.

Exceeds Trailer and Hype
28 April 2018
Trailers are meant to make you want to see a film and showcase some of the best moments of a movie to draw your attention. Knowing that trailers are meant to do all of that, it has been a very long time since a movie has been 100x better than the trailer but Infinity War was just that. I was worried the film would feel rushed and generic with forced cameos but I was dead wrong. This was by far the best superhero film I have ever seen. I laughed, cried, and left the theater thinking "what the hell just happened"? I highly recommend anyone with the slightest love for Marvel to see this movie. You will not regret it!

Cecily Strong and Blake Griffin Steal the Show
22 April 2018
I found the film entertaining overall. I think Whitney Cummings sought to make a movie with an underlying message of something women empowerment but the fact that I can't figure out what that is should tell you how well she accomplished her goal. By far, I found the most enjoyable couple to be Cecily Strong and Blake Griffin. They were both cute and hilarious together. I wish the entire film was just focused on their characters.

Borgia (2011–2014)
3/10
Accents Galore
31 March 2013
As an Italian American with deep roots still tied to Rome, I find this show a disgrace to the history of the holy city.

Where to begin? First of all, pick an accent and stick with it. Lucrezia has a German accent, Juan is French, Cesare is British and Rodrigo is American? Are you kidding me? This is absurd. I would rather listen to an actor attempt a terrible imitation of a historically accurate accent than just sound like an idiot.

I understand that Showtime's version of the Borgias has a much larger budget with the ability to hire more profound talent, but I think the budget has nothing to do with this mess of a show. Jeremy Irons is a legend and does not simply do a good job portraying Rodrigo Borgia, but he becomes the man in the flesh. John Doman reads lines meant for a much more elegant tongue than his American accent allows. It's cringe-worthy at best to have to suffer through one of his monologues.

Mark Ryder makes it difficult to like Cesare (though maybe Cesare is not meant to be 'liked'). However, on Showtime's version Francois Arnold makes the audience both hate, pity and love Cesare all at once - a feat Mark Ryder could never accomplish. Stanley Weber lacks the ability to portray Juan as a wild, hotheaded coward as history tells. His character simply fades into the background like a wallflower. I would also have to go as far as to say Marta Gastini's portrayal as Guilia Farnese is the only actor that lives up to their character.

Don't even get me started on the historical inaccuracy of the show. If you think showing full frontal public nudity and gore makes this more historically accurate then you need to watch Showtime's The Borgias - then you will see what truly should make a show accurate.

In summation, if you want to watch a great period drama series about medieval corruption in the papacy just watch Showtime's The Borgias. You will only be disappointed watching Borgia.

Awful Normal (2004)
1/10
Awful Awkward
3 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was not what I anticipated. I expected an emotional journey leading up to an uplifting conclusion where these two women attempt to take back the innocence that was stolen from them as children. If you're expecting the same - you will be extremely disappointed. The feeling that I experienced throughout the entire film was simply uncomfortable.

Celesta (the victim of the abuse and film maker) made it hard for me to empathize with. She seemed to make light of a situation that she claimed to have influenced her entire life. She and her sister informed their therapist that their own father had taken showers with them and encouraged them to play with his genitals as children. The two women verbalized that strange relationship with their father as if they were ordering a salad - appearing as if that upbringing was normal. There was no real explanation to why that was alright but the solitary molestation they experienced was so traumatic.

What I found the most odd and almost obnoxious was the scenes leading up to the confrontation with Allen (their molester). They were laughing and carrying on then their wait turned into this bizarre montage with quirky elevator music while they had a little party in Karen's van. When Celesta went to confront Allen she made casual conversation while she laughed and acted as if all was fine. Then after they confronted him Celesta left the building singing "We Are the Champions" by Queen. I was almost more disgusted in her as the victim than Allen as the predator.

The only real emotional display the two sisters had was awhile after they left. There was not one person in the entire film I related to or even rooted for. I myself have never experienced sexual abuse but my mother did as well as my best friend and to a much more extreme circumstance compared to these two girls (especially Karen). I think this is why I find Celesta and Karen to be so... well, disgusting. They made light of a horrible event and joked their way through the whole confrontation. I would never claim to be able to relate to such an awful experience, but having two people in my life who lived years of sexual abuse during their childhood has given my insight into the mind of a victim.

Celesta and Karen were so odd and off-putting that I found Allen to be more normal than the two girls - and that is pathetic because he is a monster. All I can say is that I hope those two women found some sort of peace after the experience. I think this film is an insult to victims of sexual abuse. I have never felt so much repulsion and discomfort from a film before, and I would never recommend the film or re-watch it in a million years. I should not have been more revolted by Celesta than her predator. I am so shocked and appalled that this film has a rating above 5.0 on IMDb.
