The Affair of the Necklace (2001)
I watched it twice and loved it
Everything was well done in the movie; it was intriguingly written, well acted and one of the best period dramas I have watched. The pace of the plot kept my interest and it was cleverly presented. Not sure why some folks didn't like it. The scenery was authentic and magnificent and the action and performances flowed easily through it. It gave an in depth insight into the French Revolutionary period and inspired me to do more research. It was well worth watching. It did annoy me a bit to have the French peasant class portrayed with cockney accents; but that is my only real complaint. I thoroughly recommend this as an engrossing Sunday movie selection. I do so love a mystery.
Heatstroke (2013)
Entertaining tho predictable
I watched this movie to see the performance of Maisie Williams: and because the scenario was Africa. It was enjoyable, yet not exceptional. Major performances by the actors were impressive. Yet, there was a lack of dimension in the character interactions as the movie progressed which bothered me. It went from 'I hate you' to 'I respect and admire you' without the depth of interaction I wanted to see. This might have been the direction or screenplay because the on screen performances of the main characters was certainly genuine enough. I gave this a 6 because I am glad of the experience of watching it. I did not give it more...because it was just entertaining and I saw no instances of exceptional development between the characters which certainly was possible. Glad I watched it but won't bother to watch it again for any exceptional moments of clarity or a glimpse into human relationships that the film might have celebrated. A Hollywood film...entertaining but lacking artistic depth.
Brigham City (2001)
Boring and predictable.
Really a waste of time. Although the performances were more than decent, the pace and direction of this movie lacked suspense. I could guess the killer from the beginning and all the tedious character development not only failed to entertain; but also, added nothing to my enjoyment of the film.
The last 10 minutes of dialogue did raise some interesting questions about religion and legality....otherwise....I could have done something much better with my time.
I love mystery crime plots. This one, however, fails on all counts. Good performances by actors. I suspect the failure was either in the screenplay or direction. Actually, the plot is not that interesting either.
Good movie to put on before you sleep or if you want to do housework...but certainly not a good viewing for mystery lovers.
Killing Daddy (2014)
Puerile daddy complex over dramatized.
Vapid characters and acting. 2/3 through the movie I reviewed the IMDb user reviews to see why it got a 7.0 rating and only then decided to finish watching it. Characters are shallow and under developed with clichéd performances....interest in movie relies upon plot twists from left field....actually; couldn't wait for it to be over. Might appeal to the under 16 yr old crowd. Waste of bandwidth and a movie to be totally forgotten in cinematic history. :( I enjoy all sorts of low budget thrillers; but this one is a high budget non movie. I can't understand why it has a 7.0 rating here. Usually I rely on the IMDb ratings but in this case we are totally at odds.
Klondike (2014)
Good watch, especially if you like historical drama.
I give this only a seven because of the miscasting of one major role: Belinda. But the series is still enjoyable to watch and certainly worthwhile for a few hours of fascination. However, the performance of Ms Connor (Belinda) was a major flaw, in my opinion. She was too young for the part, failed to deliver a performance with the depth of personality her character required, and at times seems stiff and out of place in her portrayal of her character. Had the role been better cast, this historical drama would have accomplished its' goal of taking the viewer back to the drama and tragedy of the Klondike gold rush. Her presence in her every scene pulled me away from the authentic magic of the movie.
Dawn Rider (2012)
An ex Pinkerton agent returns to his home in Wyoming to see his father and becomes enmeshed in discovering the identity of a band of outlaws.
This was a remarkably well done western with class performances by Christian Slater and Donald Sutherland as well as the rest of the cast. The authenticity of the era the movie represents is excellent. The plot is involving and complex with well thought out character development. No canned music or banal stereotypes, typical in such movies as The Quick and the Dead. I found the movie thoroughly enjoyable, with a moderately paced action and well done action scenes. The music enhanced the plot without manipulating the viewers emotions. The hero/villain roles are complex. If you like Westerns, this movie is definitely worth watching.
Good for Nothing (2011)
An English woman arriving in the old west is kidnapped by an outlaw cowboy.
Really enjoyed this movie. An excellent plot and all performances were top notch as well as the authenticity. It has all the elements of a superb spaghetti western. The character development is richly textured through visual means. Dialogue is short but this only enhances the character development. The music is well suited to the plot - and there is no canned banal use of it. The plot provides a touch of comedy and irony based on the real circumstances of that time era. It is similar to one of the fine westerns Robert Duvall has starred in recently and is quietly gripping from beginning to end..If you are a western buff, you will definitely enjoy this film.
