Elizabethtown (2005)
Great Little Story
I spent a few minutes reading over the bad reviews here on IMDb, and I was honestly shocked. Hearing that Orlando Bloom did a horrible job and that the whole movie was pointless made me wonder if I seen the same movie. Granted, Orlando Bloom hasn't been a favorite to me (He wasn't great at all in 'Pirates' or 'Lord of the Rings') but I thought he was great in this film. He was honest to the role and played it perfectly. It's ten times better than if Ashton Kutcher or Sean William Scott would have played the part. That would have made it horrible in my eyes. As for it being pointless, I'm sorry but this definitely was not pointless. If anything it was a lot more truthful to what someone would go through during something like this, unlike some films I see. And there are hundreds of films here on IMDb that have higher ratings, but are completely pointless all together...Like...hrmm...Garden State?
Anyway, onto the 'review'. As you might have assumed, this was a great movie and I loved it all. Everything about this film was wonderfully done and I appreciated it's sincerity. Most of all, Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst's relationship was another on-screen pair that will always stick together in my mind. Along with Natalie Portman's role in Garden State, I immediately fell in love with Dunst's character. These two girls are my personal definition of 'The Perfect Girl' and I just enjoy watching them every second while they are on film. What makes them so great is that they are girls that I can see myself with, and that's what makes the movie more realistic. The love they share is flawless. Though I'm aware not all relationships are this well drawn out, this one is more plausible. When comparing this movie to some sappy film, this stuff could actually happen.
And to clear up to people who liked Garden State and think this is just a copy but are wondering if they'd like it, Yes. To me, Garden State was a great flick. But this movie has nothing in common. The only similarities are that the main characters go out of town because their parent died, and then they fall in love with a girl. In Garden State, Zach Braff goes BACK to his old town where he hasn't been for years. In Elizabethtown, Orlando Bloom goes to his fathers hometown and has to represent his family back in California..er..Oregon. The only thing that parallels the two is the dead parent.
But oh well, I'm just sad that critics and others didn't get this film the way it should have. And instead of enjoying it like I did, they compared it completely on Garden State.
Grandma's Boy (2006)
A Comedy for Gamers
I was lucky enough to catch this at an advanced screening at GameSpot's G.A.M.E. expo and I enjoyed every bit of it. I couldn't argue one bit that they decided to show it at this certain event because the film fit so perfectly.
The movie is no more and no less than any other typical Happy Madison production, which proves to be a good thing for their formula. However, this movie seems to tailor to gamers much more than Happy Gillmore would and it does it really well.
The comedy is mostly nonstop. Was this because I was smitten to the movie as I was waiting in the long line to get into the theater, holding my Signed poster and free Grandma's Boy merchandise? Perhaps..But regardless, I enjoyed every second of it.
I must admit that the whole movie is set to one tone by the first main joke of the movie. Letting this joke slip will lose much of it's effect, but it truly sets the tone of the movie, letting the audience know that it's definitely a comedy with strong scenes that just stick with you.
Hilarious for Gamers but Good for just anyone.
The Butterfly Effect (2004)
A Great Sci-Fi Thriller
Intro: I first seen the trailer for this movie a while back at some movie, and I knew that it was worth a watch. The plot seemed interesting, the feeling was the same way I felt with Donnie Darko when I first seen it. So I knew it was worth while.
Plot Summary: A young man is struggling to get over harmful memories from his childhood in which he suddenly blackouts, but while doing so discovers a technique that allows him to travel back in time and occupy his childhood body during the blackouts changing his history forever. However he also discovers that every change he makes some how alters his future.
Plot: 10/10 Sure the plot of traveling back in time to change the girl you loved has been used quite often, but add a bunch of plot twists and turns and a little bit of a scary element and you got your self a great overall plot.
You start from the beginning of his life and move forward to the present day Ashton Kutcher. He tries to look into his past by remembering but when he visits the woman of his life, something happens. So then he tries to go back to bring her back to life.
The whole feel of the movie is great. You are dragged along with Evan (Kutcher) during his time traveling and remembering.
Acting: 10/10 The acting in this movie is outstanding by my standards.
Ashton Kutcher, ("That 70's Show" and Dude, Where's My Car?) showed that he doesn't have to be such a maniac with what he does and be constantly goofy. He brings out his seriousness and gives great life to Evan.
Other Actors/Actresses include: Amy Smart (Rat Race, Road Trip), Eric Stoltz (Pulp Fiction, Anaconda), and Ethan Suplee (American History X, Mallrats), as well as the rest of the cast, did so well throughout the movie because every single one of them had changed through the alternate universes. Whether it being a druggie, dying, or any other life changing experience that can change the appearance.
Elements: 10/10 The factor of horror is also quite high. I didn't expect it to be any bit scary but it was. It's suspense was also quite high. I was literally on the edge of my seat. And thats hard to say these days.
Cutting and Special Effects: 10/10 Just wow. The visual effect like explosions and stuff blew me away(no pun intended). Everything was clean and the transitions from his blackouts to go back in time to when he was reliving his past were also clean and cut.
Directing: 10/10 Directorial Debut of directors, J. Mackye Gruber and Eric Bress, The Butterfly Effect is a good Drama/Sci-Fi movie for just about anyone willing to think. Although a highly unlikely event (time travel), the direction of this movie is good and keeps quite a constant flow.
Overall: 10/10 This is a great flick that everyone for a thrill, love story and twisting plot should see. So see it..
Jigoku Kôshien (2003)
Wow...Just Wow.
This is one of the worst films ever made.
Now, with that being said, I highly recommend it! If you like movies that are just plain stupid and silly, then this is for you. I really can't say anything else to get anyone to watch it. It's really just plain bad. But, in doing so, it is hilarious and just great.
You really can't get any better with vicious (and cheesy!) baseball brawls ! In fact, everything about this film is just oozing of cheese.
I think the greatest bit in the entire film however is the constant changing of "Bancho". Such a great addition that makes zero sense.
I'll leave with saying: JUBEI SPECIAL!!
Donnie Darko (2001)
10/10 work for Kelly
Intro:
I heard of this movie somewhere off the internet and it just seems so cool. The plot and the overall theme of the movie just lured me into buying it. After looking all over for it, I finally found it. The last copy. I couldn't wait to just sit down alone and watch what it was all about. And I was blown away by the impact of this movie.
Plot: 10/10 The plot seems like it is easy to follow for a long while in the movie, until it hits a sudden climax and everything changes.
Donnie Darko suffers from many mental disorders. He is haunted by a giant bunny rabbit named Frank who tells him the "World" will in 28 days. His first encounter with Frank, prevents him being killed with a jet engine that crashes through his room, allowing him to live a tangent universe until that day comes when the World does end.
The whole movie is full of hidden meanings and messages that come clear after watching it several times. But it is worth it.
Characters: 10/10 Throughout the film, you are able to know all the characters. They area all portrayed by great acting and shot by the wonderful director, Richard Kelly.
Acting: 10/10 Jake Gyllenhall, (October Sky, Bubble Boy) plays Donnie Darko. Very well, actually. He captured the true character that was presented to him and it couldn't have been don't better by anyone else. Jena Malone, (Cheaters, Life as a House) plays Donnie's "clueless" girlfriend, Gretchen Ross. She has no idea what is going on with Donnie and Jena's acting really absorbed that whole feeling that she gets from him.
Also in the cast: Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jake's Sister. (Secretary, Mona Lisa Smile) Daveigh Chase. (Lilo and Stitch, The Ring)Patrick Swayze. (Dirty Dancing, Ghost)Noah Wyle. (ER)Drew Barrymore. Also produced. (Charlies Angles, Duplex)
Directing: 10/10 Richard Kelly did a superb job in creating his own screenplay and bringing it to life. It was well written and filmed. Amazing for a debut director.
Overall: 100000/10 This is an amazing film and everyone should see it. It is no doubt my favorite movie of all time. I've watched it 5 times or so now and I enjoy it every time. Get it and watch it!
