Alex Honnold: The Soloist VR (2022)
(literally) breathtaking
I watched the first scene of The Soloist on my second day in the VR world. Scene 1 catapults you into Alex Honnoid's world. The shock of looking down reminded me of the glass-floored walkway over the Grand Canyon - your lower brain is screaming DANGER, even while your upper brain understands that you are safe.
The movie spends lovely time behind the scenes with Alex, in his home, in interviews, and then with a fellow climber and Alpinist as they find crazier and crazier things to do in the Dolomites and the alps, including prancing - not walking, *prancing* - up a jagged, snow-covered mountain spine with death on either side.
I can't remember ever being so riveted by a filmed experience, and I was sad when it was over. I would have gladly watched 4 more hours.
Alex Honnoid is Spiderman, and in this film, you almost become him.
Bridesmaids (2011)
FUNNY
I avoided this movie for 11 years because I hate toilet humor and had heard "some stuff". I will just say this: I still hate toilet humor, but this is so well-written that the gross stuff is earned. It serves to raise the stakes in the protagonist's struggle to maintain relevance in a key relationship. Still gross, goes too far - but then it's over and honestly, this movie is FUNNY. Women doing funny stuff for funny reasons. Make of that what you will; this squeamish toilet-humor hating viewer is now a fan. Grab this before it disappears from Hulu!
Ms. Marvel (2022)
Charming characters, well acted, hope there is more than Episode 1!
Ms. Marvel is charming. The characters are well-acted (for the most part). Episode 1 is super light on plot (no nod to backstory of the special ____ that gives Kamala her powers) etc.
The show is NOT perfect, but the reviewers giving it 1 stars are doing so just because it "dares" to have a Muslim-American lead story (shudder). These folks need to get lives.
Back to the show...
The lead actress is wonderful; she reminds me of a younger Haillee Steinfeld from Hawkeye. She inhabits that space that straddles many archetypes without squarely landing in any of them. "Kid next door" (Peter Parker) "dreamer kid" (Ferris Beuller), "nerd with strict parents"...
Her sidekick is a tech-whiz played by an actor with an astounding resemblance to young Neil Patrick Harris.
Her family provides hilarious background (her brother and dad are hysterical while the mom is an Auntie, gossping and shopping and meddling).
Look forward to 2nd episode!
