The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
If I could imagine a perfect movie this would be it.
When I think of the perfect movie that has everything in it I think of this. Acting, writing, directing, drama, comedy, love, hate, excitement and so on etc. Oh did I mention writing? Because the dialog is brilliant! The way the actors play off each other is incredible.
I was already a huge fan of Wes Anderson before seeing this and if you're a fan you'll love the direction and cinematography which is In brilliant Wes Anderson fashion.
F. Murray with that perfect voice, Ralph Fiennes never skipping a beat, Jeff Goldbum is brilliant, Adrien Brody, Harvey Keitel, Willem DeFoe, and Edward Norton all great. Saoise Ronan gorgeous and great. And of course Tony Revolori as young Zero steals the show.
10 out of 10 all the way. I may even have to give this one an 11.
The Toll (2021)
Dark humor brilliant acting well written.
Ok so if you like quirky, dark, a bit off the wall, really small town with comedy sprinkled in then it's here. I absolutely give this gem a solid 8! Extremely well written, and wonderfully directed. Cinematography is fantastic, and all of the acting is right on the money Each character plays their part exceptionally well and I'll give a lot of that to the director.
Michael Smilley and Annes Elway are absolute standouts!! You can literally feel they were motion says they're acting.
Think David Lynch meets Wes Anderson and then you have it.
The storyline is very easy to follow although you're not certain what's going to happen next and what's better than that.
I would highly recommend this.
Evil Dead Rise (2023)
Great horror movie on its own with homage to the classic
OK first of all Lee Cronin knocks it out of the park. On its own this version of the Evil Dead franchise is an excellent horror movie. Plenty of jump scares, awesome camera work, background sound effects and a wonderful script. Oh did I mention gore, blood, gore and blood. Well that too. A true horror movie fan will not be disappointed!
The acting is superb! Especially Mirabai Pease and Alyssa Sutherland. But really all the actors were brilliant.
Now for the die hard Sam Raimi Evil Dead fans, like myself.... Yea this was an excellent movie. The Easter eggs are a plenty and they pay homage to the Evil Dead franchise. Spoiler, my fav was the eye. There's even Easter eggs to other horror movies one being very obvious.
I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it highly!!
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022)
Surprise! Not expecting that! Funny and Clever! Well worth it!
Total surprise hit! Dare I say Brilliant? Ok I'll say it. Brilliant!! The writing is clever and hysterical! Movie moves along right from the start and goes to places you don't expect. Nicholas Cage not only turns in a fantastic performance but he's witty and funny and dramatic and once again proves his acting chops. He also works with Pedro Pascal like a well oiled team. Sharon Horgan is great too. I'm going to recommend this highly with a solid 9 out of 10. If you have a sense of humor and you're tired of the same old junk then give this a try. You won't be disappointed you won't be bored and at the very least you'll have a bunch of laughs.
The Whale (2022)
Besides Fraser there's Zero entertainment value here!
Boring, sad dark. This movie has zero entertainment value. None whatsoever. I'm still waiting for the value? All movie long I'm thinking...Well this stinks. Yes Brendan Fraser's performance was Oscar worthy but that's it. Can you say boring? Yea Boring!!! And Spoiler Alert!!!! His character was a terrible person who failed miserably at almost everything he did. Except abandoning people. He did that pretty well. The end is basically a ripoff of two movies combined. "What Ever Happened to Gilbert Grape" and Big Fish." But the biggest difference between those two movies and this one is that they're great and this one stinks.
