The Sixth Man (1997)
This was a good movie.
I enjoyed this movie thoroughly when I was a kid. I thought that is was very moving. Most movies claiming to be hardcore emotional haven't made me want to cry as much as this movie did. I think I'm going to rent it tonight just to see it again. I think it was funny as well. The rating it has received in here is a shame. It should be at least a 6, 7, or 8. The two brothers played well together and the basketball scenes were cool. This movie was good from beginning to end. Wayans was great and so was the other guy. Having brothers would make you enjoy this movie even more I'm sure. I would recommend this movie to anyone looking for a good sports movie with a lot of heart.
Finding Neverland (2004)
A Great Film
Over the years I've found that some movie leave me with a long lasting emotional attachment. I think this film is going to be one of them. The movie is about the creator of Peter Pan, James Barry. He develops a relationship with the Davies' Boys. Their father died of "chin caner" and only there mom and grandmother were left to take care of them. The story tells the story of his marriage falling apart, and the process of creating Peter Pan, being influenced by the boys. The film delves into his marriage and his career as well. I saw it yesterday and thought that it was very well done. Johnny Depp was phenomenal in playing the role of a man with never ending imagination. The kids in the movie, especially Peter, made this movie special.
There has been a debate that James Barry (the creator of Peter Pan) had a Michael Jackson like relationship with the boys. The movie acknowledged this and pointed out its falsity. Barry was simply a man who had no children and needed those boys to fill the void in his heart (In real life the children's parents were both still alive when the play was first performed). At first you'll feel sad, and gradually, you'll begin to feel very good. Nobody left the movie untouched.
I wouldn't be surprised to see some Oscar nominations come out of this film. The scenery was superb. J. Depp could be nominated for Best Actor. Kate Winslet - Best Supporting Actress. Julie Christie - Best Supporting Actress.
After seeing Finding Neverland, I can't was to see Johnny and Freddy in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003)
The Truth
Master and Commander was a hell of a movie. It's not just another remake. It seems like all movies made now are just remakes. This isn't a remake. Its the kind of movie that will be remade 40 years from now. It is an original movie. If you can't understand the plot of the movie, I pity you.
Basically the Interceptor gets orders to take a "prize" the ship Acheron. The movie begins with a great little battle and from that point goes to chase mode. It doesn't seem like the movie would be that long just because the plot is so simple. However, along the way we get a lot of character description. This is common in the more classic movies, movies that are truly great. i.e. Gone with the Wind, The Godfather, Citizen Kane, Raging Bull.
The setting is described flawlessly. The ship looks exactly as a ship from the 1800's would look. It shows the cramped living conditions, the poor dental hygiene, and the more primal mind frame during this period of time.
The acting performances were outstanding. Crowe does a good job and really seems to be a sea captain. The actor playing the Doctor did an excellent job as well. Its amazing to see him come from A Knight's Tale as a comedian to Master and Commander as a serious cello playing doctor that has a thirst for discovering new species on the Galapagos Islands.
This movie has few flaws and for that should be considered one of the better movies of the year.

American Beauty (1999)
The Truth
I'm tired of reading these reviews from people without any clue of what this movie encompasses. The movie is like no other. It is a complete original. That is rare these days. Living in a town similar to the one depicted in this film it makes thing all the better for me. Of course the dreariness is taken to the extreme, but I think it could be done no other way. The performance by Spacey was phenomenal. Benning did well. And the rest of the cast was stellar. I don't think I've seen a movie that shows the ugly side of modern day upper-middle class communities in such a sly comical way.
I dunno. If you're a person that has to be chipper and can't stand being a bit down, then you may not like this movie. Very well written script, nice cinematography, and stellar performances make this movie a one of a kind masterpiece ever person should see.
