Let There Be Light (2017)
Not worth the money.
Sorbo, the entire family, seem to think that an Atheist can suddenly turn to Christianity. It doesn't work that way. Atheists usually were Christians or of some faith that failed drastically. Atheists don't take anything on faith, they work on FACTS. Sorbo was once a passable actor on Hercules, now he is like his washed up character. This is very 'based' on his life having had a near death experience with a brain aneurism. The rest is pure fiction like his god is. If there was a rating of 0, I would have given it.
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
Underwhelmed.
Most people want lots of big bangs, violence and no plot....then this movie has that. It is almost a carbon copy of the original Star Wars movie. I wasted 2 hours waiting for the interesting part that never arrived. Glad I didn't spend my money on it. Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford and of course Chewwy all did remarkably well considering it was a GOD AWFUL movie. Who they hell is Rey? Where does she come from, abandoned or kidnapped as a child? Where did the force come from in her? How come both Rey and Finn can suddenly acquit themselves so professionally with a lightsabre? I mean neither had ever picked one up before yet can 'swordfight' like old pros and win. Where were all the intelligent people who never thought to as R2D2 where Luke might be? Gaping plot holes that you could never fill with expanding foam. Left me cold. Let's see if they can improve. George Lucas is probably laughing himself silly to see how badly Abrams mucked up.
It's in the Water (1997)
Good concept, badly made
I thought the film was mislabelled as a comedy. The title showed promise of hilarity but degenerated into a depressing scenario of lack of tolerance, bigotry, hatred of things not understood, and abuse. Quite frankly it was the most depressing movie I've seen in a long time. If you want a good movie of that subject try "Better Than Chocolate". Mind you it does represent a fairly accurate assessment of American tolerance especially down south where the radical religious groups are. My partner and I watched the movie waiting for the comedy to begin. With such a working title as it was, the screen writers, producers, directors etc could have had a field day and come up with a brilliant movie. Stereotypical homophobic characters are simply not funny in movies or really life. What I was expecting was a lovely town with gays in it, suddenly thrust into comic scenarios and panic over the state of their water supply. But no, instead we got a mish mash of male egos bruised because their wives dares to kiss another female, boorish, snobby gossipy women.........bah. American Trash is a better title for the film
Rat Race (2001)
Not worth the effort
This was a cheap imitation (sort of) of the Cannonball Run (at least that was funny). Must be the American sense of slapstick humour, not sure, but I didn't find anything funny in this movie just a lot of predictable overworn ideas. 1 out of 10 for this piece of crap. The actors must have been somewhat hard up for cash. Every conceivable joke has been used by either Mel Brookes or other comedians who think their stuff is actually funny. Alas American humour lacks finesse and the clever play on words, instead they rely on seeing who can beat the crap out of each other, playing dirty tricks, using high improbable and at times impossible situations. No comedian worth his salt would resort to such tactics except to present to purile childish humour to an audience with an equal lack of intelligence. I guess this is why the American people are forever kept in the dark and not told what happens in their own country....they are too bloody shallow to understand real life.
Stiff (2004)
I think I blinked and missed it.
This film, while written by a talented funny man, with a good acting line up, did nothing for me. It lacked a beginning, an ending and a plot. Finding a dead man then researching through everything, only to find Mr Whelan dogged by bad guys, and no link was ever established as to why. I expected better work from Aussie film makers. This only serves to send Australian films back 30 years when the merest hint of one sent shudders down my back. It wasn't funny, not even amusing, it totally sucked. An awful lot was said about fictional and notable Turkish names of employees at the meatpacking plant, yet no connection was established with them and that exclusive club, and having politicians playing cameos was just plain silly. Are Australian writers wanting to lose out to big budget companies in America when it comes to quality TV movies? The Australian public deserve better than the trash it currently gets. I'll give it a 1/10 and that's being nice.
