The Amusement Park (1975)
Painful, as intended
Yes the pain and compassion we feel for that character and old people in general
(the old version of us all) was the exact point of the movie. An important and almost metaphysical point that is still relevant today, if not even more relevant. Romero cleverly and powerfully executed it, throwing his character in a crowd that sometimes feels more violent and crual than actual zombies.
It nonetheless remains a painful movie to watch, which I was happy didn't last more than 50 minutes that already seemed way too long. There's a reason the master didn't release it, and that difficulty to watch it was probably it.
The Northman (2022)
More than just a violent movie...
It really is a movie about the history of violence and its endless cycle, the eternal confusion it creates between who is good and who is bad, how it can fool a heart and mind, and the futility of it all...
Robert Eggers tells his story without compromission, sometimes taking shortcuts, but always sticks to his ideas and delivers a truly blunt but meaningful movie. Bravo!
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
Should have been JUST a movie
This movie is trying to be way too many things. A Doctor Strange movie, a Wanda movie, a promotion for Disney+, for other MCU characters, trying too hard to be too as inclusive as possible... it feels compromised, diverted from what it should have been : a more assumed movie, a more adult movie. A Sam Raimi movie.
Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)
Déjà-vu
It isn't a bad movie, but at the end of the day it's just a mix of T1 and T2 in many ways. Some shots / lines / plot parts are directly copied from the first 2 movies. The Rev-9 is even a mix between T-800 and T-1000, only in black...
It makes me think of Star Wars VII where they call the 60+ years old characters back and use them to introduce new heroes, with the exact same recipe than the first movies. In that regard, killing John is just an excuse to tell the same story all over again, and makes the movie pointless.
On the plus side, Mackenzie Davis really does a great job and I really liked the enhanced human concept. The direction is ok and Arnold is also doing the job. Hamilton is trying a little too hard but was ok too.
It's a decent movie but it definitely doesn't live to the expectations I had when I read James Cameron was involved.
Glass (2019)
Never feels right
Shyamalan tries hard to convince us that this trilogy makes sense but it never feels like it does. In spite of another great performance from Mc Avoy, the movie never manages to be more than an opportunity to tag along the super-hero fashion, putting together movies that were not originally meant to be.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
A burst of creativity
An amazing adaptation of a comic book in many many ways. The 3D, the music, the comic-like graphics, the pace and the whole artistic universe are a total success. Well done!
Death Wish (2018)
Pro-gun pleaser
The movie is hugely political and the message is pretty clear : let's please the gun lovers and the right in general organic food = bad / gunshop : great with hot girls there / Lollapalooza : stupid youth that destroys Grant Park etc etc etc....) but still pretending we're self-aware so we can get away with it... Pathetic and gutless. If you're looking for violent action, go watch John Wick
Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)
Stunning direction, same old plot
A nuclear bomb to get from a terrorist in a thrilling hunt with spectacular action scenes and beautiful images. Entertaining but very predictable and déjà-vu. The lack of imagination is especially obvious in the second part of the movie and makes it totally forgettable in spite of Cruise's impressive stunts.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017)
Uneven on all counts
The last Besson's goes from inspired SF to pale copy of Star Wars and Avatar, from thrilling to boring action, from breathtaking CGI to cheap video-game-like effects, from interesting plot to stupid lines, etc etc... Even though there is always some second degree in Besson's movies (there are many similarity with the 5th Element on that level), it can't justify the cheesiness of some scenes. It's a watchable SF movie, but certainly not one that will mark the genre.
