Rich Piana Chronicles (2018)
Sad to see him wearing himself down for nothing
It's obvious that this guy took a wrong turn in his life at an easily influenceable and easily led age. An age where the temptations of life are hard to resist.
I used to watch Rich Piana's video's on Youtube every now and then. He is a great motivational speaker, business- and salesman, honest and transparent (to a certain degree) and besides a lot of other positivities probably most of all a great guy. It's debatable how he would have been without his business succes, while others in de branche with the same goals and lifestyle but no succes kill their wives and/or themselfs and such tradegies.
It's sad to see a guy like Rich work so hard thinking he's on the right track but actualy wearing himself down up to the point that drugs and an absurd goal on how to look physical control his life and it's too late to turn back, which is cleary shown in this documentary. He must have been in a lot of continuous pain, uncomfort and physically and mentally miserability probably the better half of his life. Which is visibly shown in his autopsy report, enlarged organs and stuff like that. Most of the footage shown in this documentary is from his last living year which clearly depicts the problems he faces. He looks weak and ill, he has trouble walking, the vains in his face are messed up and his eyes look delirious. Still, with all the physical and mental problems going on he remains the nice guy that is willing to help, educate en motivate people, and for that, he must be remembered, even though this isn't comming entirely from himself but is also from the businessman in him. In the end, everything he's done from obsessed eating and working out to accepting the pain and misery to achieve this pointless goal was for nothing. But hey, if your hobby is fishing, in the end, thats also pointless but your life is alot easier and without unnecessary pain and discomfort.
If he would have made other choices early on or someone coached him the right way he could have lived a great and by far longer life.
Vikings (2013)
Worth watching, but don't put it on top of your watchlist
When rating this show i consider a couple of perspectives. Like the story, historical accuracy, overall production value etcetera. Which leads to the conclusion, is it worth watching? Like everything in life, nothing is just black or white so I have to consider the pro's and the cons.
Season one is probably how a TV show must be. Mysterious, unlimited, exciting, a world of discovery and urge for more. A close look at an ancient and legendary character named Ragnar Lothbrok in a world full of mystery. By far different of how the planet is now. Back in that time, and even hundreds of years later, not many people ventured a trip across the country, or not the mention, around the globe.
What stands out is the Scandinavian/Norman like accent they mix in the English dialogue. Which doesn't give this show a professional feel. It is a choice of the producer but it annoyed me throughout all the seasons. On the other hand, it wouldn't be any better if everyone spoke with a Cockney accent and it does sort of distinguish all of the civilizations this show encounters but it kept bothering me. What is done really great is the confusion of confrontations between people who do not speak the same language and how this is presented to the viewer. We get an inside look on how both parties experience the other side talking gibberish.
From what I have read on the internet this show does follow the big picture about how Viking history at that time span presumably went. However, certain characters never existed, met each other or lived at the same timeframe, certain raids or events did not happen and so forth. This show collected all those events and characters during maybe a couple of hundred years, added and took away some and forged it into a continuous story. The result is satisfying and I even learned something about European history. And in the end, even written testimonials can never be verified so we can only guess how things would have been by reading stories in combination with archeological finds. And still, no one can tell the truth for sure and what exactly happened, just like with The Lord of the Rings or the Holy Bible.
After season one things went downhill very quick. The show lost my attention because of a boring and lengthy storyline and most of all uninteresting and annoying characters like the Seer, Rollo, Aslaug and Floki, terrible fight scenes where people die from the slight touch of a sword while in full armor and silly offensive strategies. Unfortunately, these characters, fight scenes and strategies lasted the entire show. Although there are some great large scale battles that are excellent and really show how intimidating and horrible it must have been killing each other with sword and axe while standing in the mud. Imagine standing in an empty muddy field surrounded by bloodthirsty men and women and killing someone with a sword. Unbelievable.
The silly offensive strategies clearly come forward in the first half of season four where the attack on Paris took place. Utterly reasonless offensive strategies and useless fight scenes probably to give the viewer some sensation. Some may like it but it ruined it for me and at this point I gave up on the show. I watched the first 10 episodes while doing house chores and stuff like that, hoping season five would be better. I then realized that season four had 20 episodes and I thought about giving up on this show. Not knowing that this show takes a serious turn in episode 11. The relationship and chemistry between Ragnar and King Ecbert is truly magnificent, not to mention the acting qualities of these actors. The second part of season four is what I was looking for in this show. And it turns out that Ragnar and King Ecbert carry this entire show. Well done. Luckily, this trend continues throughout season five but decreases fast in season six.
With 10 episodes left in late 2020, I can safely say that not everything in this show was worthwhile but overall it was pretty good at some points and really great occasionally but unfortunately a lot was just not good enough. Would I recommend this show? Yes I would, but don't place it on top of your watch list. There is a lot more you should watch first.
And yeah, the battle for Kattegat is fun, and maybe a second time. But taking over four times a season gets boring, even if it is historical accurate.
Well, only if the gods want it of course...
