Bob's Burgers: The Plight Before Christmas (2022)
Completely floored me
This may just be the best episode in all 13 seasons. What an incredible christmas episode. It combines all the best aspects of Bob's Burgers and of Christmas movies into a pitch perfect 20 minutes. The last couple minutes made me both tear up and laugh out loud.
The basic premise is classic Bob's Burgers: Linda and Bob didn't realize that all three of their kids a christmas performace in a different location in the same night, and Louise ends up not having a parent there to watch. The episodes where Louise shows her soft side are always a treat, and this one conveyed her feelings brilliantly without many words at all.
Our Flag Means Death (2022)
Absolutely delightful
Rhys Darby is fully in his element and hilarious as Stede Bonnet, the bumbling self-appointed Gentleman Pirate. The first couple of episodes remind me of Ted Lasso, silly comedy with a lot of heart. The show really finds its feet in episode 4. Taika Waititi is absolutely electric as a middle-aged Blackbeard who's become bored of the pirate life and is fascinated by Bonnet and his aristocratic ways.
Amazing lgbtq representation, we love to see it.
The Conjuring (2013)
Uninspired and forgettable
Nothing but overused tropes, not even a spark of a fresh idea to be found. Had to watch it twice with my roommates because we had all forgotten that we'd already seen it. Just deeply unmemorable. Completely middle of the road. Not a risk taken.
The title also has nothing to do with the plot, making it even more likely you'll accidentally watch it twice without realizing.
Acting 3/10.
Joseph: King of Dreams (2000)
Very good for a direct-to-video film
The movie is a sort of companion piece to The Prince of Egypt. The art style is the same, but it is obvious that this was made on a far smaller budget. The animation is pretty rough in some places, but not so much that it really bothered me while watching it. There are some very beautiful backgrounds and landscapes.
Especially noteworthy are the dream sequences, which use some more experimental animation. Joseph's two dreams have a style like a van Gogh painting, which works very well. The Pharaoh's dream uses CGI, and looks like a video game cutscene. I didn't like that one, but kudos to the creators for taking a risk.
The songs are all very enjoyable and well sung, but none of them really stuck in my memory.
I definitely enjoyed rediscovering a biblical story that I had almost forgotten. I think anyone who liked The Prince of Egypt will enjoy this movie as well, as long as they keep in mind that this was made on a more modest budget.
