Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023)
I wanted to like it, but it's SO bad
As a DC fan, I was really hoping this would be better than the crap they typically turn out. Sadly, it's just as bad (if not worse) than the majority of what they spew out.
The actors do the best the can with what they have, but you can tell that the writing is so bad that even Dame Helen Mirren can't salvage this train wreck.
The special effects were on par with what a lot of people can do at home, and the storyline was almost incoherent.
This movie makes "Black Adam" look like an Oscar contender by comparison.
I sincerely hope the addition of James Gunn to the DC universe will make a stronger impact with their films, and that we will see a lot less of this crap-fest going forward.
Blonde (2022)
Almost 3 hrs of my life I'll never get back
While I respect the director's attempt at "artistry," it's a shamble of differing styles that wears thin well into the almost 3 hour long ordeal.
I have a tremendous amount of respect for Ana de Armas taking on a role that not only required her to master a language she was not raised with, but also mimic the voice and tone of a Hollywood icon.
That is literally the only good thing I can say about this movie.
Fun fact - NetFlix is notorious for (sometime ridiculous) warnings before a movie or show, (IE: "Strobe effects / violence and heaven forbid.... SMOKING!") Whereas this film has domestic violence, graphic sex, full frontal nudity and not one, not two...but THREE abortion scenes - and the NetFlix warning simply said "Caution - Some nudity."
So....ya know....maybe not sit the whole family down to watch. (It IS rated NC-17 for a reason...Lol)
Moonfall (2022)
Laughably bad
It's like someone said "if only they could make a TRULY crappy movie without all the pesky believability of Independence Day, Armegeddon and all 246 Fast & Furious movies!"...and Roland Emmerich replied with "hold my beer."
In from the Cold (2022)
Just.....SO bad
I was hoping for a spin on the trope of "spy in hiding coming back into the field," and will admit that I didn't expect the "sci-fi" twist at the ending of the first episode.
After that, everything went downhill quickly. I can't really say anything about this show is worthwhile. The acting, fight scenes, dialogue.... all very bad.
Selling Tampa (2021)
Truly awful
Living in Tampa, I was looking forward to a realty (NOT "reality") show highlighting the beautiful homes nearby. Instead, I got a mix of "Million Dollar Listing"; with another "Real Housewives" (and I do NOT mean that in a good way).
I barely made it through the first episode, then I had to fast forward to the homes in the second episode just to get through it. (It seems the ratio is 15% of the show is actually about the properties, then 85% is focused on made-for-TV drama)
Needless to say, I didn't bother with anything beyond the 2nd episode.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
At first enjoyable, but took a steep decline
The first 2 seasons were enjoyable in the fact that it took a unique spin on the Star Trek universe, (no pun intended). However, the 3rd season was less than impressive (by comparison of the first 2), and the 4th season is downright awful! I genuinely wonder if the 4th season is being written by kids in school as an "extra credit" project.
I sincerely hope the showrunners find writers old enough to vote for the 5th season, ( if there even is one).
Invasion (2021)
Wait....That was it??
What a complete waste of time! I tolerated this show going from slow and boring to ridiculous and painful to watch.
A soldier has a broken collar bone (poking through the skin!) and is still able to carry another soldier (on the SAME shoulder) and then dig a grave by himself for that soldier.
A woman does not complete medical school, but is somehow the best doctor on the show.
I feel bad for the actors, doing their best despite such poor writing.
Completely avoid this disaster!
Infinite (2021)
Absolutely awful
The action was was solid, but that is the ONLY thing about this movie that wasn't horrendous.
Avoid at all costs!!
Away (2020)
Stay "Away"
Watching this is almost painful. I realize it's just a show, but I have to ask - if I can't complete a call in some parts of the country, how the hell are they doing it from SPACE??? Also, are the professional hair and make-up people 3,000 miles from Earth? (What astronaut wears lipstick while on mission??)
Yes, I realize these may petty complaints, but if the producers care so little about this show - why should I?
The Vast of Night (2019)
Underwhelming
Watched this because of an Amazon ad claiming it to be the "underrated sci-fi movie of the year". I was so bored the entire time waiting on something that never happened. The acting is good, the movie is well shot and the dialogue is pretty on point for the time. Unfortunately, everything else is garbage.
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels (2020)
Love Natalie Dormer, but this is garbage
A few people on here have said this might have been more successful if it were not associated with "Penny Dreadful" and was under it's own thing, and I am inclined to agree. I adore Natalie Dormer, but even she cannot make this show watchable. (I made it to episode 4 before giving up, and I feel I deserve a medal for making it THAT far)
