Good Will Hunting (1997)
Pretentious
A shallow movie about a "troubled" genius who is helped by another troubled genius.
The characters are just full of stereotypes in their behaviour, and there is some show off involved about how brilliant the person is.
In real life, even geniuses don't just pick up a notebook and solve things. Even they have to study and learn, just that it comes easier to them.
I also felt the life story was very linear - get found, get fixed, live happily ever after. Real life involves a lot more grey areas.
Acting wise, everyone is good. But the tedium of watching scenes unfold in a linear manner and see the main character getting 'fixed' made for a flat viewing experience.
One last thing - the psychiatrist says so much about falling in love and how it's not about looks, but knowing each other's imperfections. But when we reach the point where he tells his story, it's just a love at first sight type. Considering that the makers of the film were pretending to make such a deep movie, I had expected atleast this story to be deeper than that.
Break Point (2023)
Good stories, bad on-court camera work
Except for the first episode, I really liked the behind the scenes stories. To see some of my favourite players up close describing their journeys is very nice.
But as soon as we shift to scenes from an actual on-court match, the camerawork is horrible! They don't show the tennis, instead they show players up close in slow-motion as if they're showing a James Bond movie. That is very frustrating and spoils the episode each time.
For example, in the match between Nadal and Berretini or Swiatek and Sakkari, they kept talking about the drop shot or the incredible speed, but would not respect the game or the viewer enough to actually show some tennis.
It seems like Netflix has decided that the only way to sell the series is to make it like a cheap action movie, and not focus on actual tennis at all.
Aashram (2020)
Incomplete plot
They show the climax in the first scene and then start telling you the story.
You would expect them to reach the climax again in the last episode. But they leave the story halfway for the second season.
Considering the amazing web series we see nowadays, this is pretty average, though we do see some great plots revolving around the corruption and criminal nexus of saadhus primarily inspired from Ram Rahim.
