Il grande silenzio (1968)
A fresh look on the Western genre
A band of ruthless raiders terrorizes an isolated Utah town. The bandits are so vicious that dead-or-alive warrants were issued for their heads. There is no sheriff in town, however the residents rely on bounty hunters for help. The best of them is Loco (Klaus Kinsky) who combines courage, rationality, and a sense of humor to fight evil.
To get rid of the bounty hunters the outlaws call on an expert killer whom they call Silence (Jean-Louis Trintignant). Thanks to his incredibly fast draw and impeccable aim he can legally murder any man by first provoking him and then shooting him when he reaches for his gun. He would humiliate, demean and even torture a man to then murder him in cold blood.
The state governor sends a marshal (Frank Wolff) to help the town residents, but he gets waylaid by the bandits. They corrupt the marshal and make him arrest Loco instead of Silence. He also orders the townsfolk to collect food for the bandits as if that would stop them from pillaging and raping the town.
Fortunately for the town residents, Loco escapes by killing the marshal, rallies other bounty hunters and arrives at the nick of time to defeat the bandits and the nefarious Silence.
In a western it's uncommon for the bad guy to be the better duelist while the good guy wins thanks to the stronger character, wits and collective action. Other titles come to mind, like Firecreek with James Stewart, but nonetheless The Great Silence is one of the earliest films that takes this approach.
Waterhole #3 (1967)
Don't wste your time
The most lazy screenwriting I've ever seen. Nothing any of the characters do makes any sense, so that you completely don't care what happens next. Of course, it wouldn't be a problem, were the movie funny. Alas, the only joke in the movie is the screenwriters. Thankfully, they haven't done anything since.
P.S. And I like movies from the 60s and I like immoral movies. This one is just bad.
