Blue Beetle (2023)
Stands strong with the best of the DC movies
I'm officially dubbing Blue Beetle as the Mexican Spider-Man. He's unsure of himself as a superhero and a young man. He's funny, a little geeky, and holds back from executing when given the opportunity. Where he differs a bit is the family dynamic and the support he gets from each member throughout the movie.
The movie itself is fun and funny, packed with action and jokes, heartfelt moments between his love interest and within the family. When you combine all these elements, you get a character that really start to emotionally invest in, a movie that keeps you entertained, and a soundtrack that sneaks in some really great songs in English and Spanish. The 80's vibe you get from the movie is amazing, but not overwhelming.
For Mexicans/Latin Americans, this is our hero. Don't let the jokes and stereo types offend you, it portrays Mexican familia in a positive light. Blue Beetle could be a great addition to James Gunn's new DC as a key character to help carry this universe.
BlackBerry (2023)
Com-drama at its finest
Great casting, well written and directed, with a flow to it that makes the recently released "Air" feel sluggish. Glenn Howerton, known for Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia, shines as the protagonist (and antagonist) in a film where he taps into that rage that "Dennis" struggles to control on the show It's Always Sunny. He's hilariously scary, while being completely serious and devoted to the role. Jay Baruchel plays off that shyness we saw in "She's Out of My League", as the timid geek who created the phone we were all addicted to. Along with the other lovable geeks and their movie nights, this movie was fun to watch, even if they skipped through a few years at a time.
Let Go (2011)
Such a great cast, wasted
Dull storyline with not enough effort put into the the writing/script. The cinematographer did their work to create some good scenes - specifically, many of these were shot to encode some sort of emotion but fell flat due to the lack of dialogue or wasted dialogue between dull characters. Such a great cast wasted on this film about letting go, yet many of them got odd happy endings.
While the stories intertwined, none of them were very good and I was left feeling unfulfilled (like most of the characters), but I didn't get that "ah-ha" moment I'm sure they intended me to feel. Watch something else, anything else...
The Walking Dead: Rest in Peace (2022)
Not a finale
While this was supposed to be a finale, an ending to show we've all come to love and hate...this ended up being a teaser for future shows that will continue The Walking Dead Universe. Disappointing to see Rosita die and it only really extends to 1 year after everything, with a 2 min cameo for Michonne and Rick. The prior episode was better and had way more action/story to it. Great way to make everyone wait 2 weeks for nothing more than slight closure. With Dead City, Rick and Michonne, and Fear The Walking Dead continuing, I'm sure you'll have an opportunity to see more of this nonsense.
Disappointed and ready to avoid future spinoffs.
Beyond the Spectrum (2017)
Very well produced and written
Thoroughly enjoyed the production value of this documentary. Massive amounts of video, proof, interviews, etc. and the messages shared didn't feel like you were being sold on what they want you to believe. Similar videos promise big discoveries and usually under deliver, but this film deliveries - I really feel like I saw new material without the same recycled items you see in other documentaries. Enjoy!
