John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
I WILL NEED TO VIEW SEVERAL MORE TIMES
So full of ideas I am sure I need to watch it a lot more. Yeah it was great on the big screen. Like being there. Like you are a drone looking in on the action. Yeah some lemon haze half way in was a good choice for me. Better than a video game! Hard to believe I did not know so many of the spoilers since I followed the online info pretty closely. Over the last few pandemic years. Keanu is the quintessential action movie star. John Wick IS the wrathful deity. I have heard it will be available for streaming in May. I'll be running it all day.
Not for kids. Do NOT let your ex husband take little kids cuz he wants to see it. The good news is that it has intergenerational appeal as long as you are over 14 .
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Moment by moment joy!
I am part way through my 3nd viewing and there will be many more at my house on 65 inch 4K. So grateful that we have the home streaming option on HBO Max although without a pandemic I would love to see it in IMAX. Visually a treat for my sci fi eyes. But the real treat is the cast first and then the dialogue. Every line, after the initial exposition, had me weeping with the joy of revelation or laughing with joy! This is easily my fave movie this year. I suppose your average soul less swarm bot might rather see something less dense. I suggest sub titles so you don't miss any of the dialogue. I am aiming for no spoilers so I wont say any more except recommending it to everyone old enough to see an R rated movie.
Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020)
JUST WHAT WE NEEDED!
This movie could not have turned up on my tv at a more opportune moment. I was smiling hard the first half and then there were lines that brought tears to my eyes. So many truisms. Gave me a big emotional lift. Story hung true to the first 2. Everything comes together in unexpected ways. Cast is wonderful. Remember this is a comedy although there is much more than laughs. Highly recommend to put this one on the top of your quarantined list.
Someone Like You... (2001)
THANK GOD MOVIES TURNED AWAY FROM THIS DIRECTION
Amazing cast. Very sorry they had to use their considerable talents for this kind of movie. It's a 1930's rom com with more sex. If thats what you want to see. Not me.
Always Be My Maybe (2019)
An Asian American Romcom was needed
And Always Be My Maybe filled the bill. Terrific cast. Whatever planets aligned to get Keanu Reeves was perfect. Love Ali Wong and Vivian Bangs. I predict this will be an evergreen for the genre.
John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (2019)
A LOT to take in at one viewing...
Fully recommend seeing this movie a second time while its at the theater. There is so much to take in and so much happens so fast. I had a lot of internet information during the production and there was still a lot new to me. Theater was full. Crowd was diverse in ages. Maybe more men than women. Fully want the 4K disc to view in slow motion. BTW dads, do not bring your kids, under 12, just because its your weekend and you want to see John Wick 3. It's a R rated movie.
Replicas (2018)
Thriller from beginning to end
I find Keanu chooses interesting scripts and this movie added nicely to his filmography. Exciting with a very believable concept of human cloning and transferrance of consciousness. Several unexpected twists that I did not see coming. I was glued to the big screen from beginning to end. Maybe closed my eyes for that car crash and one other moment. Even knowing how it turns out will not stop me from viewing Replicas again. Keanu is brilliant at dragging me kicking and screaming out of my own mind and into his vastly capable imagination. This emotional rollercoaster seemed utterly believable to me. I came out of the theater energized by a strangely satisfying ending. Anyone trashing this movie is without a sense of imagination and wonder and who needs them anyway?
He's Just Not That Into You (2009)
All Star Cast
I give it 2 stars since there is so much talent in the movie...but it's really a poor depiction of actual real life that relies on outdated stereotypes of human nature that should embarrass anyone watching it. I think less of the people that accepted roles in this movie.
Destination Wedding (2018)
THIS WILL BE A CLASSIC ROM COM
A movie with 2 of my favorite actors doing verbal sparring for 86 minutes is easily 10/10. If you can, view it with subtitles so you don't miss any of it. So funny and believe it or not it is a feel good film. There will never be a time when this wont be a great date movie for folks over 15. SEE IT!
Siberia (2018)
I really hate a movie critic
Because my opinion is what matters to me. Siberia is a jewel of a movie. Very hot. Very moody. Pacing reminded me of Bound. Sexy like Bound too. Reeves looks great. Lot of chemistry with Ularu. Perfect movie to see at home if you can't catch it in a theater with the limited release. I got it on Demand for $7.99. Hoping for some extra features when the blu-ray comes out. Commentary with Reeves and Ularu would be very special. Just throwing it out to the universe...
47 Ronin (2013)
On my movie experience of 47 Ronin
I cannot imagine a better movie to acquaint westerners with this Japanese story that is so key to their culture. I have seen an earlier Japanese version and I failed to connect with its outdated cinematic techniques. With 47 Ronin I really got the feel of bushido and the way of the warrior samurai. These intentions are universal but the 1700's
are not within popular western cultural interests, usually, so bringing in a well known actor (Keanu Reeves) brought focus and believability to the scenes of battle and impossible love. No one pulls off demon fighting and magical elements like Reeves. And no one is better at being repressed, abused, and stigmatized and still coming round to everyone's aid like Reeves does.
He is a hero within an ensemble group of heroes. I enjoyed getting more familiar with the Japanese actors. The female characters were not weaklings. Universal themes of cowardice and deception for personal gain were clear. I felt the movie was very well done from start to finish. I believe they accomplished what they set out to do. Exciting battle scenes and quiet dramatic scenes were well balanced throughout the movie. Exquisite cinematography throughout. Costumes looked authentic to me. Hair and makeup not overdone to make it all the more believable. I loved the minimalist dialogue and some of it has a familiar ring to it. The fantasy elements were second to none. The 3D was an added dimension but I feel this movie will be equally as good in 2D. You cannot see a more culturally enlightening story with more fantasy elements woven within it. I can fully recommend this movie and look forward to having the DVD in the future.
Man of Tai Chi (2013)
How is it possible
that a martial arts movie is not full of melodrama gratuitous violence and/or an unbelievable plot? I had no problem following the storyline even with 2 out of 3 languages I know nothing about (Mandarin & Cantonese). Due to the careful use of dialog I could easily read the subtitles of this tale of a sweet and gifted martial artist (Tiger Chen) who gets sucked into the dark side to financially help his family and his temple. The plot has some interesting twists and a good deal of eastern philosophy about managing chi and the necessity of meditation and use or abuse of power. I recognized the wealthy people as decadent and callus. The female police officer, (Karen Mok) following her instinct to hunt down a killer, was depicted as strong and capable. Qing Ye is the love interest and she has a great line that will make women everywhere smile. I have heard that Reeves allowed no stunt double for Tiger Chen and that adds to the believability. There were some very Matrix like moments. The showy part of the movie is in the fight scenes and there are a lot of them. Martial artists in all their male physicality with a limited amount of blood and gore. The careful use of blood highlights the storyline and does not drown it out especially the final fight that is pretty damn cool with Keanu Reeves as the baddest of the bad guys ever. It is surprising to see him so evil! I will be seeing this movie again. Hoping for a blu-ray DVD with lots of extras. PLEASE. Don't even tell me about any limited release in the US. This movie might attract more than just the usual Kung Fu fans.
The Private Lives of Pippa Lee (2009)
My Film Festival Movie
Saw this movie at the Woodstock Film Festival 2009. I had a good idea what it was about having seen some trailers but I was not prepared for several scenes, one scene with Reeves and Robin Wright that was startlingly erotic and spiritual at the same time. I wont spoil but I will say that this has not been done before in my considerable lifetime experience of movie viewing. Fabulous cast, quirky storyline, and uniquely satisfying ending lead me to recommend this movie to all over 17. It may resonate more strongly with women as it is Rebecca Miller's story and direction but I am hopeful there are enlightened people of either gender that will appreciate the private story of a woman's life.
The Prince of Pennsylvania (1988)
25 years ago now.
It is fun from first moment til last. Reeves is in nearly every scene in all his pre belly scar youthfulness. The story is preposterous but we have seen how he is on board for that over the years. It's LOL funny in some scenes. Well cast. Filmed in the writer/directors hometown in, get this...Pennsylvania. Rupert is smart and adorable and the cinematographers were savvy enough to get plenty of closeups. The love story is what dreams are made of as well as the intimate moments, one in particular that involves an erotic, in the moment, and sensually sloppy kiss. Over all it was a wonderful way to tell a story about small town issues, the 80's, teenaged angst, and intimacy problems. Of course, and it is right and good, that Rupert/Keanu solves all the personal problems in the end. I am seeing a lot of Henry's Crime here but that's just me. It made no sense that Bonnie Bedelia & Amy Madigan were nominated for Indie Spirit awards and Keanu was not, as it was clearly his movie. I will say no more. Make every effort to see it. Enjoy the wayback machine for 87 minutes.
Generation Um... (2012)
Edgy NYC indie flick
I can believe that this movie wont be released at your local multiplex but it is an interesting account of 24 hours in the life of sex workers in NYC. Not an X rated movie by any stretch but more of a personal exploration of people that wind up in this situation and how their day goes. There are some edgy scenes of a sexual nature and when that includes one with Keanu Reeves that is a real attention getter. He is so achingly damaged and sweet in this role. Through his curiosity, and his sincerity, and his stolen movie camera, he is able to reveal some of himself and be a real friend for the 2 young women sex workers, without judging them. Not a feel good film. More about gritty pathos on the seamy side of NYC. The extras and commentary are not to be missed. Reeves more revealing than usual. I really dug it.
Side by Side (2012)
Must see doc for movie lovers
I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity of viewing Side By Side at Tribeca Film Festival 2012. The theater was packed on a Friday afternoon. There was so much movie making royalty in this documentary I wont even drop any names excepting for Keanu Reeves' who is the interviewer and who's most often the voice over narrator for lots of technical information on transitioning from film to digital. Somehow he made the technical journey understandable and enjoyable and without judgment about which is better. I am betting this documentary will be a staple in film schools. The clips of the movies alone make it hard to take your eyes off the screen lest you miss something. I look forward to having it on DVD. And just for the record, I want a lot of extras like deleted scenes and out takes. :)
Little Buddha (1993)
Wonderful Family Viewing!
I have been viewing this movie on DVD for 7 years now and I still find it uplifting and enlightening. The story/myth Bertolucci & the script writers wrote mixed the old and the new very effectively. The movie is visually exquisite as is the sound track and score. It is rare to get so much spiritual and philosophical information in a Hollywood movie. I recommend Little Buddha for anyone who is interested in cultural ideas and spirituality. A wonderful family movie. Keanu Reeves makes it a draw and to see him in such a historical role makes it all the more watchable for everyone, not just those interested in Buddhism, Bertolucci, or Keanu Reeves. :)
Henry's Crime (2010)
Keanu's caper escapade.
I viewed this movie in NYC in a cool venue called the Landmark Sunshine Theater. Knowing of Reeves movies over the years I was interested to see what he had cooked up for his first producing gig. I had a good idea what the movie was about having seen the trailers and the promo junkets. They were honest and accurately portrayed the movie's intention and scope. This is a small story that is sweet and fun to watch. A movie for grown ups without undo violence and without special effects. A movie that will translate well to the smaller screen in case you miss it at the theater. And a good TV movie, once the swearing is bleeped. The cast are highly recognizable and experienced actors. The scene at Niagara Falls is charming and destined to be classic. The love story between Henry (Reeves)and Julie (Farmiga) is wonderfully enjoyable in it's quirkiness. Opposites attraction works very well in this romance. They managed to skirt some stereotypes which is always refreshing and a good direction to go with in movie making.
How can you NOT like a movie where everyone gets what, they believe, they need in the end? I am most interested in owning this one on blu-ray.
Constantine (2005)
My Constantine experience
Now that I'm 6 years into loving this movie I have to share. Clearly a flick that needs more than the one viewing at the theater. Owning this DVD gives you the opportunity to view the details. The visuals are amazing, dark, and spooky. The storyline is complex enough to encourage thinking after the movie is over. Constantine is an effective live action translation from the comic book series called Hellblazer. Keanu and Rachel have such a sweet chemistry but there is also a wonderful, sometimes intense, dynamic energy with Reeves and the secondary cast members who are brilliant. Shia is a perfect young sidekick against the intensity of Constantine. Peter Stormare portrays a very surprising Lucifer. The casting is totally brilliant. Tilda is the archangel Gabriel in a way that has never been done before. I have heard that there is a homoerotic vibe to this movie but it surely has a hetero-erotic vibe too. As always its about the viewer more than anything. Youtubers have had a field day using the imagery from this movie for their vids. I recommend to anyone, over 13, who enjoys the horror/demonic genre. Don't forget to watch it past the credits and view the extras for some treats that were lost in editing. The blu-ray edition has even more information about the filming and there is a remarkable crispness. If you have a choice, get it on blu-ray.
The Lake House (2006)
Do you believe in magic?
Geez I love this movie! Very different. Edgy in a PG kind of way. Tweaked my heartstrings when I did not expect it. I hate to divulge too much & spoil it for those who have not seen it yet but... yes there is a time travel aspect that you need to be on board for if you're gonna enjoy this flight of a love story/fantasy. You may also need to actually have made some lifelong choices & experienced some life, loss, and love, to connect to it. I totally understand why these major movie stars picked this script when they surely have a pile to pick from. BTW Christopher Plummer has a small role but his speech about architecture was very moving. One other thing...if that dancing/kiss scene doesn't get to you...my most sincere regrets to you and your loved one.
