Yesterday (2004)
Thoughtful and Haunting
I was struck by the simplicity and beauty of the film. It also showed the stark poverty of the people. At the same time, it show how rich the relationship was between Yesterday, her daughter Beauty and the teacher. The HIV virus was portrayed with realism and the film portrayed the main character's strength and dignity in the face of discovering her illness and the fact that her husband gave it to her. She also had the dignity and strength to take care of him to his death while caring for her daughter, dealing with her illness and beating back the prejudices and fears of other villagers. It was thoughtful and haunting and made me feel her pain and sorrow. It was excellent.
Flightplan (2005)
Flightplan soars above the rest
I found this movie spellbinding . Of course, I am a Jodie Foster fan. It was relevant to the times especially since 9-11 as it shows that the seemingly improbable can happen (remember the planes hitting the twin towers on 9-11) and that those with power and credentials and cunning can do the seemingly impossible. The gentlemen, the air Marshal, in the movie had all and used them to create a scenario where he could receive money, his freedom and be blameless (by making Jodie Foster's character the fall girl). Some may have thought the scenes incredulous but how incredulous and other worldly did the 9-11 scenes (Especially when the tower collapsed) seem. It also broad casted loud and clear in a metaphoric sense the suspicion of and quick to condemn air that many harbor towards the Arabs of the world. It was fast paced yet at the same time the drama and terror of the main character dragged on.It should not be considered incredulous since in the past persons have brought on board planes all sorts of contraband and now the airline industry may allow on board many sharp implements. I was captured intensely the whole time. It is well put together and worth the time. You forget that Jodie Foster and Jodie Foster as BECOMES her character.
