Overly long but good
24 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Kept me just intrigued enough to keep watching, but many times I wanted to drop it. Could've benefited from shorter episode runtimes. Many episodes are dragging, and the gaslighting bits with Melody in the apartment are repetitive and frustrating. The tech and time travelly twists, e.g. Melody and Dan talking through the TV, Beatriz quoting back their conversation, etc., were pretty cool. I think this could have been employed even more creatively, as opposed to blaming everything on mold again. Also, I am unconvinced that the Samuel guy is a good actor.

Fun! Light horror fans should give this a go.
10 March 2014
This movie is a hell of a lot of fun. That's really all there is to it.

Having said that, it isn't without its faults. There will be things you don't understand, characters that aren't fleshed out, side stories that are seemingly pointless and don't really push the plot forward, etc. But really, did you expect that much from torture porn? But perhaps fans of the genre might find The Loved Ones a little unsatisfying, as some gore bits aren't as cringe-inducing as they could've been.

However, I was pleasantly surprised. The build up was a little boring, but by the end, man was my heart pumping. I was rooting for the main guy so hard! This is definitely a popcorn flick that doesn't require a lot of critical thinking. The characters are... charming, actors are great, the story unique, execution very nice, and the production design is also surprisingly aesthetically-pleasing. I think horror fans should definitely give this movie a go.

Noroi (2005)

Slow build up, but very worth it!
21 December 2012
I just watched this the other day for the second time, and it was just as terrifying the second time around. Noroi is definitely a film for those who like slow build ups with strong and disturbing endings. It's very immersive, and the entire mythos built around Kagutaba is believable, and feels very real. The documentary type-style makes the viewer more involved in piecing together the mystery, as if it's a Yeti documentary, and you're a fellow Yeti-hunter. With the slow build up, the pieced-together mediums (newspaper clippings, variety show clips, etc.) help to catch your attention, and Noroi never slips. You're constantly thinking, "what the F" and never bored by the movie. It definitely helps that the main researcher never looks confident or like he knows all there is to know about the paranormal, a la Grave Encounters. He looks just as freaked out as you are.

Definitely give this one a go. It's rather long, but in my opinion, very worth it. It'a a breath of fresh air from movies like Rec (not that it's a bad movie, it's just very stressing) or Bunshinsaba.
