Red Election (2021)
Am loving this series
I'm only on ep 8 and am looking to try to buy it so I can finish it NOW. But no luck in finding it. It's compelling, and complicated, and everyone is lying it seems. I love Stephen Dillane in anything so I'm totally amazed. He gourmet cooks, plays Gregorian chant, and lauds his low-key very powerful command, at times quite menacing. Is he a triple agent himself? The Brits are always ahead of the Yanks in espionage shows and all the issues are relevant. I don't understand the low rating scores, not one bit, but isn't that the point in today's world? We all don't understand anything. The one perp's comment that Russia doesn't play by the rules but you (the UK) does and that is why you'll lose? Hello. Could that be more accurate in today's America? I recommend this series and hope for a second season. I like the casting too and the Danish intel involvement, the flashbacks, the technology, the ferocious pace, the suspense, the human frailty, horrendous outcomes, and devastating heartbreak. I can't imagine what's coming. P.s. Keep your lipstick containers clean and close.
Becoming Elizabeth (2022)
Episode 1
The emphasis on love affairs is nice. I'm impressed with the first episode. Candle lighting, costuming, sets, art direction, and high dramatic stakes with a naive young Elizabeth. I like the casting. If this continues, my rating will likely be an 8.
The Private Life of a Modern Woman (2017)
Ahead of its time.
A film for post-covid times...this film makes sense to me in 2022. The grilling James Toback gives the lovely and talented Sienna Miller is spot-on, and she listens and answers while picturing recent events in real time. We all do that all the time. Her mind is racing and jumbled from stress and anxiety, not unlike the Bosch painting on the wall. Music by Shostakovich, Brahms and Bach apparently throws some viewers off but not this viewer. Alex Baldwin does well, and he gives her a short, sharp shock despite the very brief appearance in the film. The low reviews on this site are not indicative of the quality of this film, despite the little errors here and there. Charles Grodin does a remarkable, noteworthy display of dementia. I'd recommend this film to educated viewers.
Vikings: Valhalla (2022)
Respectable Season - More Please!
If one sign of a successful TV program/series is that one scurries to the history books, well, this season is indeed worthy. I just binged it and am thrilled. Once again, "religion" finds its way into a society/culture, and begins its insidious infiltration only to result in suspicion, distrust, deceit, treachery, hatred, and murder...call it annihilation. But, of course, "GOD WILLS IT." I thought this season was terrific. The story of Queen Emma is important. All of the individuals are important, whether real or fictional. Have patience, give it some time, review the history, and watch it again. Nice use of flashbacks for characters...I wanted more history. Godwin's story is particularly important, especially because he's played by the Duke of Clarence from The White Queen. ✊🏻✊🏻 I highly recommend.
Condor (2018)
Wonderful espionage series.
Highly recommended! Excellent actors, especially William Hurt. Need a new career? Assassins wanted. Active Measures? They're ongoing. Grab your vodka.
Mayor of Kingstown (2021)
Terrific program
The mini-history lessons alone are worth your while. They sent me researching after each episode. Then there's the education about the Department of Corrections, the prisons, the gangs, the deals, etc. Lordy! Don't miss this program!
McMafia (2018)
Should be required viewing.
Read the book too! We all need to understand the origin and the mechanics of transnational crime syndicates, especially when they pose as an American Administration (reference 2016-2020). One can listen to the Gaslit podcast for additional information. James Norton is superb in everything he does, especially "Mr. Jones." #McMafia.
The Green Knight (2021)
The Green Knight
Superb. Contemplative, deliberate, slow pacing makes for a fascinating time in the theater. I will buy this film just as soon as I can, but will likely see the film again, perhaps tonight. (I needed subtitles so I missed some dialogue.) The art, art design, set decoration, landscapes, the endless pursuit of "honor," the crown design itself, are enough. The actors are worthy: Sean Harris in a dramatic lead finally! Dev Patel has a LONG AND WONDERFUL CAREER ahead of him. Alicia Vikander can do no wrong, but of course. (I see her as our new Olivia de Havilland.) Kate Dickie was marvelous as the Queen. The red Fox was so sweet. The end climax shot was magnificently done. W. O. W. Just W. O. W. Calling all literary artistic types...heads up.
I Care a Lot (2020)
Ignore the ridiculous low ratings
This film is a scream, especially given the corrupt, disastrous recent Administration in the USofA. This group of ne'er-do-wells would have been guaranteed a place in that Cabinet. If you appreciate dark humor, you will love it. Hopefully, at least, it will end the urge for TV anchors to wear that axed bob hairdo! The actors are excellent. There is some serious food for thought here too. It's called "overpopulation" and "karma," which is best served cold. This will likely become a treasured cult film, IMHO. Don't miss it.
Storm Over Europe (2016)
Fascinating history of the Germanic tribes
This is well done and connects a lot of dots for me. The digital recreation of faces over the skulls that have been found in each area adds a whole new dimension. I recommend this series!
Wild Sri Lanka (2015)
Absolutely gorgeous
Don't miss this stunning program. The land, flora and fauna, its history...simply amazing. Of all the Wild programs, which I follow, this one knocked me over.
Grant (2020)
Worthwhile and important history
This is the perfect program for now. Imagine today's flailing West Pointe graduates (pantywaists) in DC living up to Lincoln, Grant or Lee standards. What a joke. Now I can rewatch the FRONTLINE programs on all three heroes plus a couple of other great films. Too many commercials everywhere, yes, but don't miss this program. More please, History Channel! Thank you. 🙏🏻
