Perry Mason: The Case of the Jaded Joker (1959)
Funniest Scene
OK, first, the 30 seconds they save time compressing the open and credits on the Hallmark Channel is lame, but I get it. Showing it once and a while wont bounce the check for the electric.
Spoiler Below:
This is one of the better ones that must have been pushed through while the Standards and Practices people were busy.
The funniest scene is Tragg and Buzzie at the piano. I rewound it a few times and laughed every time. Open use of weed on TV in 1959, as Buzzie would say, "Man, this is the wildest". Buzzie is funny as heck i the courtroom. Also, catch Raymond Burr breaking up at the end and Bobby Troup getting screen cred for the "Jaded Joker Theme".
The legal parts are pretty good, dropping in "contra-coup injuries" had me back in evidence class.
The Paper (1994)
Excellent Slice of NYC Life
The cast is first rate, the story engaging and it doesn't drag that much. It almost knows when to give you a break to catch up.
Without repaving covered ground. it is a great movie to pop in and enjoy. Only a few characters are one dimensional. Howard and the writers give almost every character some depth.
The subplots are given just enough space, most are resolved, but they get you to the end without being too disappointed when a couple are not.. This movie felt that it could be staged for a sequel, but it stands on its own nicely.
I like any movie that gets the mythology right. This movie does, right from the start.
Americathon (1979)
Funny and Scary Realistic(Plot Review)
It is a bit lame and unbelievable in spots. But, like another gem, Idiocracy, hits home on many points.
The lack of oil, growing debt and generally unstable, yet bizarre, world make for an entertaining look at our Dystopic future. A good companion piece is "The Eighties, A look back", written with great sarcasm in 1979 by Tony Hendra and contributors as wide ranging from Jeff Greenfield and Valerie Curtain to Abbie Hoffman and Harry Shearer.
The movie drags in spots, but gems pop out, from "Both Mother and Father" to the acerbic narration of George Carlin. Add a Beach Boys theme and a pretty tight ending, it's a solid entertainment value. Plus, like Idiocracy, you will point to the TV and recognize things that are happening now.
The Blizzard of AAHHH's (1988)
A Classic, Grab IT!
This is a classic ski movie. If you don't want to bust out of the house and head for a mountain after this movie, you have no pulse. It was extreme and hardcore before soda companies and video game makers made it "cool". It also shows the skill of Glen Plake. With a slick soundtrack and great angles, it works. The shots on Chamonix are probably some of the best in the ski movie genre. From the shootout to the finale, this is the classic ski trip. It also shows how things have changed for the better, and the worse in the ski business. It is a snapshot in a time gone by too fast. I especially like the bits interviewing people around the ski areas.
