I really have a fondness for this film. For me it's just a guilty pleasure. I know it has little to nothing to do with the Mario franchise, I know it's objectively a botched movie, it's also majorly flawed in terms of content, and I know it's a very strange mix of Humor and drama has transitions that are far too difficult.
But I think these little flaws are exactly why I enjoy watching this film. Because I just find it entertaining and can enjoy the good, the bad and the ugly things.
And yes, there are good things as well, it's action-packed, it's very creative. The city looks really unique, I see the influence of Mad Max and Blade Runner, but it is still recognizable as a city in its own right. There are also some very good worldbuilding elements. For example, all cars are electric because there are no fossil fuels in this world, King Cooper has this attitude because it comes from the Trex... And I take my hat off to the brilliant idea of making the two stupid henchmen smarter. In every film, the henchmen are Laurel and Hardy like. This is funny for the viewer, but counterproductive for the evil regime.
And that's a clever idea. That they are made smarter so that they don't mess up anymore. But once the henchmen are smart, they have betrayed the bad guy and turned to a good guy.
This is a very great reversal of that formula and also a great message for such a silly children's film.
But despite all the nostalgia, love and praise, I can't ignore the bad things, like the fact that the Goomba are uglier than Resident Evil Zombie, they gave some actors a colorful T-shirt and then said, this is character XY, Which conspiracy theory regarding dinosaurs and parallel dimensions does not appear in this film?
The film is very detailed and has a lot of Easter eggs, but a lot of details don't make a film and a lot of grimaces don't make a character.
The movie has a lot of Easter eggs from the Mario franchise, but it's like plastering myself with Italian symbols and flags and then claiming I'm Italian, there are a lot of push up breasts and deep cleavage in this film, you can at least hear swear words in the German dub and it has a weird, dirty undertone the whole time, like all the Dan Schneider sitcoms.
What triggers me personally is that me and Luigi wear their costumes too little and too late in the film.
Nevertheless, this film always strikes me as being in perfect balance.
The movie isn't good, but I can't be mad at you.
