. . . about the third vignette, Cannon Fodder
31 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The third vignette, Cannon Fodder, is a futuristic steampunk anime about a polluted city in a massive line of defenses drawn as a re-imagined Maginot Line, a line of fortified defenses named after the French Minister of War André Maginot in the 1930s. The landscape is a bleak, barren crater covered desert. A school age boy is fascinated by gun 17, the part of the line where his family lives. The father, mother and son live in a steampunk flat several levels above train station 17. The city has some interesting portrayals of lifts and stairwells landing at a cobblestoned street level with sewer covers and train tracks. The checkered floors and dining room cabinets of the flat are drawn in French style amid an interior of gutted steam machinery and a gunner's port. The signs inside the giant gun 17 dome, where the father works as a party laborer, refer to all the gigantic shells as containing poison gas. The enemy city is unseen and the plot derives itself from one massive solitary firing of Gun 17, presumably at the enemy city and the days long interlude of cleaning and maintaining the massive turret between the next scheduled firing.
