Arif V 216 (2018)
Didn't meet the standards set by Cem Yilmaz.
First of all, I'm a big fan of Cem Yilmaz and his movies. I still watch his movies at least once a year. That being said, while not being completely bad, this movie didn't meet the standards of Cem Yilmaz movies. He set the bar really high and sometimes it's not easy to reach there, even for himself.
Nostalgia factor played a big role in this new adventure of our beloved "Arif Isik", a character first introduced in G.O.R.A. Cem Yilmaz obviously loves nostalgia, and the great actors and actresses of 60's, 70's era just like most Turkish people, but the dose of it in this movie was way too much. I mean, the setting, background, costumes, characters were really great but that "These people were giants of the Turkish cinema, so they should not be made fun of" attitude was kind of boring, especially considering that this is a comedy movie. Especially the tirade at the end of the movie was really lame.
You should be familiar with the history of Turkish cinema in order to be able to enjoy this movie. There are just way too many references to that 60's, 70's era for anyone to even laugh at the jokes. So, don't bother watching the movie if you don't know who people like Zeki Müren, Sadri Alisik, Ajda Pekkan are.
Life (2017)
Good but could've been better
I hadn't even heard about this movie until my girlfriend made me watch its trailer just a few days ago before it came to theaters in Turkey. After watching the trailer, we decided to take our chance.
Along with many positive things about the movie, such as its atmosphere, consistency, "Calvin" and so on, I kept thinking like "Yeah, it's good but could've been better" many times during the movie. Its music, tension and rhythm and casting could've been better, but the movie is still good enough to watch at a movie theater. The director tries to add some depth to the characters, but it somewhat fails, too, due to its not-so-long running time probably.
In conclusion, if you are into sci-fi movies, you should totally give it a chance. The director is rather young for a director and the movie at least doesn't have any logical flaws or inconsistencies like most of sci-fi movies.
Aldnoah.Zero (2014)
A Disappointing Ending After Such A Wonderful Start
Even though I can't claim that I've watched many Mechas, I'm a big fan of Mecha genre because of my love for sci-fi and robots. Knowing the fact that most of the Mechas having trouble with their scripts, I try to choose ones that have something to tell (e.g Code Geass, Neon Genesis Evangelion etc), not the ones just showing big robots with great action. The first season was great, actually, I hoped it'd be something like Code Geass, which is one of my favorite Anime. But then, came the disappointment. The start of the second season wasn't bad but as the Anime got closer to its finale, things really got out of hand. It had the material enough for at least 30-40 episodes but instead, it ended in a really unsatisfying way. But I still think it was worth watching despite all the flaws, and I have to say that the music (especially the first season ending song "aLIEz") was pretty good.
