Scream (2022)
Predictable, but Entertaining
My thoughts:
- can we please STOP with the empty hospital trope
- Enjoyed the opening (felt very scream in tone). I appreciated the subversion of our expectations and Not killing the victim in the opening scene.
- Roger Jackson killed it, like always (pun intended)
- Tara (jenna) GREAT acting and most interesting new character
- Sam (melissa) was mostly not believable in her acting, disappointingly so as I thought she was great in "In the Heights"
- Not enough sidney prescott badassery
- How are you going to reveal to us that sidney finally moved past her trauma/trust issues and is happy with a family and kids and NOT show us this happy family/kids??
- Dewey felt the least Dewey that Dewey has ever felt
- I knew one of the big 3 would die but why did Dewey have to be killed in a way that makes him look stupid??
- LOVED the meta "requel" monologue
- Loved the multiple humorous fake-outs prior to dylan minnettes death scene
- While i enjoyed seeing kyle gallner.. his character could have been deleted and the movie would have been no worse for it. He was a wasted opportunity.
- While killer reveal was acceptable.. it was predictable and the least shocking reveal of the series with the weakest motivation.. again, a missed opportunity
- The villains felt like they were trying to be caricatures of billy and stu and i could not tell if that was intentional or poor acting
- I appreciated all of the references to former screams, as well as other major horror films, but it does not do enough for me to make up for its flaws
- I have mixed feelings about the way they involved skeet ulrich.. I enjoyed seeing him as billy again but after awhile it started feeling a bit gimmicky
- Gale and sidney felt like outsiders and weren't really actively pivotal to the plot
- Hey james and chelsea!!
- Gore factor was greater with this film (see taras tibia fx and deweys death) which in my opinion is a plus
- However, even with the greater brutality somehow there were so many survivors?
- Wish we got a return of kirby, but ecstatic we got an easter egg that showed she survived the events of Scream 4
- Although gale overall felt stale to me in this film, I love that her last line is indicating that for once she'll write a book on a good man's life, rather than the tragedy of a group of people's deaths
- Overall, the filmmakers didn't do anything groundbreaking, but they also didn't disrespect the original which was the main thing I needed to enjoy the film. It was entertaining, took itself a little too seriously, but made the standard commentary on horror cinema we have come to know and love from the scream franchise
Scream 5 rating: 5.75/10
My franchise ranking from best to worst (I enjoy them all): 1. Scream (1996) 2. Scream 4 (2011) 3. Scream 2 (1997) 4. Scream 3 (2000) 5. Scream 5 (2022)
Ma (2019)
One of the Worst Movies I Have Seen In Awhile...
So bad that I felt the need to write a review about it to prevent people from making the mistake of watching it. I had the lowest of expectations and even still, it was laughably bad.
The very FEW positives: Octavia Spencer did a good job at being creepy. Diana Silvers, an up and coming actress, did alright in her role. There is a pretty funny exchange between Ma and an old lady in a nail salon.
That's literally it people.
This movie has plot holes galore and presents IDIOTIC characters. I know highschoolers are a little naive and succumb to peer pressure often, but the notion that they would be so stupid as to return to a stranger's house who has stalked, threatened, and stole their personal items repeatedly just to drink and party?? Are you serious? No normal person is that dense. The only teenagers that seem to catch on to Ma's strange behavior is the girl characters, and they take way too long to do so. Apparently, highschool boys are even worse than idiots. Only motivated by sex and booze. Also, no one has the common sense to call police in this movie.
I will leave out spoilers, but truly this movie will have you baffled at the ridiculous reasonings and decisions.
Even more disappointing is when you find out this was directed by the same man who directed and wrote the screenplay for "The Help". Come on Tate Taylor, you can do way better than this.
