Cold in July (2014)
Shortchanged
The movie is beautifully shot. Michael C. Hall does well as the lead. Right from the offset you're gripped because the scenes are very intense. Things are progressing quickly and it's doing a damn fine job as a thriller... then boom! Suddenly, just like how I'm ending this paragraph, it all comes to a halt.
I'll just get to the point. As you reach the halfway stage you learn of a few twists. It's setup nicely for the rest of the film. However, as soon as the Jim Bob (played by Don Johnson) character is introduced, this movie loses it's brain. The first scene he appears in isn't in line with anything that has preceded his big intro. From then on it just feels like you're watching another film altogether. The main character isn't the focus anymore but for some unknown reason he tags along and you're left wondering what compels him to do so. It's disappointing. I still saw it through but I can't ever remember a movie making me feel so shortchanged. Movies with very bad endings have some sort of closure. Even if this movie gave you a hint of a possible outcome but no. Nothing.
