Black Snake Moan (2006)
surprising movie with a good message
Working at a movie theater as a projectionist, I have the opportunity to watch basically every movie that comes out. When I first saw the trailer for 'Black Snake Moan' I laughed and thought, "Great. Another 'Snakes on a Plane' Samuel L Jackson movie". But of course, I wanted to see it for the laugh factor. Many people have judged this movie too quickly based on the innuendo in the title, the images on promotional ads and on the fact that Justin Timberlake is in the film. Personally I loved every second of this movie. It tells the story of an older man and young woman who are both going through rough times and are able to reach out to one another. The story is truly touching and sends out a great message about life and how we live. Of course, I do not recommend it for young audiences due to some graphic material, but if you are looking for a great story and genuine acting from Sam Jackson, Christina Ricci and, yes, even Justin Timberlake, I encourage you to see 'Black Snake Moan'.
Hollywoodland (2006)
Adrien Brody - star of this film
I went into Hollywoodland with fairly low expectations. I was surprised by how it turned out to be an OK film, not because of story line, but due to the outstanding performance of Adrien Brody. Yes, he has done it again, stunning me with the raw emotion put into his character. While Afleck did a decent job of portraying George Reeves, I found myself sitting through his scenes wanting to know what Louis Simo (Brody's character) was going to do next. He portrays a believable character of a struggling PI and father to a son he isn't able to see often. The whole story of this broken family intrigued me as much as, if not more than, the investigation of George Reeves' death. Overall, I would say that this was a good movie, not a "must see", but good enough to watch if you are looking for something to watch.
The Da Vinci Code (2006)
Good movie, although it is rather long
I watched this movie without any expectations, good or bad, and came out thinking it was a good movie. The movie keeps you interested by feeding you bits and pieces of the story at a time. Hanks does a good job, as usual, but Paul Betany stole the show in my opinion. He portrays his character with such raw emotion, viewers can't help but feel sympathy for Silas, "the ghost". The filming was also done very well, the viewing into the past was magnificently done. My one complaint with this movie is that the ending ran a little long, causing most of us to grow fidgety and wonder where Ron Howard is leading us, only to discover that it was just a long ending. Overall, I would have to say that this movie was a success, despite what critics may say.
