Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)
A very satisfying summer blockbuster
The movie is everything you could expect from a sequel, popcorn, sci-fi film. I will say that this one of those rare gems of a sequel that is just as good as the first. The lens flare is still there but still... Even for the non-Trekkie this movie is very enjoyable. Fantastic performances all around. Great direction from JJ Abrams. And Great cinematography, the beginning scene is one of the most beautifully shot scenes I've seen all year.
I was a fan of the film but it is not necessarily a film I will be left thinking about much after I have left the theater or a film that I will highly recommend. I will however recommend it for a hot summer night when you have ten dollars and nothing to do.
Star Trek Into Darkness is the definition of a summer blockbuster.
Spring Breakers (2012)
Mainstream Harmony Korine
First off I will praise Mr. Korine for his fantastic choice in casting. If this movie had featured stars who were not previous Disney stars then the movie would have almost no appeal. The fact that we now see former, and current, Disney stars acting like wild, crazy college girls with guns is enticing to say the least. Other than that the story lacks just that, story.
Pretty much exactly what I would expect from a "Mainstream" Harmony Korine film. Not much going on in the film. Very dragged out. Painfully slow. Only thing really saving this one is James Franco's fantastic performance.
Melancholia (2011)
The end of the world never seemed to unimportant
A gripping drama about a melancholic newlywed made all the more enticing when it becomes clear that all of mankind is surely doomed.
Director Lars Von Trier has really captured something here, he has made the end of the human existence seem not so important. In the first half of the movie it is evident that the world will soon be impaled by a rogue planet but this seems to be only a minor problem when it comes to the after-wedding endeavors of a melancholic newlywed. It seems she has many problems to deal with herself. The second half of the movie is when the bride becomes indifferent to her problems and the true problem, the end of the world, becomes all the more evident.
The Great Gatsby (2013)
An impossible movie
It is now apparent that F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel The Great Gatsby does not translate well to the big screen. The acting was perfectly fine but the story, as classic as it may be, can simply not be made into a decent major motion picture. I will say that Leonardo DiCaprio seems to be the actor born to play Gatsby. Even though this is true it still does not make the movie a necessary film to have to be made. This may be the case with many classic novels going to the big screen. Some are done beautifully, but Gatsby is a case that has been attempted many times and every time seems to fall short of capturing the novel's classic allure.
To the Wonder (2012)
Tree of Life on a smaller scale
You can approach this movie in several ways, but if you go in with an appreciation of Terrence Malick's latest works, you will enjoy this movie.
Affleck, Kurylenko, McAdams, and Bardem all give first rate performances. Malick has certainly found his niche, as evidently seen in To The Wonder and his previous film Tree of Life. To The Wonder can be compared to Tree of Life, both are shot very similarly and both have the same sense of existentialism. To The Wonder is simply Tree of Life on a much smaller scale. Tree of Life can be seen as being about life and everything to do with life whereas To The Wonder, in it's essence, is about a relationship between two people.
