Worth the wait.
16 November 2013
Before reviewing I read a 'spoiler': "warning contains Jeff Goldblum" now that in itself was unfair but humour in all things is to be enjoyed but Mr Goldblum actually made the wait worthwhile. The wait? Well 93 minutes run time and about 25 before that I was wondering why? I wasn't suffering from itchy bum, I had been enjoying the acting, lighting, ambiance, feel or whatever but why? Then Mr G came on the screen and in as much as the early warning was unfair many could have played the role but his character put the previous 60 minutes or so into perspective and it made the whole worthwhile. I was entertained and I'm glad I watched. Just one proviso if you are over 55 and you've been married for over 25 years you might look for too many parallels but try not to. A pleasant film worth the wait, aka 'build-up'.

The alien 'child' bursts from a stomach again. Need more?

A friend is hoping soon to be asked to point a camera on a new Ridley Scott movie. I hope to convince them to turn the lens on Scott and get him to take a good hard look into himself. After ten minutes, no I'm being generous it wasn't that long, I knew that this film would be awful. When the crew of the good 'ship'(2093 space explorer)awake from their induced hibernation, immediately one of the drowsy travellers in the style of a gnarled gold panner with an 'overnight shadow' that the others have managed to avoid, launches into a stereotypical tirade reminiscent of class wars which surely should have been eradicated a long time before launch. Even more sure however is that such disparate characters would never have been selected to embark together. OK the special effects are good but when you have 130 million to play with why not but I reckon you could give 130 quid to a local am-dram troupe and get much better value for many.

From ten minutes in, I was rigid with tension.

Regretfully the stoic conservative in me cannot give this film a '10'. Regret because I believe it deserves it, I might then slide the mouse back up and give it a nine but ten is reserved for films with strong regard to continuity, historical accuracy, great acting, cinema-photography, pathos, excitement, exhilaration, script, soundtrack et al. What was missing then? Certainly not excitement and exhilaration blended with much tension. The historical accuracy is probably OK and I ignored the usual American made movie seeming total disregard to continuity. All that doesn't matter because most importantly I was entertained. Fabulous value for money, thank you for that and well done.

Left me numb and wondering why?
16 November 2013
When one has enjoyed such a wonderful film as "Paris Manahattan" in which Mr Allen performs a wonderful self-effacing cameo one knows that he cannot be at all bad as a human being. Of course we know he is a great comic, comic actor and film maker but we never really know about the person. Allowing himself to be sent-up and set-up by other film makers shows a human quality to be admired. When however one is subjected to 98 minutes of good quality acting, great professional film making and all the usual nuance that is expected from a master of the genre, one is left asking: "why did he make that film?" Just as I did. I would love to know why? I wasn't shocked or provoked or moved. Overall I was simply not entertained. I was left numbed and wondering why such a capable human being made such a film. Who or what was it for?

How do people find funding to make films like this?
16 November 2013
It is oft said that we are all only as good as our last mess up. Morgan Freeman I thought had integrity, his voice lends gravitas to any situation and of course it did in this but why did he lend his persona to it. Does he really have to do it? I don't believe that there can be enough films left to be made that he could perform in that would forgive his judgement in being involved with this nonsense. It really does put 'disaster' into disaster movies and yet it wasn't intended to be, tired old story line totally unbelievable plot with all the usual clichés which in many movies can be great fun. This was not supposed to be 'fun' neither was it funny. It is simply terrible. With all the poor people in the World let alone the poor in the USA how is money found to make rubbish like this? What ever happened to film making? What ever happened to integrity and pride?

Delightful happy film, cheered me.

I rarely watch films on planes apart from the small screen, I hate the ridiculous censors applied particularly by aircraft operated from Muslim countries. Anyway it was a long flight, I knew nothing of the film, the title I think I'd heard of, it was reminiscent of course of "Paris, Texas" so I was intrigued. A romantic comedy nice and easy. It was delightful, I was unsure whether it was a 'Woody Allen' film or not but when I discovered that it wasn't it made it even more wonderful that he appeared, little more than a cameo but perfect. I cried with joy, very sweet, light hearted and fun. If you don't enjoy it perhaps you have a wooden heart?

Joyous, watch it, love it.

Reluctantly watched this on the small screen of an aircraft and suffered the irritating interruptions from aircrew. I'm no film buff but many that consider themselves to be will watch this and complain that Hopkins didn't get Hitch right or that the prosthetic make-up was wrong or whatever. Worth watching and forgetting that you think you know the history of the main character but you'd have to know to some degree to enjoy the last line which made me laugh through my tears. Made even more wonderful by Helen Mirren who portrayed a devoted wife, which made me realise how lucky I am with my own but then she is having an affair! I got that wrong too, total belief in her Svengali. I'll watch it again and next time not on the wretched aircraft screen.
