Torpedo Alley (1952)
Great training film for the 1950's submarine service
Mark Stevens, Dorothy Malone, James Millican, Douglas Kennedy and Bill Williams star in this action-oriented sea yarn from the 1950's. It is a tale of Mark Stevens as a Navy Pilot that is lost at sea. He is rescued by a submarine and he has guilt because he lost his crew in the crash. After he leaves the Navy after WWII he tries his hand at civilian work but has no real interest, He joins the Navy again just before the Korean War and goes to submarine school because he is too old for combat flying and does not want to be an flight instructor. He has met and fell in love with pretty Navy nurse who lives with her father a Navy Warrant Officer at New London where he is attending submarine school. Typical love lost, love won story that really takes away from the story of the submarine service and the gallant men who served during the Second World War and Korea. The scenes at the sub base at New London bring back memories of a time gone by and of the adventure of the when I was young. I thought it was a very good submarine film with a lot of training information. In 1952 this could have been a great recruiting film for the submarine forces. Today it is history for us old timers to think about relive our youth.
Beachhead (1954)
"Tennis Shoes" instead of Combat Boots
Tony Curtis and Skip Homier both are wearing black with white trim canvas shoes in the scenes just before and after the swimming pond and the tank being blown up. Must have been too hard on the young stars feet.If the real Marines had been on the mission they would have been wearing boots. IN the first scenes they took off their leggin's just before starting out on their little trip to find the Farmer. When they went to the area where they dug the fox holes Tony and Skip are wearing combat boots, then later when Lovejoy and Curtis run into the Framer and his daughter Tony is wearing the "Tennis Shoes " but hey have been blacken. The movie in about a true story but did they really need the love interest??
The Hitch-Hiker (1953)
More information on a great film co-written and directed by Ida Lupino
A perilous and grim film noir entry--noted as being the only one of the genre ever directed by a woman, Lupino--THE HITCH-HIKER offers three outstanding performances by victims O'Brien and Lovejoy and killer Talman. O'Brien and Lovejoy leave their families to go on a fishing trip and, en route, make the mistake of picking up hitchhiker Talman who suddenly threatens them with a gun and holds them hostage, forcing the two men to drive him through the southwestern desert and into Mexico. He is a wanted killer and intends to get to Baja California and leave by boat to points unknown. Talman has already killed a number of people; he is a sadistic and utterly cunning psychopathic killer. He toys with the men, first offering them opportunities to overwhelm him, then to escape. At every turn, he second-guesses their desperate moves and is waiting for them with a gun. Slowly, his background is revealed to them. He has been an abused child and early learned to hate humanity. Talman has a permanent affliction: an eye which never closes. At a campfire site one night the men try to move in on him but he has been faking sleep and suddenly holds the gun on them, almost killing them both. Near the end of the film one of the hostages leaves his wedding ring on the pump at a Mexican gas station, alerting police who save the pair and capture Talman. Lupino's direction is superb as she slowly builds the tension, cleverly selecting her setup shots in remote desert areas. She was the only woman directing films at the time, and she proved her enormous talent as a writer and a director with this taut little thriller. Talman's role is based upon the real-life exploits of mass murderer William Cook who slaughtered six people in 1950-51 before Mexican police captured him; he was executed in San Quentin's gas chamber on December 12, 1951. The story, taken right out of the headlines, was written by Daniel Mainwaring who had written INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS. He did not receive credit because of his left-leaning politics during the HUAC witch hunts, and because Howard Hughes, then running RKO, refused to give "radicals" any credit for film work.----copy right TV guide listing 11-8-2007
Transformers (2007)
Uniforms are wrong on Cpt. Lennox's team
Spoiler
When the factual error goof is stated "The uniforms worn by Captain Lennox's team members have patches on their right shoulders from the 82nd Airborne "All Americans" Division, indicating they served with the 82nd in combat. The "Airborne" tab has been incorrectly replaced with a "Ranger" tab. The "Ranger" tab is worn above the "Airborne" tab on the left shoulder when deployed with the unit and it is not used on the right shoulder."
Capt. Lennox and his team are in the US Air Force not in the US Army. Why would they be wearing Ranger or Air Borne Tabs at all? If the producers of the movie wanted to have members of the Armed Forces they should have at least read a book or talked to someone who is knowledgeable of what service members wear in they duties.
