Ghost in the Shell (2017)
Overblown, oversimplified and dumbed down
It's really sad when an anime of such complexity, such soul should be watered down to oversimplified drivel. Even the visuals are less than impressive as they are just as watered down as the script.
Character development is at a minimal, and worst of all. For a film about the existence of a soul, this film has none.
And I won't even get started on the blatant whitewashing. The controversy is justified. No attempt was made to give it a Japanese aesthetic. Just a slap in the face at the end an gratuitous scenes of Takeshi Kitano who inexplicably speaks Japanese, but everyone can understand him without an established translation device.
This is a science fiction film for people too dumb to understand true science fiction.
Oni-gokko (2011)
Brilliant, atmospheric
Well shot, and well crafted. Proof that the auteur behind "Amateur Porn Star Killer" has a tremendous amount of talent. Here the story is so much more focused and his trademark use of haunting, disturbing imagery is used to its full effect.
While not perfect, no short film is, this demonstrates a unique vision, inspired by but not derivative of Japanese horror films.
Young Justice: Evolution (2019)
Best of the season so far
A stand-alone story of sorts as we examine the history of Vandal Savage. Unlike the comics where Savage must eat his children to survive, here is a new twist on his mythology. As he had lived many lives and sired many children, he has learned not to kill anyone if their lives can serve a useful purpose.
This is true of his daughter Cassandra who on one hand fears her father, but on the other, wants to be a proud part of his legacy. Juxtaposed with the training of three new heroes: Geo-Force, Halo and Forager, this single episode stands apart as a character study of the Immortal Villain.
Well done. And hope there will be more like this.
Reign of the Supermen (2019)
This is a Superman story!
Wish I could have seen this in the theater. Great action sequences. Well written script. Really brought the Reign of the Supermen storyline to life and gave it a cinematic shine.
God Bless America (2011)
Recently fired man who hates stupid celebs and fangirl go on a shooting spree
Preachy at times, and not totally realistic considering they left so many clues behind, but makes an excellent statement.
Now, what I didn't like. Budget considerations meant only a few people could be squibbed. So the shooting death scenes of these asshole analogs were ultimately unsatisfying.
Director Bobcat should have gone full psycho and have these assholes get tortured.
MILD SPOILERS The douchebag who took up two parking spaces, for instance, could have been winged, strapped to the hood of his car while Lolita girl smashes his body to a pulp back and forth into a brick wall. I would have paid good money to see that.
And the Tea Party deserved an on screen death. What they did was too cheap. If it had been a Tarantino film, it would have been a ballet of bullets and blood. I mean, admit it, we all want to see the Tea Partiers publicly decapitated, don't we? But it was also good of them to show the results of their killings, because all it did was make them the villains their victims martyrs. Sad really.
All in all, a thought provoking film.
The Woman (2011)
Absolutely brilliant
I've had the pleasure of working with Ms. Pollyanna McIntosh and hearing great things about this film.
I wasn't disappointed. Her performance as a feral woman (thought oddly devoid of body hair) was haunting and tragic, she is someone who stays with you, whom you see in your dreams at night and you're not sure if she'll bite your finger off.
As a film, the pacing can be slow at times. But when it picks up, it packs quite a punch, sometimes literally. Perhaps we could have developed the father a bit more, and see where he comes from, but his blatant misogyny and the way he passes it on to his children rings very true, and is a painful reminder that not all monsters are mutants or alien beings.
This is the kind of film style that I used to write in, before it got all watered down. It's a film that pulls no punches and shows what resides in every human being, the capacity for violence perpetuated against women and to men in retaliation by women.
