Teoneol (2017)
Outstanding!
I've never watched a Korean production before. But the premise of Tunnel caught my attention, so I gave it a try. It did require reading the captions, as it is not dubbed. But this series is very good. I didn't like Gwang-ho at first. Yeon-suk helped. And once he was a fish out of water, he grew on me. The other characters are very good as well. They have some quirks, some that may be Korean culture & others that are just universally human. Coupled with very good acting makes the characters compelling. The plot is smooth & it's interconnected in some predictable & unpredictable ways. Plus there is interpersonal humor mixed into the drama. It reminds me a lot of American 80s ensemble detective shows. And like those, it's very entertaining.
Ted Lasso (2020)
Ridiculous premise. Magnificent execution.
Every single actor brings depth to their character, while being unique, & not one is cliche. They are all eminently likable, even the spoils. The writing started strong & got better! The little comments from various characters (maybe some adlibbed) are hilarious. The plot is not overly predictable (it could have been completely unpredictable, but I would have stopped watching if the show was cruel to the characters). And the climactic end of season one is refreshingly feel-good, without the story-book fantasy that we're tired of seeing. This is genuinely one of the most enjoyable shows, especially comedy, that I've watched in several years.
>My only quibble would be with Ted's southern accent, which doesn't go with anything they share about his background (people from Kansas or other places mentioned don't have southern accents). Until they explain Ted is from an actual southern state, it'll seem like a gimmick--even as it works as part of his unassuming persona, which is why it doesn't drop my rating.<
