Breathing Room (2008)
I expected more, it delivered less.
While this movie wasn't truly as abysmal as many reviewers have previously stated, it wasn't really a great movie. The overall plot had serious potential, but could have used a bit more development. It was just seriously lacking in some places. I won't even comment about "Saw" or "Cube" rips offs like so many have done. Movies take ideas from other movies every day. How many times has the doomsday scenario been done? Some did it well, some did not.
If you go into this movie with the mindset that it's going to be somewhere along the same lines as "Saw", "Cube", and all the other movies that use this premise, you'll be one step ahead. You must also realize that it isn't going to deliver as well as those movies. The premise is fairly vague and the ending doesn't offer much in the way of closure or even comprehension of what just transpired.
The acting was actually quite good, with minimal exceptions. After seeing it, you'll be able to draw your own conclusions as to whom those exceptions might be.
I wouldn't say run out and rent this movie ASAP, but if you have a chance to watch it (and don't have much else better to do), it should offer a little bit of entertainment. It is your choice.
The Cabin in the Woods (2011)
Truly a masterpiece of the Horror Genre
I gave this film a full 10 stars as it is one of the few that I felt truly deserve such a rating. Far too often we see horror films, where at least one person lives and all is right with the world at the end. The Cabin In The Woods does not do this or at least that is what we are left to believe at the end. We do not know the true outcome, though we are left with an idea from which we draw our own conclusions. The ancient ones apparently rise, but at that point the credits roll. The addition of comedy to this film makes it that much more enjoyable as I found myself laughing at some of the dialogue. This is not because it was so stupid it was funny, but because it was genuinely written to be funny and succeeded at such. The cast performed beautifully and the movie is what I would call a must see. I've seen some negative reviews for this movie and I have to wonder what movie those individuals were watching. It obviously wasn't this one. The premise of the movie is one that I've not seen done in this manner previously or at least not with this level of success. All in all, this is a must see movie.
Dead Man's Luck (2006)
Overall, not a bad movie.
First and foremost, if you like the basic plot line of the movie give it a shot. I personally do not give any credit to reviews of any movie as everyone has different tastes in what they like. Secondly, pay no attention to the conspiracy theorists who claim the movies rating were inflated (so to speak). The plot line to this movie is believable and played out fairly well. The movie has some points that could have been better, but that is true of most any movie you watch. Keep in mind this was an indie film going in and with that being said, tailor what you expect to that. Overall, the movie was decently portrayed, the cast was fairly well suited to the characters, and the plot itself was not so outlandish as to be completely unbelievable (which sadly happens with big budget mainstream movies these days). Give the movie a chance and base your opinion solely on what you think of it and not what others have said. It has been my experience that if a critic (or armchair critic in this case) didn't like a movie, it was probably pretty good.
