To pillage or not to pillage?
Every hentai must answer this question, and La Blue Girl answers it. Over and over. It is the story of Miko Mido, a young woman training to be the master of a very specific type of martial arts, having to do entirely with sexual power. By controlling her own sexuality, she can channel it into actions no human can do.
Throughout the series, Miko Mido uses her power to dispense justice on demons, save her family, and protect some very special artifacts from groups of ninja out to steal the sexual power her tribe is so well-known for.
The series (and especially the first and second episodes) are entertaining, but they do require a MASSIVE suspension of disbelief. When people talk about "tentacle porn", La Blue Girl is usually at the top of the list. It is best to watch it with an open mind, and with the intent to laugh... The dubbing is hilarious, and quite well done for a hentai.
The Stepford Wives (2004)
Remake? Not too bad...
The original 1975 film was a thriller, high in suspense and dripping with the "new" Women's Liberation Movement. If you go see this "remake", expecting to get the same feeling from it, you will be sorely disappointed. This version of "The Stepford Wives" does follow the book as much as the original movie did, but greatly updated. The references to the original film are cute, tongue-in-cheek, and often unnecessary.
The film takes a more humorous approach to the story, and sticks with the jokes throughout the entire course. There are several cheap-shots at sexual humor, so I wouldn't recommend this movie for parents and their kids, unless you want to be answering a LOT of awkward questions afterward.
While the humor in the movie does keep it moving along, there are several spots that could've used being cut. They probably would've, if the film wasn't already so short. If you're looking for a politically groundbreaking film (like the first one was), don't bother with this. On the other hand, if you're looking for a sweet story that we were all raised with, put to a different tune, this is perfect.
The ending is happier, as Good triumphs over Evil in this newer update. Personally, I prefer this ending to the old one, but I never got into the whole "sad ending" thing of the 70s. If you see this movie, see it for the humour, the light-hearted messages, and the ability to watch Nicole Kidman with a brain (nice change of pace for her roles). Don't see it, expecting a psychological thriller like the original film.
