Fleabag (2016)
Not funny
I was so excited to come across this when I was browsing for a new show to watch because I missed it when it first came out. With such rave reviews and high ratings I thought I was in for a treat. Unfortunately I just found it unfunny and boring. It's pretty crude and unsophisticated which would be fine if it was also funny but it just didn't appeal to me at all. To be fair I only watched 3 episodes but I really don't want to invest any more time in this show. Such a shame. I like Phoebe Waller Bridge but this was a big disappointment. Obviously loads of people like the show so I do think it's worth trying to see if it fits with your sense of humour.
Matilda: The Musical (2022)
Awful - watch the old movie instead.
I don't generally like musicals so I should probably have skipped this. But I loved the book and the old movie and I don't mind Tim Minchin so I thought I'd give it a go.
I regretted it from the opening scene and song "my mummy says I'm a miracle". Overly theatrical in a way that made it seem ridiculous and didn't translate from a stage to a movie.
It was poorly paced with insufficient time spent establishing Matilda's home life and character. As a result they managed to make her seem spiteful and generally unlikable. The absolute low point for me was seeing Emma Thompson prance around and neigh like a horse. What an absolute waste of her talent.
If you like the book and the old movie don't watch this awful production.
Tiny Creatures (2020)
Bizarrely scripted
I didn't realise this was a staged and scripted show at first. But it didn't take long. The voiceover was really strange giving the little creatures much more complex cognitive capacity than they have in reality. It just seemed unnecessary. I'm not interested in fake stories about nature but if you're going to tell them at least make it believable. 4 stars because it entertained my 5 year old.
The Midwich Cuckoos (2022)
Creepy modern adaptation
I thought this was a great adaptation of the original novel. I'm not sure why so many reviewers appeared triggered by interracial relationships - yikes! I didn't even notice until I read the reviews. Honestly it can't be the 1950s forever. Great story with some changes making it watchable in 2022. I thought it was well acted and atmospheric.
