Frankie vs the Internet (2021)
Beat Bobby Flay for the average home cook.
Beat Bobby Flay for the average home cook. It's fun, zany and entertaining. Not much more you can ask for. It doesn't have all the dramatic filler of shows like Masterchef. Everyone is a good sport and the guest judges are having a good time.
The other great thing about the show is the recipes are viral trends (half of which I've never seen) so they are easy to make at home. The chefs however, put genius spins on otherwise seemingly simple dishes. I can't tell you how many interesting things I've tried based off this show.
Good to see Frankie from Struggle Meals getting the recognition he deserves. He's a good dude.
Murder House Flip: Jozsef Barsi House - Part 1 (2020)
Judith Barsi
So unreal seeing the house of Judith Barsi, having grown up with her movies and remembering her murder. For those that don't know, she was Ducky in "The Land Before Time" and Anne-Marie in "All Dogs Go To Heaven".
Pretty crazy that she was murdered at age 10 and then this 10 year old girl moved into this house (and room) and "talked" to the ghost of Judith Barsi's murderous father. You can tell this woman has been through a lot living here.
This makeover was pretty good.
Masters of the Universe: Revelation: The Power of Grayskull (2021)
True fans.
I'm having a difficult time connecting the dots on what people were so upset about. I grew up watching He-Man and was a pretty hardcore fan as a kid. This was such a fantastic trip down memory lane. From what people were saying leading up to me watching this, I was expecting them to do something terrible to He-Man's character. He ended up being an absolute savage!
The action, animation and voice acting is all great! I've only seen this first episode, but so far, it's freaking rad. As for the complaints about Teela being masculine, she looked completely normal, like any depiction of a female warrior. Wonder Woman, Big Barda, Xena, She-Hulk etc.
Oh, and there's a reason it's called Master(s) of The Universe...
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
8 but not because it's great
Being a massive DC fan I feel like it's necessary to state that this movie is pretty mediocre.
First off, Zack Snyder is like a B-Movie director that somehow keeps getting big Hollywood budgets. His use of slow motion, poor choreography, horrendous CGI and a constant barrage of theme music is exhausting. It's something I can't look passed.
It hurts my soul that Marvel can get the look, feel and cgi right in everything they do and DC is still living in the dark ages by comparison. DC/WB graphics team need to be fired. This was basically the quality of a video game. And with the added production time and budget we would expect something new, fresh and a massive boost in quality... didn't happen.
All that being said, I give it an 8 only because of my love for DC. There are quite a few exhilarating parts for DC fans and several Easter eggs.
The Good Shepherd (2006)
Meticulously crafted
First off, let me start by saying that I'm baffled this movie is rated a 6.7. It's definitely not for the average viewer, it is a slow intricate burn. But it's incredibly crafted. The visuals are fantastic and the dialogue is top tier. Upon a second viewing the movie really shines. I'm actually in shock that DeNiro hasn't directed more films!
Dick Tracy (1990)
"All's fair in love & business"- Benjamin Franklin
If this EXACT movie came out today, people would call it a masterpiece.
I love this movie. Visually stunning! I love the 30-40's show tunes, the zoot suits, the tommy guns, the crazy names and characters. What's not to love about this movie?! The low rating is baffling to me.
One of my favorite childhood films. The lines in this movie are gold! Al Pacino knocks it out of the park (like always), Madonna actually has acting chops. The stars were aligned when this movie came together and a timeless masterpiece was created.
If you haven't seen it, just watch it. I had shown my roommate this movie for the first time and he was blown away.
Dick Tracy is criminally underrated.
The Grey (2011)
The Primal Instincts of Man .
This movie moved me. I've never understood the negative reviews. I think it's because the trailers portrayed it as an action movie of man vs wolf. No thank you...
This is a story of survival. Surviving is a basic human instinct, even if you believe your life has no value. The character growth and conversations really made this movie. There are some action parts to grab the cheap thrills of a common movie goer. But if you're looking for something of far more value, you can definitely find it in this movie. Man vs nature, God and a character study on men at their most vulnerable.
I sat in the theatre in the dark soaking everything in after the credits stopped until I was asked to leave by the theatre staff.
The Secret of NIMH (1982)
The Greatest Animated Movie of All Time.
This is a bold statement I know... there are countless things that make this movie unique and stand above the rest.
I've loved this movie since early childhood in the 80's and currently, and it continues to stay relevant. One of the beautiful things is that as a child you don't catch everything going on, it's just visually stunning with fun characters. As you get older it seems to age with you. Its no longer childish and the story and characters become very real.
Mrs. Brisby is completely unique in the animated world. Not only is there a massive void of motherly figures in cartoons across the board, there especially isn't one that is as empowering and maternal as Her. She is a real mother struggling to take care of her kids after suffering the loss of her husband.
Every character and theme in this movie has real depth, that partnered with an incredible soundtrack and an absolute visual masterpiece!!! You will not find a greater animated movie in my opinion. This was a time when one man (Don Bluth) almost single handedly took out Disney.
Insomnia (2002)
Stunning
There's a lot to be said about an actor that can start a movie as a character and by the end of the film he's playing someone entirely different and the audience never caught the subtle changes. Al Pacino nailed this role.
Easily some of Robin Williams best acting as well. That coupled with Christopher Nolan's imagery and soundtrack. I rewatched this move about six time in two weeks. One of Nolan's hidden gems, that is arguably one of his greatest films.
A Walk Among the Tombstones (2014)
Detective Crime Drama
Don't come into this movie expecting a typical action movie. This is a slow burning crime drama that revolves around a good script and great acting. This was my first taste of David Harbour and I could tell he had a future in Hollywood.
I'm the minority, but I enjoyed this more than Taken.
Gold (2016)
What if I told you there's no Gold...
Hear me out. I know this I loosely based on a true story, but...
I've been looking at other reviews to see if anyone caught the subtle hints in the film that implied the whole thing was just a giant story told by a washed up has been in a bar. All of his bar mates just go along with his crazy tales of being in the jungles of Indonesia with some over the top Indiana Jones character looking for gold. If you rewatch it with this in mind, you will notice more and more things that point to the fact that none of it is real... and if the director purposefully filmed it that way, then this film is brilliant! If I'm way off base, then at least it was entertaining and deserving of an 8/10.
Demolition (2015)
Demolished.
"Repairing the human heart is like repairing an automobile. You have to take everything apart, just examine everything, and then you can put it all back together."
This movie did a great job of showing how different people handle loss. It doesn't always have to make sense.
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Better than expected...
I actively avoided this. After The Last Jedi I couldn't handle the heartache. It's been almost a year and finally gave it shot (because other avid SW fans said it wasn't as bad as TLJ) Agreed.
I will say visually I loved it. The spirit of Han wasn't fully captured and there were definitely some cheesy parts, but it wasn't a "bad" movie. It felt closer to Rogue One than The Last Jedi.
Adam Sandler: 100% Fresh (2018)
Classic Sandler
I like Adam Sandler in the way you like your inappropriate obnoxious uncle... he's stupid and makes cheesy jokes, but you can't help but to laugh. There's something really charming and genuine about Sandler that keeps you coming back for more.
I will say this was better than I was expecting, and the tribute to Chris Farley definitely got me choked up.
