Alien: Covenant (2017)
Too negative
I didn't like this movie because it's too negative.
I loved Alien 2 back in the 80s, because I loved getting scared. You gotta give it to the covenant team: they made the aliens more dangerous, vicious, gory and even scarier than the old ones. They could have easily ruined it but they made it good. The director still has it.
So what's my problem with it? As a kid I could sometimes laugh when people died in the most gruesome manner possible, it was just fun. But now in my thirties I don't like seeing a 20 year old girl getting disfigured and eaten alive, with all the skillful realism that comes with it.
Alien 2 back then was pretty negative in terms of human nature and what happened on the screen, but Covenant is worse, and I think it crossed the line and became a horror movie like Silent Hill rather than a scary action thriller. It's too graphic and sinister. If I want to see that kind of stuff I can just go on YouTube and type "Lions eat buffalo baby alive".
Quantum of Solace (2008)
Just the usual action movie
First off, let me just say I really like Daniel Craig, I think he's the best James Bond lately. But unfortunately, they don't use him correctly. The movie Quantum Solace doesn't deliver : it's just another action movie, not a James Bond movie. The plot is very weak and there's very little character development.
At least in Royale, James Bond was a little more complex. They tried to make him tormented and imperfect. In Quantum Solace, they continued on that thread, but pushed it too far and made it ridiculous. James Bond is now more like the cop from the 80's who kicks everyone ass and runs away from his barking boss. The plot goes along this line, too. Why didn't they pick Sylvester Stalone while we're at it? If you're expecting explosions, car chases, mindless fighting and pursuits, you won't be disappointed, because that's all there is to this movie.
Surviving My Mother (2007)
Good actors, decent directing, confused script
You will have mixed feelings about this movie. However, the remaining feeling for me is frustration : the cast and crew obviously has a lot of talent, but it wasn't used to its full potential.
This movie started pretty well, and the intrigue of Caroline Dhavernas character grew on me. It got me interested towards the end. Then, they ruined it. Boring, both the content and the way they revealed it.
The rest of the movie goes into too many directions. They tried to fit too many themes in one movie. While the other characters held their part well, they should have focused more on the mother and the daughter instead of wasting time on many scenes that didn't really add to the main plot.
The writer was obviously confused : he didn't know what ending to choose. He didn't have a clear idea from the start and it showed. Or maybe something bad happened during the shooting that prevented the original idea to be carried on the screen, but alas, we will never know.
Fainaru fantajî sebun adobento chirudoren (2005)
Stunning visuals ; bad movie.
I wasn't expecting anything out of this film, but even so, I'm still disappointed. This movie is nothing more than a slideshow of the best CG work to date (amazing) paired with an excuse for a plot.
If you thought that FF: Spirits within had good graphics, Advent Children will impress you even more. Instead of aiming for realism, they spent more time on making the movie look good, and it shows. The visuals are awesome, the animation is almost perfect. But these qualities can't save the movie.
Let me sum the plot up : Sephiroth comes back to fight Cloud. The rest of the plot is an excuse for Sephiroth. It's meaningless. The 3 villains are totally uninspired, they come out of nowhere, and their motivations are plain dumb (they're just like the clones who want the Reunion). The other characters play only a small part in the movie, and that's fine, although I thought that Tifa could have done more. Cloud's torments are boring : "I can't save anyone, *sniff*". It makes me wonder if the scripters of this film played FF7, because that issue with Cloud was solved in that game. Instead of wasting 2/3 of the movie trying to justify bringing back Sephiroth, they should have brought him back at the beginning of the movie, so they would have spent time on Sephiroth instead. The 3 villains were boring and meaningless. The Turks and Rufus... what a joke.
This feels like a remake more than a sequel. They tried too hard to please fans as much as possible by putting every reference they could to FF7. Why not bring back Aeris while we're there? Oh wait...
