The History Boys (2006)
Don't believe the hype
I didn't really care for this film. As it is taken directly from a play the whole affair is far too theatrical for a movie. On stage you can get away with a lack of realism as you watch it knowing its a play and can excuse eccentricities. On film however this just doesn't work. I found the characters mainly fairly dislike-able, the dialogue and the way the boys behaved in the school highly unrealistic. For the first 20 minutes or so I actually thought I would like the film, however, as the film went on I found myself struggling to keep interest, and found it all fairly predictable. There's some good performances in there, (Richard Griffiths is always good), and a few funny moments, but in the end I just didn't care about any of them.
The Wild (2006)
Better Than Expected
I'd been reading A LOT of negative press about this movie here on the IMDb for a while now so was very curious to see what it was like. I didn't like Madagascar at all, so wasn't sure what I would make of this. Thankfully I found it nothing like Madagascar other than the basic premise. The voice casting was good, (particularly Eddie Izzard) and the animation was simply gorgeous and amongst the best I've seen. Whilst this is not a great movie, it is by no means a bad one. It's perfectly watchable. Kids should enjoy and adults on the whole shouldn't be bored by it. Don't be put off by all the hatred towards this, give it a go and you might be pleasantly surprised.
Lady in the Water (2006)
Water Torture
Let me start off by saying I love fantasy films and was more than prepared to accept the world created in this movie. I have a very vivid imagination and am not at all cynical towards films of this ilk. For those wondering I felt it necessary to say that as those who defend this film always seem to accuse those who disliked it of lacking those sensibilities. I hated this film. It was boring, pretentious, self glorifying rubbish. The dialogue was poor and the pacing dreadful. I did like the scrunts (wolf like creatures) I only wish that they had been those we do not speak of in The Village, then that movie might not have sucked quite as much as it did. If its a good fun fantasy flick you're after go and see the superior in every way Monster House.
Fat Slags (2004)
Worst Film Ever Made
That sounds like a pretty outrageous claim, but see the movie and you will know where I'm coming from (oo-err! bit of innuendo!) Really though, this is an abomination of a film, dreadful in every possible aspect. As a life long Viz reader I know what a Fat slags movie should be like, and this just ain't it. Similarities between the comic book characters and on screen counterparts was minimal: they're fat, oh yeah, and, well, that's it really. They should be constantly looking for sex, getting drunk and generally being loud and offensive: doesn't sound like much of a plot, but come, the film only lasts 75 or so minutes, (which really drags). The two actresses were also very poor, just plain annoying. And how could they miss out the trademark laugh? NA AA AA AA AA AA AA AA AA: no such laughs in this movie. Save time and read the comic instead.
The Gingerdead Man (2005)
Ouch This is Awful!
I saw this movie advertised in Fangoria, and immediately found the concept of Gary Busey as a killer gingerbread man hilarious. Sure I knew this would be bad, but I'd expected it to be bad in a good kind of way. Nope, afraid not! This movie is dreadful in every possible way. The action itself clocks in at only an hour, and that includes an overly lengthy opening credits sequence, the end credits somehow bumping it to 71 mins??? It seems silly to criticise a movie like this, but it really could have made a decent "bad movie". Why not more scenes of the Gingerdead Man? Why not more cringeworthy lines for him to deliver? Why not even a remotely interesting death scene? Possible Spoiler: There is one sequence in this movie which highlights just how funny the movie could have been: its only a 20 second sequence in which the GD Man dishes out verbal abuse to a rat. Truly hilarious (in a bad movie way) and the reason I've given this film a rating of two.
