Wind River (2017)
Nothing to add
This movie starts off as a cliché thriller murder mystery, and stays kinda stuck with that vibe troughout the entire film. When you eventually find out what happened - no one is truly surprised, which is not a good thing for a movie like thism i rate it 2 stars, as the final scène is touching.
Love and Monsters (2020)
Dont forget about the dog
Since it has not been mentioned: an apocalypthic movie about a ordinary guy surviving on his own and meeting a dog on the way .... is it an original plot? Mhm not really. Is it something we have not seen before? Mhn not really. But it is an funny movie about survival wilst meeting a dog, what else do you need?
The Night Of (2016)
How a Big Budget Copy is ... still very much feeling like a copy
When in 2009 I watched BBC's Criminal Justice, I sincerely enjoyed it. The atmosphere was just right, the actors were great (leading role played by then unknown actor for me Ben Winshaw, most famous for being the new Q in James Bond's Skyfall and Spectre) and there was enough tension to keep going.
This story, just a few years later is based on Criminal Justice, and feels much like a literal copy, only stretched out longer to enable HBO to fill more airtime. While watching the pilot episode, we often had to stop in frustration as plot lines were completely similar, up to the point where the same dialogue was used.
Still a great story of itself, and I advice anyone who hasn't seen the original to see it, but for an European audience it is just too quick and too much of the same thing to really be enjoyable.
Blå ögon (2014)
Blue eyes; "Nordic Noir" at its best
The Swedish Show Blue Eyes is an outstanding detective in a long line of successful Scandanavian thrillers, and has the same supreme mix between crime and politics as success-story "the Killing".
Blue eyes, or Blå ögon follows Elin Hammer, the head of Staff at the ministry of Justice, who starts researching the disappearance of her predecessor Sarah. As a local politician is murdered, and Sarah remains no where to be found, the tension within the Swedish society increases after multiple attacks by terroristic group Veritas.
Right from the start the show is clouded in a big political cover-up by which puzzles about the nature of it are slowly revealed to the audience. With multiple people being killed for the identity of the main secret, Blue Eyes is extremely exciting to watch from beginning to end.
In addition, the amount of well-build characters within this over- arching story line is admirable. Even though the shows lacks some credibility here and there, the creators were able to create both sympathy and disgust for the people involved. The many inter- connected story-lines blend together to form a narrative which is both a very good "whodunnit", and a political drama which is scarily close to post-Paris reality.
The only shame here is that there were only 10 episodes, which made the ending seem rather rushed.
Overall, it must be said that with Blue Eyes, Scandanivia has found itself a new hit worthy of the same success as "the Killing".
The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
Never have I seen a movie with so many big names performing so badly
In theory the Wolf of Wall Street seems to have it all. High scoring actors like Leonardo Di Caprio, Jonah Hill and Margot Robbie, and well- known director Martin Scorsese.
However, non of them helped the movie to become the great piece of art it is proclaimed to be. So where did it go wrong?
it starts already with the first scene in which a lion walks around the office for no reason at all. Right from the beginning I was annoyed by the lack of a comprehensive and telling storyline. Rahter than focusing on an aspect of Jordan Belfart's life Martin Scorsese choose for the approach of trying to fit in as much as possible.
The result: an nearly 3 hours during movie containing sex scenes and even more sex scenes, without any addition to the story-line, since we get the fact that he is rich, uses drugs and has sex after 10 minutes already. This does not have to be enhanced and repeated over and over again.
To be honest, I have never seen an movie which is nominated for an Oscar being so absulotly terrible. Really, why is this nominated for even a single Oscar? I don't get it.
Perhaps it is because the Oscars are American, and if there is one thing they like most it is the " American dream": something which this movie is all about. However even that is not explained thoroughly: when Leonardo Di Caprio starts explaining, he cuts himself of and says all you need to know is that it was illegal.
Perhaps it was because some people find it absolutely funny, and it was funny. For the first 10 minutes only.
As a final comment I want to say that I was shocked at the way the movie dealt with homosexuality,(which was not positive i can tell you that) and the last scene was perhaps most hateful of all: as Jordan Belfart asks white members of the audience to sell them his pen (which I didn't get at all: why would people want advice from a criminal?) he asks several people, than skips the black member of the audience, and asks another white guy, why? Do you intend to be racist, or just a very bad mistake?
In conclusion: I advice you not to see this movie, since it is a complete waist of your time.
Chasing Mavericks (2012)
Chasing Mavericks: the untold story of Jay Moriarty creates an opportunity to create the best movie of 2012.
Chasing Mavericks is the story of 15 year old Jay Moriarty who wants to be trained to surf the Mavericks break, nearby his house. in order to do so he gets help from the legendary neighbour Frosty Hesson (played by the ever so genius Gerard Butler.)
Because of this, people might see it as a typical surf movie, and as such it has received some bad reviewing in the past. However I don't agree with it at all, and blame it on the only explanation possible: some critics might be jealous at Jay, and his incredible lifestyle. At just 16 years old he achieves his primary goal in life: surfing the Mavericks wave to be able to feel alive.
In fact it is not at all about the actual surfing. Yes, content wise it is. But looking at it from only that perspective is doing this great movie much to short, since this movie is about achieving a main goal in life. Achieving something you want more than anything else in the world. It's about love, friendship, parenthood, died, everlasting glory and fame, and more. Like I said, stating that this movie is just about surfing is not true, although i due see how it might inspire some people to start surfing as well. And to be honest, you can see that young Jay knows what he is doing, and that shows on screen. Nevermind the beautiful scenery of California coastlines.
Furthermore is this movie based on true life, which is always a plus for me, and this movie provides the perfect mix between dramatic tension, humour and emotion. It is a story which inspires others, and this goes most certainly for this movie as well. I guess that for many people viewing this movie the words: LIFE LIKE JAY will stay in their heads a long time.
Lastly i want to give create for the great editing of the movie, and the great use of music. this movie did not only provide me with a great time at looking at it, but also with several new great bands which i never had heard of before. For example: Blue light, and FADE INTO YOU of Mazzy Star are 2 great songs which I have learned about.
To finish off i want to say that this is one of the greatest movies of 2012 and that i'm not a surfer and that I didn't know Mazzy Star before this movie.
life like jay!
Greetings from Glenn
