Flightplan (2005)
What a let down!
What the heck went on around the writers table when they were developing ideas for this film - the overall idea was interesting and the first half of the film had a great feel and lulled you into what promised to be a classic film; suspenseful with a real "jagged Edge" feel to it. What happened at that table - did they bring in a monkey or did an film executive take over and lead the writers in the ludicrous direction the plot took! As the film developed you start to believe that Jodie really is going mad with grief and actually her daughter had died with her husband - sureley this would have been a better way to take the film. Perhaps even have her uncover a hijack plot through her madness. Instead we end up with a poor Arnie film with lots of action and no substance. Nothing that happens is even remotely conceivable and the shot of Jodie emerging through a smoke cloud carrying her unconscious daughter after having blown up the plane was bizarre and puerile - and the dialogue that went with it you would expect from an episode of Batman. I felt cheated with this film - it could and should have been so much better. This is the kind of film that SHOULD be remade - but definitely re-written!
Rock Star (2001)
Clichéd but highly watchable
Look, if you come across a rock movie and particularly a fictional rock movie you really do know what to expect and on that level this film does not disappoint. Without seeing it I could have approximately predicted the storyline and no doubt you could too. The rock stars life style unpredictably stylised, the love interest threaded through the heart of the film, the body surfing, the rock star language - its all there in bucket loads. Having said all that, this is a highly watchable film in no small amount due to the performances of Jennifer Anniston and Mark Wahlberg. Both these actors have a screen presence that holds your gaze. Don't expect too much from this film and you'll enjoy the ride - give it a go.
