Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017)
Subverted Expectations in Every Way
As other people have said, I was not expecting that I would like this, but was pleasantly surprised! The avatars playing against the real-life personas was much funnier than I had thought it would be. If you want a genuine laugh and a subversion of tropes, this movie is for you! It also pays some respect to the original, and doesn't destroy any of what that one set out to do.
The ending that came for the love interests was one of my favourite things because it really went against what most movies do. I'll explain further down (here is where the spoiler comes into play):
The two outcasts had crushes on each other, rather than one or the other pining after the popular choices like most outcasts in movies do. Also, the popular, self-obsessed girl had a crush, but it didn't even lead to a romance, it just led to her development as a character - becoming more aware of the feelings of others, and helping them selflessly.
I really didn't expect that refreshing change from this movie, but that's what it gave us, and I am happy I gave it a chance!
The Proposal (2018)
Not even enjoyable as a "hate watch"
As the title says, I attempted to watch the premiere to see if maybe I could poke fun and whatnot, but you just can't.
As if The Bachelor wasn't bad enough. Instead of months to get to know someone, the contestant gets an hour. Real solid foundation for a relationship. The Miss America pageant finally got rid of the swimsuit portion of the contest, and this show just scooped it back up off the floor. And why does the contestant get to see all the people vying for them, but the people putting themselves out there don't get to see them? It's impossible to get emotionally invested in this. It makes marriage look frivolous and stupid. I would be disappointed if this got picked up for another season, or even if it got to finish airing this one.
Michael: Every Day (2011)
A Hidden Canadian Gem
I've read at least one review that has said this show makes fun of mental illness, anxiety, phobias, etc. I disagree wholeheartedly. With the scenes that immerse you into the panicked situation that Michael is in, like the elevator for instance, you can really get a sense of what this is like for people who live with it everyday. It does make jokes, but they need light-hearted breaks from the tension. You can always find humour, even in some darker things, and I respect the show for its take.
My favourite aspect of the show is the narration, which is insightful and painfully true, and is never stated eloquently. Dr. Storper speaks it as a train of thought, with all pauses, corrections, and improper wording included. As a writer who often tries to sit and make sense of my thoughts, I can appreciate its realism. I also love the endings of each episode, specifically their subtlety.
I love finding Canadian shows, and this one certainly is a hidden gem! I definitely recommend!
Back to the Future (1985)
Very cool and exciting
I'm a fan of all the Back to the Future movies. I love them because they are very cool and exciting, and they incorporate the styles of plots that I love most, comedy, action, adventure, and even a little romance.
Anyone who watches this movie will not be disappointed, the actors are really awesome, and the plot idea is great. This movie is personally my favourite of the three. Marty (played by Michael J. Fox) is sent back in time to 1955 from a time machine created by scientist Doctor Brown,(played by Christopher Lloyd)where he interferes with the past, and has to make sure his teenage parents end up together.
How I Met Your Mother (2005)
A Heartfelt Love Story
This show has a great plot, it's a creative idea that I think is new and fresh. I haven't seen it before. It's the journey of a man meeting the love of his life, with the help of his friends. He's telling his kids how he met her. The acting is fairly believable, especially that of Ted. His character is sweet and compassionate, a man determined and hopeful of finding his soul-mate. The other characters add the comedy, and the drama. Great plot, great characters and actors.
The show can be inappropriate at times, but let's be honest, what GOOD shows and movies don't have a few inappropriate moments? The only thing I don't like, is that in the show's most recent season, season 8, the inappropriate moments have piled up. In my opinion, after the first two episodes from season 8, it went downhill. It just lost its heartfelt meaning and became all about dirty jokes. But I didn't lose hope, and I kept watching. Sure enough, there were some heartfelt episodes, especially at the end. Also, Barney has gradually become more mature, and less dirty, which I liked.
I know that a lot of the fans like the dirty jokes and inappropriate moments, but I think they forget that young teenagers watch this too. Some of them watch it for the cute romance story, I know that's what I watch it for. I'm hoping season 9 won't disappoint, but I'm not very confident about it.
One thing I do know is that when we finally see Ted meet his wife, it will be an amazing moment. It may not meet everyone's expectations, but it will still be memorable.
If you start to lose hope in the series, I urge you to not give up on it!
