I've seen many abstracts about how much Shayamalan is lost or losing his "skills" as an director, I also saw all his movies, but if you ask me the prejudice towards a different sort of cinematic style, or maybe an specific individual is what makes his movies, specially this movie, not for you.
I am from Brazil and it's a funny thing that when someone talked about Shayamalan here, specially in the past, everyone would have only good things to say about him, I guess the internet was better used back then to download pirated media because we didn't had the access as we have today to movies or games, but everybody I knew loved his work.
To my surprise, some years later, I realized that it wasn't like that in the US, and every time he releases a movie there was always commentaries like, "Shayamalan is stagnated", "He is a director of one good movie", "His movies always sucked", or the best " he is just a bad Hitchcock immitator', and the thing is, I think that most of you people where induced by the critics to believe this stuff, because always Shayamalan hit back on critics wich made him not very popular ammong them and off course it is what made the critics against him worse and worse, so, what I am saying is, you are probably prejudicial towards him, maybe because of his color, maybe because of his demeaner, maybe because someone else told you to, to me it makes no sense that when he does a great movie people will simply give terrible evaluations that often make so little sense that I wonder what movie this people watched.
If you look into the people who evaluated his movies you will see that when it's negative or mediocre, people speak about qualities that make no sense like one that was the "best" and I kept on my mind, "The movie feels simultaneously too long, too slow and to short, too quick", I mean, if that is a criticism that makes sense I am probably closer to the Joker as I wanted to be.
Well in the end this movie is an empathic exercise, it's a scary and horrible situation that Shayamalan wants you to experience and to put yourself on the place of these characters, it goes to some unique lenghts to do that and they made me very unconfortable at the same time that made me think about life.
The acting was great, the dialogues, different from Old, made sense to a impossible sittuation that these people where on, If you read a critique about how the characters talk nonsense, well ignore it, probably they don't understand human behavior that well.
The direction is superb, as usually is in Shayamalan movies.
To end this, I think this movie is not for you, but if you see through the superficial criticism(or maybe you shouldn't even read criticism for your own good) and you love a drama that makes you think about life at it's end(dubious commentary but totaly pertinent), this movie is for you.
