The Last Time You Had Fun (2014)
Exactly what you want
Smart dialogue delivered with flawless acting. Given the premise, I fully expected to cringe my way through this movie.
Didn't happen once.
It felt like watching a really good indie film from the '90s. If you're a fan of HBO's Togetherness, chances are this will be right up your street. Only expect to have way more fun, and find yourself actually wanting to spend time with these characters. This movie may not change your life but if you're in your thirties or forties it will deliver everything you're hoping for: fully-realized characters you feel like you already know having a lived experience you relate to at an uncanny depth. You may know where the journey is taking these four individuals, but less because of the predictability and more because it's where you want to go. Let yourself go there.
Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter (2014)
insulting
This movie is really great for people who like to see mental illness sensationalized.
***SPOILER ALERT***
Unless I'm completely missing some other possible explanation, I see no other story arc at play here than watching the pained struggles of someone suffering a psychotic break. Never mind that it's just poor storytelling to deliver on building suspense with, "none of this was consequential, the character was just nuts." That aside, I held out hope until the end that they would give a more honest and sympathetic conclusion to Kumiko's plight, but instead they glorified what she was going through without ever acknowledging what must have really happened to her.
