Nefarious (2023)
Buckle up, Buttercup
What a ride this movie is. For a movie that is primarily a conversation between two actors, it's riveting. A powerfully told story, well edited, well written. Sean Patrick Flanery is outstanding. What an actor, why has he not won on Oscar? Maybe he soon will. I had almost finished the book the film is based on, so I thought I knew what to expect, but the film blew me away. I hope Nefarious gains traction with audiences, because it is so deeply thought-provoking, everyone should see it. Check your presuppositions at the door, prepare to be grabbed by your shirt collar and not let loose till the very end. Glenn Beck, you rascal, great cameo. Kudos Steve Deace on the novel and film! Go see it!
Risen (2016)
Beautiful film
I love how this story is told from the viewpoint of a Roman Tribune. Joseph Fiennes played his part perfectly, I really believed him as the Roman soldier. A man of action, used to command, he dealt with facts and realities that a neophyte soldier, like his new aide, Lucius, could only imagine. Some reviews have complained of Fiennes' stoic portrayal. I say he played it exactly as such a man as Clavius would actually be.
As Clavius begins to encounter the truth of who Yeshua is, he is torn and visibly shaken as he begins to believe. He is shocked at himself, and all of this is portrayed through Fiennes' subtle facial expressions, and his eyes. His eyes were captivating.
On a "religious" note, I thought the portrayal of the 12 disciples was perfect. They were regular men, called by a Messiah, to do supernatural things. If God can use them, and He did!, he can certainly use anyone to accomplish great things for faith.
Rake (2014)
Grows on you
I love this show .. it grows on you ..... Keegan Deane is a complicated guy with a lot of loose ended relationships ... it seems. I'm still catching on to the characters and what's happening. Greg Kinnear is utterly charming, annoying, but charming. That's not easy to portray. The strong women around him make his failings more obvious. The women actually steal the show. The prosecutor on last night's show was a riot. Portrayed by Bess Armstrong. I thought her lines were some of the best given to a female attorney in a show ever.
I take issue with one reviewer's complaint about Greta Van Susteren "product placement." The reviewer says Greta's show is about made-up scandals because people don't like the president being black. Wake up. He's gotten elected twice. "The people" have no problem with him being black. FoxNews, conservatives, et al, don't like his POLICIES. So drop the "black problem." We're so far beyond that in 2014, just drop it already. It's the lamest argument ever. Further, Keegan is exactly the kind of guy who would want to be a pundit on a show like Greta's, that's the point, and that's why it's funny.
